Lack of Transparency, Escalating Fees, and Limited Attorney Involvement…read more I retained Nancy Uko at ReGain Law during a high-conflict family law case involving enforcement of court-ordered support and discovery disputes. At the beginning, I was led to believe that the case would likely cost around $5,000. However, the total fees ultimately reached approximately $7,700, and I continued receiving invoices without clear explanation of how the work was being prioritized or strategized. Most communication was handled by associates rather than Ms. Uko herself. I only met with Ms. Uko twice -- once before signing the agreement and once at court. The majority of emails, calls, and drafting were done by other staff members. After the first hearing, despite informing the firm that I had no income and that court-ordered payments were not being made to me, no urgent enforcement hearing was filed at that time. This left me in significant financial hardship. When I later began formally requesting clarification about billing entries and allocation of hours (I was informed that approximately 53 hours had been spent on my case), the firm provided additional documentation and adjustments. However, I did not feel that my concerns about billing transparency were meaningfully addressed. Ultimately, the firm withdrew from my case shortly after I began asking detailed questions regarding billing and scope of work. As a client already under severe financial pressure, this was extremely difficult. This was one of the most stressful periods of my life. I expected clearer strategic direction, stronger proactive enforcement efforts, and more transparency regarding fees and attorney involvement. Since she claims to be a "narcissist slayer" we thought this would be the perfect attorney to retain for my daughter's divorce. Unfortunately, I think Ms. Uko might be spread too thin and is not able to spend the time that is necessary to communicate and strategize with her clients. We spent over $15,000 in legal fees in over approximately five months, ultimately only reaching temporary orders, which were not very favorable for my daughter. The overall experience was disappointing due to ongoing communication issues and what we felt was a lack of responsiveness and strategic guidance throughout the process. Regain Law uses a portal for all communication and my daughter would submit a series of questions and often very traumatic screenshots of messages from her husband and no one would respond. She would then call the office asking for someone to call her or to make sure that Nancy has received all her messages. When we would finally receive a response in the portal, it was more often than not, just another request for payment. Most disappointing was that after we questioned the communication and direction of the case, instead of receiving collaborative guidance, we received a highly defensive email response to our concerns at 3:00 in the morning that lacked professionalism or empathy for the stress our family was under. In the email, Ms. Uko said that she would have her office recommend someone else that might be better suited. We were absolutely shocked! We were simply looking for some clarification as the temporary orders hearing was just days away. In fact, after reading the email, my daughter said it brought back PTSD and it was similar in tone to something her narcissistic husband would write. Shortly thereafter, at the temporary hearing, my daughter was told, "I'm not going to put up with this," and Ms. Uko moved to withdraw from representation two weeks later. We were then charged an additional $349 for Regain Law to file a motion with the court and close out my daughter's file. We were billed on 5/15/26 for drafting the closing letter and were told that the balance of our trust account would then be mailed out once this was complete. As of today, 6/4/26, we still have not received the closing letter or the trust balance. For a client who has invested substantial money and trust during one of the most difficult periods of their life, this experience was extremely discouraging. I understand that divorce litigation is difficult and outcomes are never guaranteed. However, clients deserve clear communication, professionalism, and a collaborative attorney-client relationship -- especially when significant legal fees are involved.
