Debenhams is one of your typical lower-end department stores, which certainly isn't as high-end as Selfridges, Harrods and House of Fraser for example, but still slightly nicer and more higher-end than TKmaxx, as I'm aware other than Harrods they all have stores in Birmingham city center. Debenhams are still a large store with 178 stores in The UK, Ireland and Denmark and were founded back in 1778. This branch of Debenhams is located in the Bullring mall, with enterences from both street and mall level, it is a decent sized store too. The lifts here were pretty slow, and they didn't show much signal of it working, and although it was, I didn't know it was in use, so I nearly just walked away, which was disappointing It is quite a large store with a Brow Bar, Salon and Cafe and quite a few floors as well. I didn't have any close encounters with staff to comment on, they seemed okay, just average. The signposts for what is on which floor in the store could be better advertised, this store is okay but it is nothing more than that, the building its-self isn't as nice as other department stores mentioned, and in a way it has a less high-end feel, which makes it a little less special in a way, especially to tourists and potential shoppers. read more

Debenhams used to be one of my favourite stores as it houses everything but lately I haven't really our purchased many things as often as I used to. Last month I came in as I had a 5% off voucher on multiple purchases so I bought underwear on one floor, then on another day some clothes for a wedding. When I got home I inspected the receipt and worked out though it said 5% off, nothing was actually deducted! I took one dress back as I didn't wear it for a wedding and mentioned there was nothing deducted! She said it's not on all concessions ... Something the other two cashiers didn't say when scanning the clothes! I've given them four stars as I do go to the beauty department to buy skin and hair care. I do ask for samples and majority will give them .., more so with a purchase! I like to walk away with something extra!! Lol They have a beauty points card which is useful and worth collecting points. You get money off when you earn enough. read more

I met my sister yesterday at the newly remodelled restaurant within Debenhams, Birmingham. The restaurant, previously situated on the ground floor, is now located on the fourth floor. Other than one other table the place was deserted. I ordered a Mocha but when I tasted it I was sure that it was actually a very watery Hot Chocolate - no coffee evident. I returned the drink and the member of staff was happy to make me another. Unfortunately the second drink was almost as bad. My sister ordered a caramel Latte and she also had to leave most of hers claiming that it was un-drinkable. The staff at the venue were very friendly and accommodating, especially as my toddler insisted on running around and causing havoc. On a positive note the new space is very open and airy. There are great views from the windows covering one side of the restaurant and we spent a good amount of time watching the cars and people go by. However, despite the nice decor and friendly staff I feel that I am unable to give this venue more than two stars simply because of the quality of their product. If they could get this right then I might be tempted to review my review. read more

Never thought that Debenhams ever had the wow factor. The Birmingham branch in the Bullring is split over a few floors of bags, shoes, accessories, mens and womenswear, perfumes, make-up and homewares. The womenswear has small concessions, consisting of Warehouse, Jane Norman, among others and you are bound to be able to find something nice in here. Without the wow factor I find clothes a little bit dull and expensive, but maybe this is just my taste. The homeware is great, lots of delicate and decorate items, including glassware and ceramics. The best thing about this Debenhams store is the entance to newstreet which is on the womenswear floor and means you don't have to walk back out in the rain to get the train home. read more

I wouldn't recommend this store for a job and even has a customer. I tried a program which gave me 8 weeks of work experience but I could only manage 3 weeks because of the staff. The staff is so degrading to new staff and I had to get on my hands and knees and wipe the counters dust off and I was a SALES ASSISTANT!!! I was cleaning at least more than few weeks worth of dust!! The cleaners on my floor (which was shoes and accessories) all they did was try on shoes and leave them in the middle of the store! Also the shoes was mostly of poor quality I was shocked to find shoes been sold for £50 had looked like they was worn out!! And they say "what is out is the sizes" trust me I would go to the shoes where you would have to get from the back. Also I had a problem where I was standing in a place for a long time and I mean it was long! I was dehydrated and hungry near to fainting before I was allowed to go for my break! Also they are hypocrites who work there! I knew a woman who was being sexually harassed by security there and he did get sacked but when she left with me she told me they insulted her because she got him sacked which I was surprised since he was making inappropriate advances where she told him she wasn't interested. When we met him in the day where they was introducing us he kept winking at her and I felt uncomfortable with him let alone her!! If you want to work here please know that they don't care about you and when I was sick they told me "I wasn't used to working so I have to put up with it" that is so rude!! I would also not recommend the area I worked at has a customer cause it is not really a clean place and the staff are rude and more worried about their pay check! read more

I hate shopping (just to get that out of the way). I hate looking around racks and racks of clothes for something that fits, I hate pawing through things I don't like just to find something suitable and I really hate being in big busy department stores surrounded by people with more money than sense debating whether to purchase the £200 pair of shoes or the £200 handbag *shudder*. However, I don't mind the occasional trip to Debenhams. Spread over 4 floors, this behemoth of a department store takes up a whole corner of the Bullring Centre. 1st floor houses the Kitchenware, homewares, travel money and toys. It's easy to be seduced by the kitchen porn (amazingly designed glasses, ceramics and gadgets), but the most useful sections are definitely the luggage and the toys (especially when there is a sale on). I bought a really great "carry on" suitcase (perfect for short trips) for a good 80% off the RRP here - always worth a look if you're in the market for new luggage. The ladieswear, kids clothing and menswear is spread over the rest of the floors (along with cosmetics, jewelry, shoes and accessories). Again, in the sale there are huge discounts to be had on clothing and perfume; making it worth a trip after Christmas (even if you may have to elbow your way through the hoards). Although I'm not really one for designer brands (sitting here in exclusively Tesco and Primark), I do like the Henry Holland section on the 3rd floor. I don't mind the Red Herring and Oasis clothing either (I tend to avoid the gaudy Julian Macdonald), but the HH range always seems to have funky prints and garments in a really nice fit. Whether your budget is big or small, there should be something in your price range at Debenhams. It's worth pointing out that they're travel money desk offers one of the best rates for Euro's in the City too (with a downloadable voucher), so always check out the rates online before you buy. read more

A great department store that houses most items under one roof. Whether it be a wedding outfit or toaster you require a variety of departments are here. There is also a number of clothing concessions for men and women such as Principles, Oasis, Levi's and Coast. I find the department store to be much quieter after 5pm at weekends, which allows you have a leisurely look on the different levels browsing with ease. There is a café that serves breakfasts, salads and cakes as well as a child friendly menu. The toilet facilities can be found on this level too. There are a number of cosmetic make-up counters and you can even have your eyebrows groomed to perfection here if you so wish! The store is open until 8pm every day apart from Sundays when it stays open until 5pm. Oh and there is free Wi-Fi here too! read more

I adore Debenhams, I could get lost for hours in the shoes, dresses and perfume. I recently got married and my husband and I decided to use the wedding service to set up our gift list. It was a disaster from start to finish. For starters, the website doesn't tell you little things like when everything will be delivered, we only found out when we went to the store's wedding section and asked. We were meant to receive a £50 gift card, which again we had to go in store and ask about. Despite listing items as in stock, when things were ordered they would email us and tell us that things were cancelled/unavailable. In fairness, the staff at the wedding section in store were helpful and friendly but the awful website and communication ruined it. The other thing that really annoyed me, was that it was assumed that I was taking my husbands name. Even after speaking to them, I was repeatedly called Mrs Brown (we double barreled our names) which I found irritating. If I could do it again, I would have just used Amazon for the gift list. I've given the review 4 stars because wedding list problems aside, I do really love Debenhams. read more

Debenhams at the bull ring in Birmingham has really gone down hill since first opening its doors. I must add they still have some lovely items, sometimes at really great eye catching prices. However, I find their ranges far less pleasing in general and have been somewhat disappointed recently with some of the items I have purchased instore and the service online is just terrible, with items not being delivered or its faulty/damaged. Buying from Debenhams online is not ideal, with them using Hermes for deliveries, which in my opinion has degraded Debenhams rather a lot. I think I will prefer to shop at other well known department stores in future when I can, less worrying and less hassle. Also large department stores like John lewis are in direct competition with debenhams. i hope they get their act together in store at least if not online! read more

Debenham's is like any department store -- it has everything you need at prices more expensive than they need to be. But for a one-stop shop, and some unique finds that you can't get elsewhere, it's worth the shopping experience. The Bullring Debenham's is very large, and is one of the two bookends to the mall - Selfridge's being the other. Debenham's spreads across four floors, and offers all sorts: homewares, luggage, kitchenwares, lingerie, kids, babies, men and women. Upstairs there is a nice cafe with some light salads, yummy sandwiches and decent coffees. Everything is reasonably priced, and the cafe is clean. The lingerie is some of the nicest in the Bullring, in contrast to tacky, low-quality, over-priced La Senza. Ditto Ann Summers. Debenham's lingerie features Freya, Wonderbra, and Panache, and a few other high-end ranges normally found on Figleaves.com for much more. They often have sales, and the lingerie is mucher cheaper at that time. If you have an hour-glass figure and need a dress for a special occasion, you really shouldn't look anywhere other than Debenham's. They have John Rocha, Jasper Conran and other designers, all of whom design for women with hips and boobs. On a recent trip there, I was stunned at the selection of wiggle dresses, nipped in at the waist, which Sophia Loren'd my figure in seconds. The shoe department is great, with plenty of Faith and Dune to keep me happy. The cosmetics and perfume department is large, featuring a Benefit (yay!) counter, and plenty of lovely L'Occitane stuff (for my next birthday, please see this review). The Clarins shop at Debenham's is having a sale right now where if you buy one item, you get three full sized items free. YAY. One of my favourite department stores and love some of the Debut dresses. Love the Matthew Williamson Butterfly bags and children's clothes range. Always has good sales on and offers like 10 or 20% days for store card holders or just in general. I can usually get a whole chunk of my Christmas shopping done here, from make up and perfume gifts to toys and clothes they have a wide variety of products. The staff are friendly and helpful - went with my mum when my brother was getting married and she had no idea what to wear so we use the personal shopper service which was free. She came back with so many options and was amazingly helpful with choosing things which complemented my mums shape and coloring. Something I would take advantage of myself in the future. read more

When they have a sale on you HAVE to be there! Its amazing just how great this shop is anyway and then when there is a sale it just gets better! They sell everything from clothes to toys to fragrances, and all at competitive prices. The clothing ranges from Debenhams own John Rocha and Jasper Conran to more high street chains such as Jane Norman and Principles. It is that time of year where we all start dashing around to get our Christmas shopping done on time and somehow we still manage to be panic buying on Christmas Eve. As you will see from my last shopping review that I haven't been for a while so this week has been a real treat to wander around the shops even if I am not buying things for myself. One of my favourite and most reliable shops to go to is Debenhams because it is big, has so many options and most of the time you can always find one so I don't have to worry about people taking things back and travelling miles as they are found everywhere. Anyway enough waffling and to the review. - What is Debenhams? Debenhams is a department store which sells clothes, pottery, gifts, perfume, makeup and many more things. - Where can I find one? Well you should be able to find a Debenhams in your nearest town as they are an extremely popular store to shop in. If you get stuck just go to http://www.debenhams.co.uk and do a search for your nearest store. - The store: Right now I will stress at this point that I will be mainly be referring to the Debenhams in the Bullring in Birmingham as this is the nearest one to me and the one I shop in most of the time. The stores do differ in size though and what they have depending on where they are, for example big cities will usually have bigger stores than in towns. The Bullring store is huge and is split into four floors. Each floor contains different products which basically go as follows: Floor one Pottery, Weddings, kitchen supplies. Floor two Men's clothes, children's toys. Floor three Women's clothes, perfume, jewellery. Floor four Women's clothes, restaurant. There are of course many more products but we will get to that later. Wherever you go though Debenhams will be split up into sections like above and I should know because I worked for the company for five years but again that's a different story. Anyway as you walk into the store you will often see a planner which will tell you exactly what is on each floor. As the stores are often very large, this is a great idea so that you do not waste time looking for where you have to go. You will recognise Debenhams stores by the huge signs they have above the stores and they are also often signposted first if you are in a shopping centre. The thing I think you will notice about Debenhams stores is that as soon as you walk in they are very clean. I mean by this not just the fact that the floors must be cleaned daily but every surface always looks freshly polished and the products are always neat and it never looks like a jumble sale. Seriously I don't know how they manage it because even in the mad January sales the place still always looks perfect. If you are visiting the store with a pram or in a wheelchair then you have nothing to worry about as the store actually have walkways so you can just saunter around the store at your own pace and only venture into the aisles of products if you really have to. This is good because the store does not get too cluttered with people and usually everybody can get around the store peacefully. Also all stores do have stairs, lifts and escalators so all floors are accessible to everybody. A good thing about the Debenhams stores as well is that most of them will have different services such as a personal shopper service. Now this is great as if you have an important event to go to then you can get them to recommend things to you and they will stick with you until you are happy. Also because it is Christmas if you go into stores now there is a gift service where you can tell somebody about the type of person you are buying for and they will help you find gifts for them. What a great job it must be to be a personal shopper. Another service you can get from Debenhams is a free makeover by the staff on the makeup counter. These are fantastic and me and my mom have had one, they assess your colourings and recommend products and it turns out really well. You do have to book these in advance though sometimes so it is best to go into the store and ask. The final thing I will tell you about the actual store is that there should be a restaurant in there so you will be able to have some food, a drink and a relax for a bit if it is needed. Depending on the size of the store you may get a café and a restaurant but it does depend which store you are visiting. The prices in the restaurant are reasonable and you can usually get a big meal and a drink for about £5. - Clothes: Now if you are female then this store is a godsend as it has a load of styles and basically clothes for every price range and occasion. The clothes sections will be separated into designer or concession so you can find the style and price range to suit you. This Debenhams is definitely better than the London branch in Bond Street. It looks amazing from that it will be a sin not to go inside. I like the fact that the store has a number of entrances and exits so you could come in from the ground floor, 1st or the 2nd floor. It is located in the Bull Ring shopping centre, which is ideal, as this place is centre of Birmingham. You will have no problem with transport, there is two train stations close by, (great for people coming from places like London) and there is a massive car park. You will find everything from gifts, clothes for special occasions, perfumes and of course something for men, women, young and old. read more

Debenhams is the type of all in one department store that you can spend hours and hours in - browsing, trying and buying! I really like Debenhams because it houses all the top high street names and brnaded lothing that I am into. I like the Jeff Banks and Jojn Rocha collections - they are good quality clothes It is a great place to pick up the odd gift or two for friends and family, especially in the run up to the festive period. Sale time during Christmas/Boxing Day/January and in the summer time is really good, and as long as you're prepared to put up with busy queues, you can get things 50% - 70% cheaper. read more

As a student I find this store to be expensive. I will buy the occasional item, particularly when they have a sale (which is usually pretty good) or a 25% off event. You can find anything from makeup and clothes to wedding dresses and cutlery. It spans 3 floors in the bullring and can be accessed via new street/corporation street or the markets. There are a number of large car parks conveniently located within close proximity but these are pricey as expected for parking in the town centre. If you are willing to walk a little further then cheaper parking can be found. read more

This is a very spacious store, spread over 3/4 floors. It sells womens fashion, mens fashion, fragrance, children's fashion, etc. It is very well stocked and there is a wide variety to choose from. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially in the make up department. read more

Was shopping in Debenhams rugby Elliot's field today. The person I was with was trying on things in the ladies fitting room so I sat on the sofa in the entrance but was asked to leave as it was in the entrance. The assistant had attitude and made me want to put my shopping back and leave. I realise men sitting in the ladies fitting room could be an issue but with the angle of the sofa it was turned away from the cubicles. If this is such an issue I feel the sofa should be relocated outside the main entrance. Very disappointed debanhams you can do better especially as other retailers have sofas in similar places and this is not an issue to them. I give you 1 star as thus is the lowest option. read more

I love this store, until I moved to Birmingham I had never really shopped in a Debenhams, what have I been missing, they have everything you could possibly need, Xmas last year was a dream, I went in on the evening did pretty much all of my shopping in one go, and that includes my posh frock for the Xmas party! It is ideal for gifts of any fashion, i've had wedding, christening, birthday etc, etc and when it came to wedding shopping the choice is fantastic, I got my Jewellery, make up, underwear, bridesmaid dresses and bags, the choice is just endless, Debenhams is now my no1 choice when it comes to shopping, truth be told I hate shopping but here I can get everything under one roof and go home it's perfect! read more

This place is absolutely massive and as such i find it kind of confusing. You can enter from any of the floors and there are escalators. The womenswear section is very vast - i would say the biggest, but its a maze and finding the department you like can be confusing. The changing roomsare also hard to find. They do have some very nice clothes in here and it s good to grab a bargain from the departments like miss selfidge and the others when the the same thing in their store is more expensive because it s not on offer, but because debs have 20% off you get it cheaper - always good to beat the system! read more

This is definitely the best department store in Birmingham as it's actually reasonably priced and has a good range of women's clothing. They have sales pretty often which is an added bonus. There's a good kitchen department and they often have demonstrations of new knives and kitchen equipment, which are a bargain. Beware of the make-up people trying to grab you as you enter from New Street Station though! read more

One of two main stores in the Bullring, its not as famous as the Selfridges store, but i think its much better. the selection is better and so are the prices. They often have sales around the shop which make it even better. They sell mens, womens, childrens fashion, fragrances, gifts, and household items so you can get anything you need here! The staff are very friendly but sometimes they do run out of stock :( read more
