I moved to Pittsburgh a few months ago and wanted to find a local gym. I've lived in MANY cities…read moreand been a member at MANY gyms, so I know what I want and need. As I researched nearby gyms prior to my move, Altus stood out - they had great reviews online and their philosophy/program offering seemed to align with what I was seeking. John was very responsive to my initial inquiry and after I got settled, I went to meet him for an initial consult. Our conversation gave me full confidence this was the place for me. I love strength training, so I wanted to work with a trainer to get me back into the routine of lifting weights, but I need flexibility - I travel frequently for work and often have to book trips last minute. During our conversation, we talked through everything - my history with strength training, my work and travel schedule, nutrition, injuries, goals, expectations, budget --- it was the most thorough consult I've had with any gym. I also had a preliminary session to determine my baseline (strength, range of motion, etc.) and get all the data measurements, which we use and remeasure to track my progress over time. Now that I've been going to Altus for a few months, I can genuinely say the entire experience - and Altus team - have been amazing. I immediately felt welcome and I appreciate the trainers so much. I've been working with Aaron for my individual sessions and squad sessions and it's been great. He's truly a 'coach' in that we're always talking through each set (about my form, the muscle groups we're focused on, how I'm feeling after each set, why we're doing certain things, etc.) -- it's educational, engaging, and fun. And he's always flexible with my crazy work schedule - accommodating changes when I have to go out of town, providing workouts through the mobile app that I can do virtually when I'm gone, squeezing in sessions when nothing about my availability is 'normal', and checking in regularly between sessions to see how I'm doing. I've also joined several classes and they're always fun - Heather, Cheri, Brandi --they'll kick your butt, but you'll love every minute of it. :) the Versa climber was a new piece of equipment for me --- it's killer but awesome! If you're looking for a gym that will focus on what you need and trainers who will champion you every step of the way to reaching your goals --- head over to Altus. They're the best!

I was surprised to find Altus in downtown Pittsburgh, located between a couple of fast food…read morerestaurants. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it completely exceeded my expectations! I signed up for a Versa climber 45 minute class (FYI - you can sign up for your first class for free). When I walked up the steps of the studio, I was blown away by the entire gym setup, in addition to the classrooms. They truly have something for everyone! When I signed in for class, I was given a heart monitor to track my workout and taken back to the climber room. The instructor, Cody, was so welcoming and full of energy! I was a little worried since this was my first time taking this type of class, and he made me feel so comfortable and continued to motivate us throughout the entire 45 minutes of class. This workout was HARD, but I felt so good after and would definitely come back to Altus to check out their other options in the future

This place is crooked and takes no responsibility in managing their customers' accounts and…read moretreating their customers fairly. We went in to the gym to freeze gym subscription and SIGNED the paperwork in March because our downtown office was closed due to COVID and we wouldn't come to the gym for a while. We haven't used the gym once since then but they charged us in March and started charging again since July. The manager Ron is extremely incompetent and rude when being asked to correct the error. No communication, no follow-up. Worst of all, we heard this Ron manager verbally insulted us when we were on phone with the front desk. This place is total trash. Members please check your past transactions with this gym and make sure you don't pay for the nonexisting service during lockdown!!! The level of mismanagement at this place is appalling. I'm getting ready to talk with my lawyer. Guys stay away and take your valuable money somewhere else!!

This gym works really well for my specific needs. I have been going here for the better part of 6…read moreyears now. The renovations are a big upgrade, as, prior to them, the place was getting pretty shabby looking. But, I don't evaluate gyms on how they look, but rather care the most about the equipment. There are ample free weights in the lower level, and the new hammer equipment is great. The second floor now has an impressive quantity of cardio equipment. There are always cardio machines open, which is great, because those machines in particular are prone to needing repairs. The staff is nice, but I pretty much keep to myself here. I can't speak to how good the personal trainers are, or anything, because I don't use those services. I wanted a place with ample free weights, showers, and towel service, at a cheap price, and close to where I work--this place checks all those boxes. Cons: this clearly is a high traffic gym. The equipment gets damaged, but doesn't get replaced for awhile (there's been a big chunk missing from the bicep curl deck for a long time, and one of the lower ab towers has had deflated arm supports for as long as I can remember). But, the price for this place is as reasonable as you can get downtown, so I don't mind paying a little less and using the clearly used equipment. The weights weigh the same here as they would at, say, the River's Club. Members pay a monthly fee, and then every six months, you get another additional charge kind of out-of-the-blue. It's probably so they can say "hey, your bill is $20 a month," when, it's actually $27 a month, but whatever. It's still reasonably priced enough where I don't care. I guess cancelling requires a 30-day notice, or something; I've heard complaints of that procedure, but I haven't cancelled, so I don't really care about that. I have had my membership paused due to health problems, and the gym was very accommodating through that process. But, with that said, there has been some times in the past when the hot water just didn't work, when the soap dispensers in the showers hadn't been refilled, there's a broken dispenser in the men's locker by the sink that no one has bothered to fix in a couple of months, etc. Again, this place checks all the boxes for me. That's why I've been going here for 6+ years. But yeah, it isn't the Taj Mahal of gyms.
