    Milk Chocolate salted caramel
    Janelle M.

I found out about Dean's Sweets looking for chocolatiers who made chocolates that are made and peanut and tree nut free facilities and also vegan friendly for the vegans out there. I called and placed a phone order to be shipped from there store in Portland,Me to Sacramento, Ca. I ordered milk chocolate salted caramel, Dark Chocolate caramel and Vegan Mix for a friend. The salted caramel is the best I've ever had and mean that to the point I called to let them know their caramel is the BEST!!! The candy is pricey, but I'm all about quality over quality and I've order now from them a few times. When the weather starts getting warmer shipping will be higher. Lol! I'm going to put me in a big order that candy is so good. The quality is amazing. Dean's Sweets is my go to for my chocolate and caramel fix hands down. I'm so grateful to find this company and thank you for catering to us with peanut and tree nut allergies and vegan's alike.

Chocolate Stout, Cayenne, and super Cayenne!

If I close my eyes I can still smell the aromas of cocoa lingering from inside the store. The shop is very small, but filled with a lot of little joy in every corner (including treats & toys for your pets!) As a chocoholic I have to say this place is elite. It is pricey, but worth every penny (you can easily spend $10 on 5 little pieces of chocolate). The quality of the truffles are out of this world. I purchased two chocolate stout truffles, one cayenne, and one super cayenne. The super cayenne was my favorite, but because I love spice. The cayenne powder excited my taste buds while the cinnamon danced around in the background. The sweetness cooled off the heat from the cayenne during the entire dance. It was an experience. Just take a nibble, close your eyes, and let the performance take place. The cayenne was a mild version of the super cayenne and the chocolate stout was excellent. I absolutely love stouts and porters - by far my favorite type of beers. The chocolate stout truffles are infused with Allagash Black which is a nice tribute to the local brewery. I've always disliked when you try something and it says it's supposed to taste like one thing, but then you don't even get a hint of that ingredient. Well, that does not happen here. You can taste the ingredient and then some. Nothing is overpowering, everything coalesces beautifully. These aren't just truffles, these are works of art. I will save this place as a special treat because it can hit the wallet hard especially with an addict like myself. Stop by and try some samples!

I'm surprised how tough it is a to find a chocolate shop that sells truffles in the city. I found a number of places that sell candy and fudge, but "fancy" chocolates was a bit tougher. Naturally, I was quite excited when I found Dean's Sweets on Yelp. The inside of the shop is clear and beautiful, with an open view of the kitchen in the back. The gentleman who was behind the counter was very friendly, happy to chat with my husband and I (we're from out of time), and have lots of info to offer on the chocolates, as well as some great samples. In the end, my husband and I decided to set a box of 16 truffles (8 for each of us), including 2 champagne truffles to ring in the New Year. I waiting until now to write the review so I could actually try the chocolates. Notably, all the truffles we chose wee the dark chocolate versions, and I found them to be very delicious. The chocolate shell is thicker than what I usual have (i.e. places like Godiva), but that isn't a bad thing. They had the expected bitter tinge that dark chocolate has, but the sweetness was there too. I'll certainly be back!

The Foodie Tour took us here on one of the final stops and these truffles were definitely wonderful - mashed potato chocolate (see last paragraph for explanation)! The samples of 5 different flavored truffles laid out on the display case sure helped though! This small shop is owned by an adorable husband and wife team. They have some super, imaginative, creative chocolate truffle flavors including: - Hot coffee - Not too coffee flavored, but a hint of spiciness at the end. Creamy in the middle with a dark chocolate shell. - Levon apricot chevre - I hate cheese and yet this one I had to take my hat off for. Lemony with only a hint of stinky cheese. *Some food for thought* apparently, ME used to be the #1 potato producing state, and some smartie put mashed potato in the middle of a chocolate bar! Dean's carrier on this tradition (kind of) by putting just a bit of potato into their truffles. Toldja they were unique!

Gross Confection recently announced on social media they would be shutting down the bar/desserts service while remaining open as a bakery. My wife and I came here many a times for an end cap to the night for one last drink and delicious and beautifully made desserts. From times in their dimly lit space that gave off romantic vibes or even enjoying our desserts in the summer sun outside people watching, every time will be remembered. Timing worked out well and we were doing a staycation in Portland and knew we needed to add a stop here one last time. Thankfully we got our names in on the waiting list early enough Friday and got sat as one of the last tables. We each had one last phenomenal drink; my wife and Apricot 75 that had a great tart kick of apricot and lemon. While I enjoyed their Chai Fashioned which spelt like a chai but had that boozy bourbon warming you'd expect. Dessert wise everything sounded good as always but we settled on two. The Goat Cheesecake and Pineapple Cake. The cheesecake was the perfect sweetness without being cloying and the blueberry sorbet on top paired so well. The pineapple cake was moist and tasted so good we needed to scrap the plate clean. I'm sad that Portland is losing this amazing dessert space but glad it's not a complete goodbye since they'll operate the bakery still! If you somehow read this today and have the chance make it in for one last visit tonight before they close their doors!

Their website lists about a half dozen, but the last time I was here there were just two: the sourdough chocolate chip cookie and the matcha and black sesame butter mochi. I'm guessing those are regularly available (they also do fun seasonal specials, so be sure to check their socials), but don't come with the expectation that there's going to be a big variety. The drinks include coffees, teas, and a variety of matcha. For me, this is NOT the best matcha in Portland. Matcha Mood is. The matcha here is good (maybe in the top three in the city), but the iced matcha with miso maple syrup and almond milk I recently had for $9+ was just okay. The drink is (literally) half the size as one at Macha Mood for the same price, and there wasn't any flavor of miso or maple. I've seen some internet buzz claiming THIS IS THE BEST... as a local, I don't agree. And that's okay; you might find your new favorite here, so it's absolutely worth visiting. They also do other fun spontaneous matcha flavors, so be sure to follow them on social! Check out their shop as well: loads of chili crisps and hot sauces, condiments and spices, jams, matcha powders and loose tea, pickles and other preserved foods, sweets, vinegars and oils, fermentation ware and kitchen goods, etc.

There's records being thrown down, cool lighting, nice decor and even super friendly folks. The employees here are beyond nice and welcoming. One was called a salad of some sort (sorry, blacked out) and it was delicious. The other was just as good. Ordered the eggplant app - do not leave without this. Absolutely amazing. For food, we ordered a rice bowl with pork sausage and a noodle bowl (with lobster and clams). Don't remember the names. Both were absolutely fantastic. The flavor profiles are just incredible.
