I have had a great experience with Dr. Shay. He is calm, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares for his patients. However, it is nearly impossible to reach the front desk. No one answers the phone, and the voicemail box has been full for weeks. I have been calling for two weeks straight with no response. At my last appointment, I asked the front desk why this keeps happening, but I was immediately cut off, clearly because Dr. Shay was in the room and she didn't want him to hear the complaint. This is extremely frustrating, especially since I am nine months pregnant and cannot come in physically just to make an appointment. I should not have to chase my healthcare provider like this. The doctor is excellent, but the office staff needs to improve. Please do better. read more

I had axillary and breast reduction surgery performed by Dr. Dean almost a year ago. For me, Dr. Dean was a good surgeon, but a bad doctor. I've had 3 follow up visits with him and although he would ask the general, "How are you doing?" when he walked in the room, he NEVER asked me if I was still experiencing numbness or if any sensation had returned. He also never told/warned me about spitting sutures, dog ears, or cording, in fact, I had to learn about all of those things and almost everything else about my reduction on Reddit. There were many times when I tried to reach Brenda by phone and email and rarely got a response and I think I figured out why during my second followup visit. After I was placed in the room by the front desk she went through her voicemails on speaker. I kid you not, she went through no less than 10 voicemails and deleted each of them right after they said, "Hi, Brenda." She never even made it to their names, least of all why they were trying to reach her before she deleted their messages. I can only assume that the reason she rarely returned my calls is because she deleted them, too. A few weeks after my surgery I was still in too much pain to play phone tag with Brenda so I emailed her. I had painful golf ball sized lumps on both of my sides and the pain had been keeping me up for days at that point. Two days after my initial email she still hadn't responded so I emailed her again, this time with pictures and she still didn't respond, so I had to turn to Reddit and other online doctors for advice. When it was finally time to get my staples out, Dr. Dean allowed an intern to be in the room and I'm so glad that she was there because she was able to point out a staple that he had missed. Around 3 mpo I was still unable to fully lift my arms and discovered (from the wonderful ladies on Reddit) that the cause was "cording". I called Brenda and informed her and she said she would get my insurance to authorize physical therapy and it could take around 3 weeks. I waited 4 weeks before I contacted her for an update since I hadn't heard from her. When she finally answered the phone she told me that she had attempted to put in a request the same day that we had spoken but because I had changed my insurance it was denied. I was livid because at that point the cording had traveled from my arms down to my fingers and it was extremely painful. I informed Brenda that I didn't change my insurance, I had changed my primary doctor and it would have been nice if she would've let me know the day that I was denied so that I could have taken care of it back then, and instead of apologizing or saying anything, she just went silent. After literally just a 2 minute call with my insurance company the denial was removed and Brenda was free to submit a request. Before I called my insurance, Brenda told me that once it was cleared it would automatically show up in the system on her end so there would be no need for me to call her back to confirm. Well, surprise surprise, it showed up and she still didn't do anything. I kept trying to reach Brenda but by the time she finally returned my calls, Dr. Dean had gone out of the country so I couldn't see him for my 6 mpo appt. and had to wait until he returned a month later to finally speak to him. When I told him about the cording he had no idea that I had it, not that it mattered because despite him saying he was going to put it in my chart for Brenda to get physical therapy approved for me, she still took another 2 MONTHS to finally do it. I emailed Brenda asking if she would submit a request to my insurance ASAP for me to get the revision surgery (I ended up with 5 dog ears) that Dr. Dean and I had discussed at my last 2 appointments because I'll be moving soon and I might have to change my insurance. That was in January and it's almost April -- still no email, no phone call, no letter, no nothing, so I guess I'll have to get my revision done by another doctor which will probably be for the best considering all of the trouble that I've been having with this office. It feels very much like, "We already got our money, so good luck!" All in all, it's been a very disheartening experience. Now that I'm stuck with dog ears, it's like I traded one deformity for another. I'm glad that I got the surgery, I just wish it was from a different doctor. read more

I just had a series of micro needling treatments with Dr. Dean and the results have been incredible!!!! A Horrific Experience That Ruined My Confidence I was recommended to Dr. Shay Dean by another reputable skin doctor, convinced he was the right man for my cyst/mass removal. How wrong I was. From the very start, my consultation visit left me with an unsettling and uncomfortable impression that only worsened on the day of my procedure. During my consultation, I already felt a disconcerting vibe in the office, but I hoped it was just my first visit jitters. That hope was shattered when the actual procedure day arrived. I felt completely uncared for and unimportant. The staff, particularly Brenda at the front desk, were shockingly rude. When I explained how sensitive my skin is, my history of keloids, and my deep anxiety about this being my first-ever surgery, Brenda simply smirked and dismissed my concerns with a flippant remark: "Honey, it will just be a small line and it will disappear over time." Her callous response was not only insensitive, it felt like a slap in the face. The situation deteriorated further in the procedure room. My boyfriend, who was with me for support, witnessed my mounting distress when I noticed an intern was assigned to perform my surgery instead of Dr. Shay Dean himself. I immediately voiced my disapproval, emphasizing that this was the first cut I would ever have on my body--on my shoulder, a highly visible area that is crucial for my modeling career. Dr. Dean's response was nothing short of infuriating: he insisted that his intern needed the experience, i was one of the patients he used as practice for his interns. Truly can't believe i ruined my shoulder for trusting this asshole. When the intern made her first cut, he remarked that he would have done it differently--cutting in the opposite direction. I now bear a huge, red scar on my right shoulder, a constant reminder of the negligence and lack of care I experienced. I trusted Dr. Shay Dean and his office based on a recommendation, only to have receive the out come i was trying to avoid, all those warnings in the review were proven true. If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. over all I'd say this was the most awful experience ive had in my life and now i have a scar that will remind me everyday so thank you so much for not doing your job and using me for your practices like we are not human. I've been to Dr. Dean for a few Botox sessions and he does an incredible job! It looks subtle, yet always makes such a huge difference. I've been to other places where I ended up feeling self-conscious afterwards because my expressions felt and looked unnatural, but I have all the regular movement in my face (without the wrinkles!) and never look frozen after seeing Dr. Dean. He also has a wonderful bedside manner and really takes his time studying your face and administering the injections. Awful practice, Brenda has no integrity or ethics for that matter. Dr. Dean just goes along with everything she says. They took $8400 from an approval I got from Alphaeon and when I canceled the surgery which was only $5,000 they wouldn't refund any of the money to Alphaeon. They kept trying to convince me to get something else done. After two years of fighting, they refunded part of the money since they still kept $2,000 and did not take responsibility for their unethical business practices. The results have been amazing, the single breast which was operated on now looks just as the other non affected one does. Stellar Hydrafacial! Paulette Is a Wizard! Delighted esthetician I already love moved to plastic surgeon/med spa across the street. Hydrafacial was euphorically phenomenal. Basically microdermabrasion, removing buildup from pores, but not simply scraping/sucking, it simultaneously flushes pores with hydrating nutrient fluid. Felt deeper extraction, yet cooling liquid makes procedure itself feel far gentler (is that possible?!) 6+ different cleansers/masks/creams, dermaplanning (removing top layer of dead skin cells), which seems to make hydrafacial more effective! Dr. Dean is the Botox magician!! He took care of me before my wedding and was meticulous. He spent extra time with me making sure I wasn't in pain, I was not nervous, and easing my worries about looking natural but refreshed. I was SO happy with my results and the pictures look amazing!!! If you want to look refreshed, natural, and younger, go to Dr. Dean for your Botox! I know I will never go anywhere else. I have had Botox many times before but was never as happy with the results. This place is terrible. My husband went in to get a procedure done on his face , cyst removal to be exact after being referred over by his primary care doctor and they were very careless and unprofessional. The day of the surgery he had students perform the surgery instead of him doing it himself. The following day his entire right side of his face was swollen and we rushed to the ER where they gave him after care instructions and prescribed him with antibiotics something he didn't even do. Today once more we came to the ER , even though we followed along with the aftercare instructions the ER provided us as soon as we removed the gauze , a piece of his skin/cheek was hanging off. Turns out the stitches came off completely and now he has an open wound the size of a dime . Extremely unprofessional my husband is in pain due to this careless mistake of letting students perform the surgery instead of him. Be careful when going here for any surgery. read more

Where do I begin? I went to him because I had a huge lump protruding from my breast, it was painful and my idiot primary care physician had no idea what he was doing! Sent me to get a MRI which if you ever had one you can't proceed if you're claustrophobic, sent me to get a ultrasound came back inconclusive, mammogram technician couldn't get a reading so in pain I begged the primary physician to get his act together and quick! He sent me to a oncologist who actually knew what she was doing, although she is a cancer doctor she knew Dr. Dean personally as he reconstructed many of her patients after a mastectomy. My insurance immediately made provisions to see Dr. Dean which made my stress less. He knew exactly what the issue is and put in a immediate referral to have surgery. What I must share with you is he not only was able to get my insurance to do my surgery for the issue but he was able to do the reconstruction which was extremely necessary but usually considered a cosmetic surgery which is absolutely unbelievable to think they'd allow a woman to live with Frankenstein breasts! I'm now in my third month of healing and am absolutely thrilled with the way my girl(s) are healing, yes I had to have the other one fixed as well although it was out of pocket he made it that financially I could afford it... the office staff are incredible as well especially when you are calling constantly with questions never do they make you feel you are a nuisance. This is information for people considering this doctor for medical services such as removing cysts or growths under the skin. If you're going to have a procedure done that includes cutting into your body don't assume any doctor knows all the details or has even taken the time to look at your records of what is going on with your body. That is the lessoned I learned. I made the mistake of thinking that the doctor understood why I was there and the details as to why I was there based on the records and information sent from my regular doctor. Wrong! I would assume any doctor would review prior medical information on a person they were about to cut open. Wrong! The doctor did not review my prior records and I made the huge mistake of assuming he would do that as it is his job. It is very clear in my paper work that the Lipoma I had was under the muscle. This was the whole reason my primary doctor referred me to this surgeon. It is also a procedure that requires a fully equipped hospital room which I now know. I assumed that the surgeon knew this and knew what procedure to use when removing a Lipoma from under the muscle. Unbeknownst to me apparently this surgeon did not look at my prior medical records. He told me and his assistant told me it could be done right there in his office quick and therefore I would not have to return to their offices. This happened during the pandemic too ok. I did not want to even do this procedure but I was sold on the statements they made that it would be done now and no more doctor visits. Sounded good to me. I'm lying there on the table in his office with my back sliced open and he states..."Oh this is under the muscle?"and announces I'll have to come back again for another procedure to be scheduled at a hospital. Just for reference the previous doctor that I visited didn't even exam me because she "READ MY MEDICAL RECORDS" which clearly stated that the Lipoma was under the muscle. She did her job correctly and saw she could not remove it successfully at her office location. This guy either didn't do his job or didn't care? I don't know other than what he told me at the time which was "he didn't know". Maybe he is a great plastic surgeon but he does not read medical records and I would not refer him to anyone for any medical procedures. read more

To start off I initially was referred to this place by my primary care doctor and it didn't seem bad as they seemed professional and willing to work with me to remove a cyst I had on my face. Once the actual day came I went in and that's when I felt things changed, this Doctor who was supposed to do the procedure himself , decided to let his students do the procedure. They then proceeded to perform the surgery, when I got out they gave me after care instructions I followed along and right away I noticed it didn't feel right. I rushed to the ER because the swelling on my face was too much. unfortunately the ER couldn't do much because the steristrips were still on so they prescribed me antibiotics something they didn't even recommend me to get . The ER was more detailed on what to avoid and how to continue to care for my wound . Today once more I'm rushing to the ER due to the fact that the entire steristrips finally came off and a piece of my cheek where they did the surgery is pulling completely off my face. Very painful thing to deal with since it is extremely sensitive (in my face) and unprofessional of this place. Do not come here at all for any type of surgeries. read more

I'd approach with extreme caution. I had a breast augmentation done with Dr. Shay Dean in 2013. I went in for follow ups every five years or so after that and asked about the recalled implant issue with Allergan around 2018/2019. Due to a FDA mandate, Allergan ended up recalling one of their implant types -the textured type - because the textured implants were found to be linked to causing a rare lymphoma called BIA-ALCL. At my appointments, Dr. Shay Dean assured me that I had the smooth implant type and not the recalled product and took me through pictures on the Allergan website of the smooth implant type that he thought I had attempting to ease my anxiety about BIA-ALCL. He told me that I had nothing to worry about because I had the smooth implant and not the textured implant - when I in fact had textured implants in me the entire time. He told me multiple times that I had one product in me when I in fact had another product in me- one that was recalled for a cancer risk - this happened for 7 years. I can't believe a doctor would be so careless as to tell me I had the wrong product in me for 7 years. He actively told me I had the wrong product in me for years and persuaded me that I had nothing to worry about when I came in asking and inquiring about the textured recalled issue. I had to do an exchange/revision with another doctor. I had my implant card but he never told me to cross reference it or confirm the product type and he never did so himself. I actually called the front desk when I found out that I had the textured implant types and his secretary told me that I didn't have the textured type and dropped the call on me. I expected a higher level of care knowing the risks associated with the textured implants. I would have taken the textured implants out earlier if Dr. Shay Dean had told me that I had a recalled product in me- but he was grossly negligent and told me I had one type of FDA safe and approved implant when he actually had implanted me with the implant that had been recalled by Allergan and the FDA and told me this mistakenly for years. I think Dr. Shay Dean was just covering his back and lacks integrity. read more

They did not have her scheduled even though she had an appt. When she finally was able to reach the doctor's assistant, she was told a lie that they tried to contact her to reschedule. Dr. Shay Byron Dean is the most gifted and consummate professional in reconstructive & plastic surgery for breast cancer patients (as well as non-cancer patients) in Los Angeles. He is an artist and a perfectionist and will not only restore what cancer took away but he will also restore your confidence in yourself. I know this firsthand because he very compassionately gave me back my dignity following my own breast cancer diagnosis. He takes his time to get to know your case and carefully assesses what you surgical hopes and needs are. His patients end up looking like themselves again ... natural and healthy. He can and does perform a variety of surgeries & procedures, but I've noticed he sees a lot of breast cancer patients because his work in reconstructing breasts is by far the best in the city. He also works frequently with a gifted breast surgeon named Dr. Elizabeth Arena, who performed my mastectomy as Dr. Dean started (and recently completely) my breast reconstruction. He is also probably the most selfless, kind-hearted surgeon ever. He is a beautiful soul who spends his vacation time traveling abroad to other countries, providing volunteer reconstructive surgeries to people in need, many of whom are born with severe birth defects, and he funds these essential surgeries through his own nonprofit organization called the S.H.A.Y. Foundation. I think he is class all the way, right down to the fact that he can always be found in a suit when he's not in his surgical scrubs. I simply cannot say enough good things about him and his work. I love him so much. I was and am very fortunate to have had him on my surgical team throughout my cancer journey. I feel incredibly blessed to be his patient and confident I was in good hands. You will, too! Shelly and Brenda are horrible disgusting people unprofessional is putting mildly .. harnessed me about a referral that they allready received days prior .. very rude and condescending.
