This is a photo of the water coming out of the bathroom sink. The shower was the same. And no, it's not coffee!!!

Pro: Nice location. Con: Sketchy, noisy hotel "guests" who seem more like permanent residents. Brown water came out of the faucet and the shower. Seriously, like it was coffee on tap. We complained and were told by resort staff that the water was "potable". We said "Really?!" and then they gave us a gallon of filtered water. The hotel towels were not white but burgundy and dark brown. This indicates the hotel knows it's a continuous problem. Whatever the case, it's unacceptable and it's unhealthy and perhaps you should avoid this business until they improve their water system.

5 STARS FOR THE AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE! We got in late after trying to find cash to stay in the Ave. of the Giants, which then would have had to majorly back-track and would've been too late. With being so late, she still let us in anyway and was beyond friendly and very chatty. There were some card issues and she patiently helped us make accommodations during card issues. Helped us pick a spot over by the river and explained directions on the map as many times as this tired mama needed to hear them Campsite itself was partial hook-ups with a dump on site. All worked ok and was relatively flat, but the water has iron in it (red tint), so appears disconcerting at first. We backed our truck camper in with no issues and had no one to our immediate right. All was quiet at night with minimal noise in the morning (was a Saturday morn). Each site has a fire pit and other campers were happy to share their wood. The kids LOVED exploring the Eel River bed in the morning and seeing all the frog eggs, "baby fish," and baby crawdads, as well as trying to skip stones...an easy hike from our campsite. There were many other kids around so some toys left out and about, but nothing that inhibited our ability to enjoy the River. Be advised the dump is right in the middle of the road shortly near the entrance to the RV park, and others had left their hoses and stinky slinky there (??)...first for us to see. The RV park has a playground and restrooms (although we didn't use either), and cabins in site. The above area of the property has the motel area and maybe a store, but was so late or was hard to tell. Was a very friendly community as many seem to be living there, but beware -- the people living there, while trying to be friendly, make it a bit uncomfortable. They can be messy and loud during the day, and kids were running around all over. I would recommend this place as somewhere to hang your hat for the night but then move on. It's not a leisurely place to hang around. Not sure if we would stop through again, unless maybe we again were stranded.

Had to knock off a star because our room was so cold the first night: 64 degrees. Another couple complained about the low temp while we were at the front desk. The second night we were plenty warm enough, and they did give us another blanket on request. We did not try the restaurant, but definitely will on our next trip. I was in the bar briefly (we didn't have a corkscrew) and the staff ladies there were most accommodating. The hotel is 100 years old this year, and running some promotions to celebrate. Complimentary sherry in the room lasted both nights. Room deco was very nice. This hotel has personality, in the rooms, the hallways, and all areas inside and out. Fascinating antiques throughout. Would make a lovely place for a wedding and reception!!

The room was one of their bigger rooms. The only thing missing was information at check in about scones and tea from 3-4 pm. which would have been nice to know. Their side flower garden was super cute, and the oaks in the back are majestic. Make sure to look for a room with a fridge and tv if that's important to you- this room has it! but the historic ones don't always have those. Menus in the rooms of some of their basic fare would have been nice to peruse at one's leisure.

My grandfather and I booked a room here with double beds for a single night on a road trip up the coast a few days ago. I woke up at 3am to the feeling of someone watching me. I turned my phone light on and looked around and no one was there. As I laid back down I felt the space beside my bed depress like someone was getting onto the bed. Then, it was like someone wrapped their arms around my body. I felt like I couldn't breath or move. When I finally mustered enough oxygen in my lungs, I leaped out of the bed with all I had in me and turned on the light. Again, nothing was there. Room #23. My grandfather and I drove the whole length of the Avenue of the Giants looking for a decent spot to say for the night - with the idea of exploring the Redwoods the next day. We decided the Humbolt was our best option after seeing that many of the residents of the town were living in the hotel rooms of the other motels in the area. There seems to be a large homeless population here. Also many forestry service trucks were parked in the lot, which seemed to indicate something positive if they were staying there. However we were so wrong about that. The other issues with the room were that it REEKED of cigarette smoke. We've been back on the road for 3 days and our clothes still have a twinge of that smell - even the clean items in our suit cases. The shower had no official nozzle, it's like one you'd see at Venice Beach and there was either cigarette ash or mold on the shower curtain. My grandfather also found pubic hair in the tub matt. The overall cleanliness of this place was insanely gross. The other patrons of the hotel were also loud, kept their hotel doors open and were pretty intimidating.

Let's be clear: the number of stars here isn't indicative of a four-star hotel. But overall it didn't disappoint. GREAT view and the sound of the waves crashing outside were high on my amenity list. The unit itself is pretty bare bones. Cheap but comfortable furniture. Kitchen has pretty much everything you'd need to cook. Bed is okay, maybe a little hard. Really hot showers, which was nice. Managers are super nice and 100% responsive to any needs. We got one night free bc of their spring special, which bumped it up a star for us. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I HEARTILY recommend it? Probably not. But I have no complaints.

The rooms are comfortable and have everything you need. Complete with coffee maker refrigerator and super comfy bed. There is a television but I never turned it on because the view was intoxicating and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I was here right around solstice and so the day was very long and by the time it was too dark to enjoy the view it was bedtime. The hotel managers were friendly and kind and helpful. This place is walking distance from Gyppo the local favorite brewery. And also right on the lower Pacific Road which runs along the ocean. Close to Mal Combs Park. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone wanting the experience of sleeping right next to the ocean. You could hear the surf and waves all night long. It lulled me to sleep.
