We walked Main Street to get a feel for the old west town. Many stores are tuned to tourist shirts. Tours and casinos in maybe every source for lunch. I didn't see one the wasn't. Ha, even the gas station and laundromat had a casino. All machines as far as I could see. Still fun to see so much history. And the visitors center was very helpful. We walked Main Street

Great town for a visit!! The day I was here there was a classic car meetup. Too bad I didn't see the historic re-enactments. Visitor center is great too!

An interesting place to visit for a couple of hours and we would have been the poorer on our Black Hills - Mt. Rushmore - Badlands - Custer State Park trip in South Dakota had we not stopped in Deadwood for a look see. But we're grateful we didn't make plans to overnight here to be caught in what seems mostly a western tourist trap town. Some of which is owned by actor Kevin Costner it seems, with tour buses disgourging passengers to walk the streets. Costner put 1000 acres near Deadwood, a site of an ill fated planned resort, on the market the week we visited. But business must be booming in Deadwood itself given the opening of a large, new Springhill Suites and other Hilton family (like Hampton Inn) properties there. Still, our advice to other travelers would be plan in a few hours to see the highlights then move on to stay in Hill City SD as a good base of operations for your vacation. While we browsed the streets of Deadwood I wondered what my great-great grandfather would think of the town now. I remember the stories told by my great-great grandmother, who was alive to tell them up until I turned fifteen, of his visits to Deadwood when he was part of Custer's 7th Cavalry stationed near there in the mid 1870's and how in August 1876 Calamity Jane, with whom he sometimes rode, took out with an ax after the killer of Wild Bill Hickock, with whom she was smitten. Although the feeling was not returned my gramps reported. Calamity Jane rode like a man, he shared, and he meant that as a compliment. She also looked like a man, he shared, and he did not mean that kindly. I paid some attention to the stories of the history shared by my nana, but but now I wish I had an oral history of them as I tried to put together what I was seeing and what Great great grandfather must have seen. THIS N THAT: 1) ACCESSIBILITY: Sidewalks are dicey and some of the buildings have barriers to entry. Folks using wheelchairs will likely not find Deadwood a particularly friendly place to visit although "do-able" in parts. 2) EATS: if you're not going to eat in the one or two Costner owned restaurant there (Diamond Lil's and Jakes I think), "stay hungry my friends". Deadwood is marginal for eats options. 3) SALOON #10: Some history books say Wild Bill met his maker in Saloon #10 in 1876 after being shot in the back of the head while playing poker and seated, uncharacteristically, with his back to the door. There is a Saloon #10 in today's Deadwood that has fun with laying claim to being that place. But the fact is that in 1879 a massive fire destroyed much of Deadwood, including the saloon where Wild Bill was murdered, and the main street and buildings were moved some distance away. So this is just for tourist trap entertainment, today's place called Saloon #10 but still a friendly casino / bar. 4) BELLE JOLI winery's tasting room on main street is a nice place to stop in and enjoy the patio for a glass of vino on a nice day. Seriously. http://www.yelp.com/biz/belle-joli-winery-tasting-room-deadwood I wonder what the ghosts of Deadwood past would think?

Deadwood is a super cool city. The history and the authentic saloons/casinos/theaters are reason enough to visit this tiny town. It is located in the middle of the Black Hills and about an hour ride from the Keystone/Mt Rushmore area. And a beautiful ride at that I might add. We visited for a quick lunch before hitting Custer State Park and loved the ambiance of the place. You feel like you are back in the Wild West. We ate lunch at Deadwood Social Club, they have a fantastic outdoor rooftop patio that has great views of Main Street. The social club is above Saloon No 10, which is where Wild Bill Hickok was shot. So much richness and history in this place. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the Keystone area.

Historic Deadwood Old west style village. Nestled in deadwood next to spearfish canyon. Very beautiful even if it snows.

I completely love Deadwood! There's just SO MUCH to explore..... so much history! And it is absolutely beautiful. From casino's to gift shops, to museums & restaurant, it's all so unique. I especially love the road and the light posts... odd I know but they were so pretty! I stayed at the First Gold Hotel which is just a very short drive from the main casino and restaurant area. I would have walked except it was 26 degrees when I went. And I California city girl in the cold is NOT COOL! I wish I had more time to explore and focus but I was too busy trying not to freeze to death. Check out some of the photos to see a little bit of Deadwood and some of it's history.

Just a tourist trap with lots of 2 bit casinos. Cute old architecture, but ridiculous parking situation, and cheesy souvenir shops.

Our room was not ready until 5:30. As we had just flown in from Florida, I really wanted to go to the room and change out of our travel clothing, but that was not an option. Our first afternoon in Deadwood was effectively ruined as there was nowhere to leave our bags and change clothing. The hotel was recently remodeled, so our rooms were very nice, and the mattresses were comfortable. The shower was fine although the water temperature fluctuated, and it was impossible to find the exact point that wasn't either too hot or too cold. The whole hotel vibrated constantly, which made a bunch of appliances in the room rattle or even make weirder noises. I had to leave the microwave door open because closed, the rattling was too loud for the kids to sleep. Breakfasts in the breakfast room were typical Hampton and quite good (for being free). Very friendly staff. Waffle machine with two flavor options and all sorts of different toppings, breakfast sausage, fried eggs, oatmeal, biscuits and gravy, toast and cereal. Juice and coffee. On our last day, there was no breakfast offered at Hampton. We were redirected to the restaurant at the Sheraton Four Points. Of course, that place wasn't open yet. And, once we arrived, they were not expecting us, and they wanted a coupon that had not been provided by the Hampton. Thankfully, it was just a short walk back to get things sorted, and thankfully, we weren't in a rush that morning, but still. Parking is across the street. It's through the casino. You need a new scan code each time you drive through, which comes from the front desk. Because of the delay in our check in, our parking was comped, but I believe it's about $15/day. The lot is long and narrow, and if there are big pick up trucks, it feels cramped and precarious.

The location within Deadwood is nice, in a central location for walking around the area's shops, casinos, and stores. I was able to easily explore the area on foot in the evenings. The hotel lobby looks nice and modern upon arrival (a good first start). Check-in was smooth. I had a room with a window that faced inside towards the lobby, which I was a little skeptical about at first but ended up being great because it reduced the potential for road noise that sometimes plagues hotels. I wasn't in my room much, so not having a window with natural light to the outside wasn't a problem. The room itself was clean and solid, with good space for spreading out belongings. I found it comfortable and quiet, a good place to sleep after a long day. Breakfast was perfect for what I wanted - a hearty meal with a number of options that I could fill up on before heading out for a day of hiking - eggs, sausage, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, some breads/muffins, oatmeal, pancakes, cereal. Parking is a couple minute walk away, in a parking lot with a gate. I didn't mind it since the weather was nice and I didn't have a lot of items to take back and forth. In other situations I can see how that could be bothersome. The hotel, since it is affiliated with the Gold Dust casino, also had a deal where you could get a coupon at the restaurant across the street along with some slot play for a discount. I expected to lose the money for slots (and I did), but it was a good excuse to check out the casino briefly.

After checking into my room, I grabbed a beer and went down to the sportsbook to make a bet. I took a seat to relax for a minute and put my beer down on the table in front of me. The bartender came over and asked if I wanted to order anything. I told him no. He then picked my beer up and said "We don't serve this beer here. You can't have outside beverages." He then threw the beer in the trash, said "There you go" and left. I was stunned. I couldn't believe that he did that. The proper way would have been, Sir, we don't allow outside beverages. I'd be happy to get you a beer that we serve. Had I have been this employees supervisor and had seen the way he treated a customer, I would have pulled him aside and immediately reprimanded him. This may be the rough and tumble town of Deadwood, but those were the old days. Surly bartenders are no longer the norm. Tourism keeps the town alive. This AL Swearengen wanna-be has singlehandedly succeeded in ruining my stay, and perhaps to the point where I won't stay at this Holiday Inn again. It's my suggestion, that if you stay here, think twice before you patronize the sportsbook bar. You may inadvertently tip someone who couldn't care less about you. Quick Tip: Wear your walking shoes. The way this building is set-up you'll be walking through a maze to find your way around. I had a great plate of Tortellini in the restaurant.

I would have liked for them to leave the TVs out, but I understand that, for hotels, they are basically as necessary as having a bed. I also waited to write this review until we'd stayed at another historical hotel down the road, for an apples to apples comparison. Staff were friendly and excited to share. We were shown to our room & given a small tour of the property, including the gorgeous ballroom, which was being set up for a private even. They've undergone restoration, not renovation. They've stayed period-correct & everything from the style to the furnishings reflect this. Rooms were quiet & clean. Our room was a shower only room. As I'm half mermaid, I like having a tub option but not a deal breaker. There was a tea cart out, which we found to be a nice touch without adding a lot of cost for them. We appreciated the addition of hallway seating nooks & spent time there daily. My favorite was the exit lighting (see pic), absolutely charming! What they did right comparatively: decor & hospitality throughout the stay. Staff were friendly & daily housekeeping was offered. On check-in we were asked where we came in from, what we were here for, with genuine interest and eye contact. The thought put into each furnishing was evident. So quiet, never a slamming door or loud guest. No odd odors! This is HUGE in a property of this age, when the surfaces have soaked up a hundred years of cigarettes & other stenches! Parking lot is attached with guest spots reserved- no 2 block hike to the car lot for any item you've forgotten. What needed improvement comparatively: communication. The pre-arrival info only made sense after checking in. Arrival was a bit odd, nothing to indicate we were in the right place. We roamed the casino a bit, then approached the bar for assistance. The barkeep was also the innkeeper & only one working. My husband drove around d/t no parking signage. At check-in, the cone stystem was explained & it's actually a really good system! I would definitely stay here again.
