We happened to stumble across this small museum as we were discovering Bryggen. We were taking in…read morethe sites and seeing a nice green space behind the Bryggen frontage and saw these old houses I wanted to take pictures of. Turns out it was a museum where you can literally step back into time and see how the seafaring merchants lived during the 1700's. The entrance fee was not expensive at all, about $17, which felt right for the amount of stuff you get to see. If you don't want to enter the museum, you can still walk around the outside to check out the architecture and gardens. There were fun lawn games outside. We didn't play any but I don't believe that they would kick you out if you wanted to play a bit and didn't buy a ticket. I would definitely recommend this place if you're into history and taking a step back into the live of people from the past.

The last gallery has the Last Dance restaurant & exhibit about the AID's crisis in the 1980's & the cruising scene around the corner. We paid $15 per person for admission to all four art buildings. We could've spent a week here but prioritize Norweigan art that we can't see at home. A lot of construction wowed taking place in front of each museum building and they actually looked like they were closed. I was surprised at how empty the museum galleries were. I appreciate the individual lockers to hang my bag and jacket while exploring the exhibits.

The surrounding grounds were quite lovely and free to the public. The weather was amazing when we went and there were people sunbathing in the grass and picnicking. There is a lot of greenery and the beauty of the area is spectacular. The walls around the fortress were interesting. We did an entire lap around the walls first, then wandered up to where the manicured grass and building were. Many of the buildings, like the royal residence/castle are no longer standing but there are two main structures of historical significance, Haakon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower. The exhibits inside were worth the entrance fee to the museums, in my opinion.

If you ever visit Bergen, you have to visit the Edvard Grieg Museum, even if you're not a music…read moregeek (like me). What you'll have access to are the museum itself (includes an exhibition and movie), Grieg's residence (opened for us at 11 AM), his grave and composing space, and a ridiculously amazing view of a fjord. To get here, you can take the tram ("mini-train" is what the locals call it I think) to "Hop." Then, you can plug in the address into Google maps and take a scenic 30 minute walk to the museum. To get back to the city center, you can ask the people to call a taxi (takes 15 minute for a cab to come after calling it), or you can walk back to the tram stop, though I don't think Google maps has its address so you'll have to be careful to find a landmark that can be located. The people who work there are incredibly nice and like to help out. One of the workers gave us a mini tour of the villa with bits of history and gave us good suggestions about how to explore the area. The view of the fjord is behind Grieg's composition room, and it was absolutely amazing. You can walk out into the water on a stone path and enjoy a clear view of the mountains. It was really breathtaking. The museum is a must-go in my opinion, as it's much more than just remembering a great composer. I highly recommend it!

Only 2 or 3 buildings contained actors who recreate characters from Bergen's history. You are free to ask the actors any questions about Bergen's history. There's a short play in the main square where you learn about the perils of Norwegian dentistry in the 1800s. I'm happy the museum preserves these old buildings, but it did have the feel of a tourist trap. Would have preferred seeing more actors to activate the many empty buildings.
