I don't…read morebelieve you really have to do this because the line for ticket buying is pretty short and there are kiosks along the way inside to buy tickets. Also, if you happened to be in the line to buy tickets, you just enter afterwards, instead of waiting in the prepaid ticket line, it's kind of a cheat. At least that's what we observed. The line for the prepaid tickets was extremely long, going down the block for a bit but it did move fast. We got into line around 235 pm and we ready for the funicular around 3pm. For the length of the line, I thought this moved very fast. When you enter the gates to the funicular, be aware of the people counter. It counts down the amount of people that can enter. So if you're a party of 5 people and it says only 3 more can enter, you will be split up if you enter. There are like 5 gates so you have to pay attention if you want to stay with your party. There were MANY people who did not seem to understand this and started yelling at or crying to the kids working the line. There is nothing they can do, it's a safety issue and you will have to meet your party at the top of the mountain. Also, the last lane (most left handed) is for disabled people or people with strollers. It's kind of a d*ck move to go to that shorter line if you aren't one of these people or in a party with one. But karma hits hard and if you do try this little sneak, you'll probably end up waiting even longer because the special car it leads to has a small capacity and that line moves slow. Other than that, this funicular is a nice ride up and down the mountain, with plenty of spectacular views and cute moments to see.

The last gallery has the Last Dance restaurant & exhibit about the AID's crisis in the 1980's & the cruising scene around the corner. We paid $15 per person for admission to all four art buildings. We could've spent a week here but prioritize Norweigan art that we can't see at home. A lot of construction wowed taking place in front of each museum building and they actually looked like they were closed. I was surprised at how empty the museum galleries were. I appreciate the individual lockers to hang my bag and jacket while exploring the exhibits.

I'm not really into that sort of thing, so while I did walk along the front, for me, the best part of this area was walking down the alleyways and seeing the unique architecture up close and personal. There are so many fun little woodworking details if you really take the time to look. We were here in the middle of summer, so a very busy time, with a lot of people around, and it wasn't too overbearing people wise. Especially in the alleyways and around back. There is also some green space and ways to get to other tourist sites in the back, so heading that way through the alleyways is a great adventure to be had.

While the museum is not a very long experience, it does have beautiful views showcasing Norway's glassy waters as you walk down to Edvard's composing cabin. We happened to stumble across this small museum as we were discovering Bryggen. We were taking in…read morethe sites and seeing a nice green space behind the Bryggen frontage and saw these old houses I wanted to take pictures of. Turns out it was a museum where you can literally step back into time and see how the seafaring merchants lived during the 1700's. The entrance fee was not expensive at all, about $17, which felt right for the amount of stuff you get to see. If you don't want to enter the museum, you can still walk around the outside to check out the architecture and gardens. There were fun lawn games outside. We didn't play any but I don't believe that they would kick you out if you wanted to play a bit and didn't buy a ticket. I would definitely recommend this place if you're into history and taking a step back into the live of people from the past.

The surrounding grounds were quite lovely and free to the public. The weather was amazing when we went and there were people sunbathing in the grass and picnicking. There is a lot of greenery and the beauty of the area is spectacular. The walls around the fortress were interesting. We did an entire lap around the walls first, then wandered up to where the manicured grass and building were. Many of the buildings, like the royal residence/castle are no longer standing but there are two main structures of historical significance, Haakon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower. The exhibits inside were worth the entrance fee to the museums, in my opinion.
