They do make strangely good coffee (for a chain and a coffee snob, that is ;)) and there are always available plugs and free wifi. In fact, I've spent many hours here working when the wi-fi was down at my house. The only downside is that it can get incredibly hot and stuffy here, but I suppose that's really only a problem in the summer... all two days of it ;)

The pastry was quite good crispy on the outside and soft inside and my black coffee was a perfect good morning pick me up. A lot of places in Amsterdam still make coffee light and weak like Nescafé, including the "5 star" hotel where we are staying. But not at Kaldi, which is why this place gets 5 stars. Plus, the staff was kind and helpful, going the extra mile to answer questions. After trying a dozen coffees, this place serves the best. You can get a light Brazilian or dark Siciliano. First time here, I had a Siciliano cappuccino. Next time a Siciliano Americano. Both excellent. (Don't do light roasts.) Also, coffee supplies galore from beans to full immersion cones and high-end espresso makers. And gifts. All this, three tables and a counter with stools in back with free wifi makes this place 5 stars.

Because seriously, who doesn't want to quench their Amsterdam thirst before sipping on some very fine Espresso? I venture here mostly when the Neighborhood market is going on, which means throngs of locals, their kids, and possibly, their touristy friends, all looking to get some really good coffee without breaking the bank. There is usually a long line out the door...in today's case it took me about 10 minutes before I could even place an order. Oh, and the guy who took the order - total nice guy with a nice smile. The menu is really small - it's mostly a lot of coffees with some teas for people who like to drink teas at places with names that begin with 'Espresso' and some sweet stuff to go with said drinks. The ovens were working overtime, one batch after another in quick succession. Those fresh muffins will keep calling your name until you cave in and eat one. The apple pie actually had smoke erupting out of it, it was so fresh. I dig the espresso here...it's sort of pricey at €2 for a small, considering that one is never enough. The taste - oh so good! (It's really not that hard to find. It's next to Ketelhuis.) I got an espresso for sitting at a sunny picnic bench outside while an electronica music festival beeped and buzzed in the park. The atmosphere was calming and cozy, perfect for sipping warm drinks on a cold winter day.
