But we knew we had to try it, and life is short. It is a tiny stand located along a central canal in the heart of the city. Business is hopping here. We got the picked herring and kibbeling, which are the main staples here. The pickled herring was, well, something you either love or don't. It has somewhat of a gelatinous texture that can be off-putting, but when you take a bite with the sides of sweet pickles and onions, it shines. The Kibbeling was out of this world. Perfectly fried with a crunchy batter that had a hint of, hmmm, curry, maybe. It was amazing. Although the batter was thick and tasty, it didn't outdo the delicious cod. The staff here was friendly, and having this Dutch food along a canal in Amsterdam made for a memorable experience. They also sometimes have fish gumbo and prepared take home meals which are fresh and tasty. The bear herrings I have had here in Amsterdam. Ellen, who is one of the staff, prepares them fresh as ordered and is meticulous in her preparation. Ellen is also very knowledgeable about all things fish and can definitely recommend what would be best for whatever you need something for, be it dinner, BBQing, afternoon snack etc. she also speaks great English! Living in Paris, the firm, orange-tinged flesh of Pacific Northwest sockeye salmon is but a distant dream, a rich memory of a past life on the west coast of the United States. The occasional wild North Atlantic salmon makes its way onto my dinner plate or sushi platter, but more often than not I'm turning my nose up at the farmed stuff. So imagine my absolute pleasure when my wife dug up information on Frank's, and my subsequent fish-gasm, if you will, upon getting there and seeing the hundreds of real Alaskan salmon bellies hanging in the back room. That, ladies and gentlemen, was how my mind was blown. I normally try to eat local, organic, and all that other stuff. But I'll easily sacrifice my foodie principles for one bite of delicious sockeye salmon from halfway across the world. A small Chinook smoked sockeye salmon broodtje (sandwich on a roll) isn't exactly cheap at €7, but it's so worth the price for a subtle wave of salmony flavor you simply don't come across in this part of the globe. I don't even want to calculate what the carbon offset would cost, but it's still worth it. On top of that, the service is friendly and despite having a bit of a cold cafeteria setting there's a somewhat "gezellig" vibe to the joint, with lots of locals stopping in to buy varieties of smoked fish, fish eggs, and other things that would go nicely on a buffet table. The lovely lady behind the counter at the time told us that Frank himself is originally from Maryland -hence the Maryland crab cakes in the deli case. Among the rice and noodles, I was surprised to see that they also offer lontong. I got the Nasi Rames menu (€7.70) which comes with white rice, three vegetable dishes, two meat types, and an egg. My choices were terong blado (eggplant and chilies), tumis kacang panjang (spicy tempe and greenbeans), oerap (salad of coconut and bean sprouts), and daging bali (Balinese style beef). I also asked for nasi kuning (rice cooked in coconut milk and turmeric) instead of white rice and the lady behind the counter was happy to substitute for a small fee which I don't remember but I was fine with the price. Everything was properly spicy, and they do warn you if you're faint of heart. The food tastes like it should, except I think the daging bali would be spicier in Bali. Delicious authentic Indonesian food! A plastic bag costs a few cents so be smart and bring your own or else carry the box in your hands. On your way out, you can also pick up a few essentials in their small grocery corner like fried anchovies or Kecap Manis.
