It is a moderate walk from the Anne Frank House, in a lovely neighborhood. The poor girl must be overworked, though, because we waited over an hour for our lunch. She also forgot to bring the Jenever I ordered. Also, she would not accept our credit card; cash only. In total we were there from 1:50 to 3:40 on a Monday in July -- almost two hours. (I know because I took photos at the start and end of the visit). We weren't particularly in a rush, but then again we didn't want to spend almost two hours for lunch. I suppose this is not unusual for Europe, and I'm a hurried American. Or maybe some of the staff were on vacation. But I would add at least one star for faster service.

It sits in full afternoon sun with an amazing view of the St. Bavo Church in the Grote Markt. It's about as centrum of Haarlem as it gets. The bar / restaurant is GROTE indeed (huge). It has two floors of tables and the bar is very sizable. The outdoor has a really nice terrace area, under cover and outside of the canopy. There is a beautiful green shrub that is majestic which acts as a nice divider. The service is quite good for such a large place. I can't call it "gezellig" but I'm sure it has it's moments depending on where you sit and who you are with. The food I've had there is quite good. Looks like a great place for huge parties or just a quick coffee on the terrace in the wonderful afternoon sunshine. Get the sun whenever you can here!

Biggest problem is that smoking is allowed at outdoor dining, and because the outdoor is covered and heated, if someone is smoking around you it just hangs over everything and there is no escaping it. Made for a most unpleasant experience. I know that it is no fault of this particular establishment, and more of a problem of society in general, but it did interfere with our experience at this particular place. Still, I did not subtract any stars for it. The 4 star review has more to do with unfriendly service. Not rude, I just expected friendlier service in a location like this. Service was fast and friendly, and we were able to get in, eat, and pay in under 40 minutes. I could imagine that this place offers some beautiful views on a sunny day, but all we really saw was fog. All in all, a pretty solid place for a quick bite if you're in the area.

Their menus are all in Dutch which presents an issue for foreigners at this international train station. I went off another review and ordered the beef stew which was hearty, generously portioned and nice to have on a cold day. I took one star off because there was too much meat, sodium and not enough vegetables which could be a plus for some people. The purple cabbage sauerkraut accompaniment was pretty good! This beer is brewed locally in Haarlem and Hoofddorp and this beer cafe opened on June 4th and is the first in Amsterdam. I'm a fan of this beer and would recommend the Hoppenbier and Mooi Nel IPA - because I like hoppy beers and IPA and these two are particularly drinkable. They also have a selection of other beers. I tried the St. Erik's IPA by st. Erik's Bryggeri and my friend had an Arrogant Ba$tard Ale by Stone Brewing co. They also had Doctor Brew, Rocket Brewing co beer (which I'd highly recommend) and BrauKunstKeller beer along with many others. It's a relatively classic beer hall format with square tables that can be individual or joined for group beer sessions. They have outdoor seating too and there is a selection of brewery merchandise available here. The staff are friendly, attentive and treated us like regulars. There bitterballen were genuinely the best I've had (most flavoursome and genuine size). They also made an amazing beer-can chicken with (I think it was?) Cassava chips. This was something one of my group had been craving and the team at Jopen were happy to oblige us. I've recommend this place and I'm sure I'll be back soon over the summer. :)
