I am here 2-3 times a week now, and it's generally a pleasant experience. I really like the guys in the skate shop since they're always pleasant and friendly. I wish they had a bigger selection of the kids stuff (jocks, socks, helmet parts, etc.) because I really prefer to buy locally. But I have to buy elsewhere elsewhere too often when the local joints like this one don't have what I need.

It's a great visual experience on top of having nice ice. A plus is that aside the rink is a flat patch of rectangular ice for beginners to practice on. One thing I don't like about skating at the Reilly Rink in Cleveland Circle is that beginners flop all over the ice. You can sit at the side of Reilly and time it on your watch and not go more than five seconds without seeing someone fall on the ice and possibly cause a pile-up. Kirrane has a nice solution for it. Reilly is free and Kirrane does charge $8 for Brookline residents (as of early 2026, fees may change with inflation!!!) and $10 for non-residents. They also rent nice quality skates, both figure and hockey style, if you don't have your own. The absolute best is to come in December to early January for the afternoon public skate and watch the sun set and the sky change colors off to the west before they shut down at 4:30pm. If you're lucky there will also be some snow in the surrounding trees adding to the experience. The only negative experience I has was that the staff didn't confront some pain in the butt kids. Some kids around ages 10-12 went on the beginner ice and were skating really fast and then diving and sliding on the ice as far as they could and knocking into beginner skaters, including young children. Neither their parents nor the staff said a word to them. I was close to going hockey player and roughing some of them up to teach them a lesson. They really should crack down on this before someone really gets hurt.

There were people literally skating within centimeters of you on purpose to try and make you fall. Not to mention it was rather hot in there and peoples wind wasn't smelling too fresh. (If you can't skate, I don't suggest taking a bathroom break with your skates on because, well yeah, use your imagination. Not to mention the floor is slippery as all hell in there) There was not anyone behind the snack bar for quite some time and then when she did come over, it was like she was under too much pressure. (Not sure how, the oven wasn't even working) so we could only get drinks (Luckily we brought our own skates because the way those people were sweating and smelling, no thank you) If YOU CAN skate && I mean SKATE SKATE (you know I mean business because I said it twice) then definitely give it a try. It's not a beginner friendly rink by any means. (No bars to hold on to or any order at all) There was an older woman and man in there getting their money honey, right in the middle of the rink. Out in the front they have a handful or two of parking spots, but out in the back there's a really nice sized parking lot that I covet for the other (more convenient) skating rinks I frequent. Five long benches were plenty for the decent sized crowd that I found sprawled out on the rink this afternoon. Everyone left their shoes and bags under the benches since there were no shelves or lockers available for our use. But the gal's bathroom with 3 toilets, 2 sinks, and a super strong blow dryer, was really clean and well stocked with toilet paper and soap. I had my own skates, but my friend rented a pair of hockey skates for $5 at the snack bar window, which also had hot chocolate and a small selection of candy for sale. One of my favorite things to see there is young children learning to skate by pushing milk carts around for balance. Every time I skate at the Kelly rink people are friendly, fun and full of life. The Mo-town and bubble gum soul music pumped through speakers is a bonus. The rental skates are pretty uncomfortable - but when have you ever rented comfortable ice skates? For comfort, as always, you have to invest in a pair of your own. And I'd like to make a correction to some earlier postings: first of all, there are no "horrid" neighborhoods in Jamaica Plain. The poor and blue collar half of JP that hasn't been driven out by gentrification (i.e. the part where I live) is in many ways the heartbeat of the community and deserves to be cherished by all - visitors and newcomers especially. For those who only feel comfortable on tree lined streets with three car garages I would be glad to recommend several wealthy towns in metro-west for you to visit. A "sh#*-show of humanity"? You're talking about a free community ice skating rink, full of children in a poorer part of town. Show the same respect you would expect at your hometown "Galleria" rink. Happy skating!

There are a lot of things I appreciate about the Kelly Rink: it's free (or a mere $2 to rent), it has a warming house, the ice is fairly well-groomed, it's usually populated by school kids until its early evening closing, it's really easy to find (just along the Orange Line behind the Stony Brook T), and that I can hear the jammin' 94.5 FM hip hop piping from the speakers both on the ice and floating off into the winter wind on my walk home. The rental skates used to be worn leather but they have since switched to plastic mold skates with ski boot bindings, so I'd recommend bringing your own pair. There are still a few weeks left in winter. If you're in JP, stop by for a spin.
