Maybe the horses (all named and either perpetually or seasonally "adoptable") are cracked for wear, showing signs of their 90-year-old senior citizen status. Maybe they don't have the admittedly flashy variety of animalia found in newer carousels. Looking at you, grasshoppers and ostriches of the Greenway. Maybe they don't have the bronze rings of Oak Bluff's game. And luckily, that means you don't have jammed fingers or hyperextension pains. Maybe that'll have you proclaiming, "No gimmicks? It's not worth the $3 fee!" But these maybes just make you a fuddy-duddy. This covered delight is five minutes of innocent fun that'll put a priceless grin on your two (or 22) year old. Love the Carousel, Have been going to the beach for years & finally have been able to bring my son... Last year we went but he was a little too young & we just went yesterday & he LOVED the Carousel... I didnt grow up in the area so dont have the memories like most people, but do enjoy going to the beach for the day & riding the Carousel... You're married." ~ Old time carnival worker When the beachfront Paragon Park amusement park closed down in 1984, local preservationists grabbed up enough parts at auction to reassemble and house the glorious carousel in a twelve-sided stucco building on the boardwalk. And it's a skip away from the tiny one room museum that will give you the entire history of the park and life on the Massachusetts South Shore when radio was AM/FM and satellite was just some nebulous hunk of junk way up in the sky. This merry-go-round has been going around for ninety years and I wonder how many young couples have hopped on amidst happy toddlers and nervous parents, dreamily pretended this ride was only theirs. That's a lot of dreams in ninety years. And you can still get your chance. These ponies still strut. There are over sixty them to choose as your mount along with two Roman chariots for those of us who just want to sit down as the everyone else goes merrily around. The horses are in a constant state of restoration done handily and artistically on-site by artist James Hardison. The painting techniques used are similar to those used in 1928. Bright Japanese colors along with glazing mediums are applied by hand with brushes. I hate the phrase "step back in time" because that makes an activity sound outdated. It's very much present day fun. And yet it's just a merry-go-round. You get on and the friendly staff makes you feel special. Close your eyes, hear the music and maybe you go back to dreaming of your first love, your present love or just your love of being a kid. Then you go next door and get an ice cream cone or some fried clams. Simple. The Paragon Carousel has a mission statement. "To offer a vibrant community experience providing an atmosphere where the majesty of history and artistry meet the world of fantasy and fun, creating lasting memories for all who enter its doors." While spending summers at Nantasket Beach, when I was growing up in the 80s, Paragon Park was always a draw for my friends and I. Shortly before my family sold their summer home, the park was sold and part of my childhood ended. However, volunteers banded together to purchase the carousel and had it moved to it's present location. After nearly thirty years at the new location, many of the horses have been restored and the historic carousel continues to thrill children of all ages. At $2.50 a ride, it is a steal and brings back wonderful memories of summers gone by. read more

Love this carousel! Not only is it one of the only remaining pieces of Paragon Park but it also is a must see place when you go to the beach. I started taking my daughter to the Friday morning story hours. They have a different character come in each week and share there story. We saw sleeping beauty. My daughter loved it and has talked about it all the way home. They have ride cards that you can get and each time you ride you get it stamped. This makes story hour easier since you don't have to worry about getting a good seat and standing in line for ride tickets. read more

Brought my family here for ice cream! Prices are awesome !! $4.50 a medium ice cream which consisted of three ginormous scoops. The kids liked the flavor choices, I had a cookies and cream and it was delicious!! read more

This review is for the Paragon Park Museum, which is down the street a little from the carousel. Great little museum. Fantastic photos and artwork of Paragon Park. Cool souvenirs. Lots of history here. The park opened as a "mini World's Fair" in 1905. The "giant coaster" opened in 1917. The carousel was rebuilt in 1928 after a fire. There was another fire in 1955. The park closed around 1984. Still a very fun place, maybe the funnest place on the South Shore. The museum is open this year through October 27th. read more

This a magical place for kids, and a godsend for parents (or uncles, in my case). Beautiful horses, great energy and atmosphere for families, staff who care about the history of the building and its carousel, and in making sure families are happy. A bargain at $2.50 a ride, and a great way to entertain the kiddies. There is also a fun playground on the beach side of the street (just across the parking lot) and it offers another hour of activities when you've had enough rides. read more

This was a fun blast from the past carousel, the whole family had a great day we even pretend to be on vacation seeing all the sights and eating at every open restaurant. The kids all screamed outright that "this was the best day EVER" read more

This was one of the cool places to have your birthday party when I was in 1st grade. I think I went 3 or 4 times that year. I distinctly remember running from one of the boys who was trying to kiss me. Anyway - this carousel is a relic left over from Paragon Park - I'm personally not old enough to remember the rest of it. The carousel is beautiful and one of the old ones with all the different animals and beautifully painted horses. One of the things you HAVE to do when you go to Nantasket as a kid. read more

Rude woman approaches my wife and I and tells us we can take pictures on the carrousel for $100.00. We just got married 10 minutes prior to this on the beach, and this woman was looking to cash in when she seen we had a friend taking pictures for us. She went out of her way to be rude to us, saying we can't even take pictures of the grass in front of the carrousel. The weird thing was that we were just walking by and weren't even planning on walking into the carrousel. I felt compelled to write this review based on the attitude the owner gave us that day. What a beautiful carousel! It has mostly been restored but there are still some needing restoration. You can adopt them and help with their care. It's very cute. The people working here are nice and easy to deal with. read more

The carousel holds a special place in my heart, and I haven't been since sometime in the early 80's when I was just a young whippersnapper afraid of the (now defunct) Paragon Park roller coaster. I was delighted to see that it's still in operation, for just a $1.75 a ride. The carousel is a treasure, one that shows its age graciously in the peeling paint of the chariots and horses that surround the gilded mirrored center. I'm betting that the other visitors to the Paragon Carousel must've thought I was "special" for the way I swung my feet while watching the cranks and gears and staring in rapture at the beautifully painted ceiling. It is sad but there are not too many old carousels left and this is one of the few restored and still standing in New England. This sits in old Nantasket Beach on the corner and looks pretty good for it's age. It is quite large and there are plenty of old style horses to choose from. Tickets are $2.50 each and you can buy a card to ride several times in a row. However the ride is pretty long and I bought a 5 pack but really didn't need it. The parents are free with a paying child. There is also a Paragon Park museum next store which displays some old memorabilia from the days of when there was an amusement park here with a rollercoaster. Overall a treat and the kids will love it! they do take credit cards but be sure to bring cash to park. This area gets plenty busy and it is $10 to park in the lots during the season! read more

We had my daughter birthday party here. It was a great day. Easy to plan and afforable. Only problem is they don't have bathrooms.

A true slice of Americana still lives here on the shores of the beautiful Nantasket Beach. Just $3 will transport you back in time with a ride on the "grand" carousel. Great face painter is there in the summer, too. Lots of memories made here for decades. Next door is a museum with Paragon Park memorabilia and a nice little ice cream and snack shop. Within walking distance is a mini golf and an arcade. Right across from the beach and the marina on the other side. Nice day trip from Boston or anywhere on the south shore. read more

Great piece of Hull history. I still remember it when it was down the street in the park. The people doing the restoration work should be applauded for their hard work and dedication. The carousel and its atmosphere deserve a 5 star rating. Unfortunately tonight's visit was marred by the attitude of the ride operator who seemed to be annoyed that kids were present and riding on the "museum" as she called it. Her snide remarks under her breath and to her colleague were not appreciated by my family and others visiting. I can understand being protective of such a historical location but lecturing children and their parents before they even get on because "all kids do is run on and start climbing on the horses" is a little absurd. The carousel was designed for children of all ages to ride and enjoy. I hope the other volunteers that operate the carousel understand this or one day it will unfortunately be just a museum artifact. read more
