Saw four shows in two days (Friday-Saturday) featuring the same improv artist, @ianbagg. He was terrific. His material was different for every show. The other performers were funny too, but their canned routines got stale the third and fourth times around. The venue is downstairs...tricky at night. Service was great. There's no cover charge, but everyone is expected to make two purchases. The club is big and the food is what one normally expects at a comedy club. Seemed that most snacks and drinks were about $14.00. Friends suggested the Old Fashions were sub par. We all agreed the Long Island Iced Tea was the best value. Finding a place to stay in DC is a big issue, making it tough on out-of-towners. read more

Coming from NYC (regular at the Comedy Cellar, Carolines on Broadway), I have pretty high expectations of what a stand up comedy show should involve. The last two I've been to were for Mo Amer, and most recently, Brian Simpson. I've only been to main room shows and always reserve the two seaters which are front row seats. I've never been disappointed by the performance and I like how the staff is well organized, friendly, and prompt. I haven't had any issues to speak of and truly appreciate being able to have a professional stand up arena to attend to when a comedian I'm a fan of comes to town (other than the ones in congressional hall). I feel like they cultivated it's own culture and has a strong fan base to speak for it. You can feel the excitement as you walk through the doors. The food is not good but I don't go for the food. I'll usually order something to share - we had nachos with chicken last time and it was a hot mess but I picked out the chicken and jalapeños to chase down the wine and Tito's I consumed. The pricing for seats are very fair and I find their site easy to navigate. Can't wait for the next show! read more

We were invited to join another couple to see one of their favorite comedians, David Nihill. We had never been to DC Improv before and didn't know what to expect except for what I read on their website, which actually is very informative and funny in itself. A very helpful read prior to attending or booking your tickets. We booked general admission and figured the experience from what I read would compare probably to what we experience when attending performances at Birchmere where the doors open at a certain time and the sooner you get there, better your seats might be. Luckily I did read in advance that if you have friends attending same performance and want to sit together, to let the box office know, which we did. So our seats were blocked as a 4-some and whichever couple got there first would get seated and the other 2 seats would be waiting their arrival. Entry was easy, greeted by a VERY energetic staff member, Marcellus (sorry don't know how he spells his name) who we told this was our FIRST time, so he was SUPER Excited and gave us a lot of intro information about not using your cell phone in the club, where to go if we needed to use the phone, what to do if you needed to step outside for a moment and where the all important restrooms were. We had GREAT seats, unfortunately our waitress, I think her name was Alana was NOT so great. She was slow, messed up the drink order, then took way too long to return with the correction, did not return to ask about refilling waters or further drink orders until it was "last call" time. I kept seeing other wait staff with water pitchers giving their clients refills, but our table section was basically neglected. We ordered dinner as there is a 2 purchase minimum (combo of drink and or food, doesn't matter). There are no free refills on soda, only free thing you can get is water, which is fine for me, but need to bring the pitcher by once in a while, especially when eating. We both had the chicken tenders which actually was VERY good. They came out VERY hot, so freshly made with your choice of sauce. We both selected Honey Mustard, which was more mustard than honey, but good. Once our friends arrived, she ordered a cheeseburger and she said it was excellent! She felt it was prepared fresh and tasted like good ground beef. We also ordered basket of fries, they came out hot, but they were the "play-dough" type, not cut from the potato. They were were ok, ketchup and honey/mustard made them better as we aren't fans of the processed type of "french fry". I really wanted to try the sweet potato fries, but the waitress did say they would be too much for 1 person. I'm glad she said that, as the Chicken Tenders was a hearty portion and sharing the regular fries basket was PLENTY of food. I found the establishment nicer than I was expecting. Remember, we're used to Birchmere. Seemed VERY clean, restrooms were clean when we arrived. Space is relatively tight, but not as bad as I was picturing and SO glad we were a table of 4 because if you go as a couple, the way the seating is done, you most likely will be sitting across from your partner instead of next to each other unless in a 4-top as we luckily did (If you reserve seats, those are tables around the stage and you will be sitting next to your partner there). Because we arrived early, we ended up with really great seats close to the stage. There are TV's visible in the room, so I doubt there is a bad seat anywhere really. There are a few High Top tables around the perimeter, which probably would be good viewing spots as you would see above the heads of people sitting at all the tables. Stage is elevated, so if you are sitting further back and behind other tables, I'd imagine you can still see well enough, UNLESS you get near the couple BIG columns that are in the room. Lastly, the COMEDIAN, David Nihill was FANTASTIC. Quality entertainment and looks as if they do attract worthwhile talent. We definitely will go back as we found a good parking garage for an over-sized vehicle that didn't charge extra fee and it was a 3 block walk, not bad. I cannot comment if there were any service charges on our bill as we didn't realize the waitress combined the 4 of us onto 1 tab despite the fact that we arrived 45 minutes earlier than our table mates AND ordered as soon as we got there. She also never asked, but having never been there before, didn't think she would combine our tab. read more

Pros: - cool venue - they really hype up the crowd - central location of DC - seems like they get some great acts - the host will really put on an engaging show Cons: -the two drink minimum is kind of overkill on top of pricy tickets. I understand trying to make revenue but it makes for an expensive night out - i don't blame the venue for this, but at least two comedians admitted they were already drunk or high before getting on stage and it totally caused issues with their act. It wasn't worth the ticket + two drink minimum seeing two comedians, already impaired, just ramble on stage and repeatedly say "sorry i'm high/ drunk already" and not be able to remember their act. Again, not the venues fault but it didn't make for a great experience. read more

Went for a date and the service was great, although they were busy, they made sure to check in with us as much as possible and brought our drinks/food out in a timely manner. The staff was super nice and the show that was put on seemed well-organized with the show starting on time and no issues being observed. We had a great night at the DC Improv! We were admitted promptly (no waiting in line) and seated immediately. There is a 2 item minimum per person and my hummus, pita, and raw veggies plate plus my strawberry daiquiri fulfilled the requirement. The kitchen provided the food quickly and the server delivered it hot. My companions enjoyed their daiquiris, Greek salad, chicken wings, and cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. Aries Spears and his podcast partner had the audience in stitches. This was a quick, fun, casual night out. Just know that live comedy can be risqué/edgy so this isn't for people who are easily offended. I went to DC Improv with some friends last night and had a good time. Will call for our tickets was outside on the sidewalk (only took a few minutes for a sold out show), and then we walked downstairs into the basement where DC Improv is located in the building. When you walk in, they seat you at a table, and it seemed like there isn't a bad seat in the house (given the height of the stage compared to the tables). There's a two-item minimum per guest, so we each ordered a bottle of water (sparkling or still) and a beer or a glass of wine. The wines were not great, so I probably should have ordered a beer even though I don't drink beer often. They also offer cocktails and food. The service was pretty seamless and our orders didn't take long. The venue was fine, and the show we saw was good, but I'd rather a place just charged more per ticket than require a two-item minimum for each person in attendance. It's been years since I've been to a show at the Improv. My sister's fiance got us tickets to see Donnel Rawlings, and if you're a Chapelle Show fan, they you know why we were excited to see his show...Ashy Larry..or the famous phrase "I'm rich b****" lol Parking is like any other situation in DC.if you're lucky you might get parking on the street. We opted to park in a parking garage right around the block. When we arrived, it was kind of confusing how the set up. Doors open at a certain time to allow people from the prior show to exit. So we had to stand on the side by "will call" you give them your name and they give you your tickets. It was pretty smooth overall. When we were able to go in, they sat us as a table, which had a pretty decent view. Each person at the table has a 2 item minimum, which includes food, drinks, water. All the comedians that opened up for Donnell were amazing and had us cracking up! The service was pretty good and our server was efficient. I stuck to seltzers, but my sister enjoyed the spicy marg they had. I liked the chicken nachos, but the crab dip wasn't a favorite. Can't wait for the next show! read more

DC Improv is a little gem that brings you comedy greats and good food. Went here to see Sam J and another time for an open mic night. They have a 2 item minimum, so I usually do an entree and a drink. I've had the burger and the chicken Caesar salad wrap. The burger was clearly frozen patties. They do give you 2 patties, so it's hearty. The fries are pretty good. The chicken salad wrap was good as well. This will be one of my regular spots. read more

I have been to DC Improv for many shows but this was the first time I ordered food. We came here for the Drag brunch show and they have a different menu for their brunch. I ordered the Improv Fried chicken sandwich in which you can choose your sauce from Buffalo, BBQ, Sweet Chili or Mambo and I chose the Buffalo sauce that comes with seasoned fries and a side of ranch. The sandwich was good but tasted better with the ranch dressing. My friend ordered the Chicken and Waffles but they didn't have waffles so they substituted it with French Toast. We also ordered the the mimosas to share since it came with a bottle of champagne and a side of juice of chose from Strawberry, OJ or Pineapple so we picked Strawberry. They brought our drinks and then the food came without utensils so we had to wait to ask for some. Then I asked if we could have a some more of the Strawberry juice. For dessert we ordered the Reece's pie which was good and didn't feel heavy. The bill comes and I asked why there was a double charge of Orange Juice $10 total and the waiter stated that it was an extra charge for the Strawberry juice I requested. Why wouldn't they disclose that it is an extra charge? Just a courtesy to say it will be an extra charge and I can decide if I want to proceed ordering it. So no I wasn't happy about that. I do like that now they offer reserved seating which is nice and don't have the pain on waiting in line since before it was first come first served. read more

I've been to DC Improv twice now and have enjoyed myself both times. There's a 2 item per persons requirement when visiting. The drinks are not weak and the food has been good each time! Parking stinks so I definitely would recommend ubering or metro. Service is good, no one was rude and food/drinks come out timely. Just note if you're a smaller party depending on the show you'll get seated with people you may not know. This did not bother us, but just be aware of that possibility. We've been to the DC Improv numerous times and always enjoy it. The food is good, the servers are kind, and the things are well priced. I'm giving this review today because of some top quality customer service. I had a huge mixup on my end (not the Improve fault), and called to get something arranged. The support who picked up was Brax, and she helped me resolve my issue that changed multiple times. I have to say, this was an amazing visit! So glad I got that instagram ad to see DeRay Davis. We arrived early as we had General Admission Tickets so seats are first come, first served. Also, there is street parking right in front starting at 6:30PM. As the seasoned transplant I am, I got there at 6:15 and sat in my car until 6:30PM. There was a gentleman outside giving us the Park Mobile code to make things super easy for us. Loved that! Once we got in, we went to will call and were promptly shown to where we could sit (anywhere that wasn't reserved). We sat in the center, third tale back, which is really close. For those who have never been here, the place is small and intimate. You will be close to strangers, but all in good fun. If you don't like the concept, reserve a table. There is a 2 item minimum once you are there. Of course most people ordered more than 2 items including myself. I had the quesadilla, an old fashion, and a Long Island Ice Tea. The old fashion wasn't giving what I needed it to give. The quesadilla was great! I will say you can taste the liquor! Service was quick and efficient! The opening comedian was from NY and super funny, then there was a gentleman form Baltimore and it was ok. A lot of people went to the bathroom during his set. This is a really great comedy club! I had low expectations and it was so much better than I expected. There are two rooms, and we saw our show in the bigger of the two rooms. The room is filled with tables. They seat you at a table depending on when you buy tickets. Some of the tables have better views than others, so book your tickets early. We spent a little more (tickets were about $40) to get front row tickets. The club has waiters, so get to order your food and drinks from your seat. They do have a two item minimum requirement, so keep that in mind. I ordered two of their cocktails and they were small but delicious. It is also easy to get to from Fartagut North or West metro stations. It is also located just down the street from DuPont Circle, so if you want to go out after your show, you can easily do that. read more

Typical bar food. You won't find anything healthy or keto here. But the vibe is always cool and lowkey. The comedy acts are solid, whether local or more famous acts. They keep the place entertaining. We were lucky enough to get tickets in the front row at Matteo Lane. They sold out at the speed of light so I was truly thrilled to get to go! The venue is really large, especially for being in the center of DC. It also has that legendary vibe since literally everyone has performed here before! We got very lucky to be placed front row. The staff was so excellent. They were just as hype as we were. We started off with some drinks. The espresso martini was good and so was the Long Island and the margarita. Cocktails were had if you couldn't tell. I also got some chili cheese fries that were delicious. The perfect snack for a night of laughing and drinking. All the comics were absolutely hysterical! Decent venue, saw Comedian Godfrey and he was hilarious! The venue accommodated my crowd and seated us close to the stage, which was very nice for one of my guests who needed special accommodation. Super impressed at how far the DC Improv has improved in service and attendee experience. We saw comedian Ryan Davis late Saturday evening (9:30pm show) and as much as I was looking forward to his set, I was dreading going to the Improv due to past experiences. They've really listened to customers over the years and drastically improved. The atmosphere was pleasant - very close quarters but it was clean. We were led to our table where our order was taken quickly. Our food and drink arrived quickly, too, and our waiter was not intrusive as other comedians were on the stage. The food was great. 4 stars because they dropped a lime wedge in my date's bourbon and didn't offer to replace. No biggie but the offer would have went a long way. There were many waiters working the room and we were able to order, eat and pay before the headliner. With a two item minimum per person, multiple waiters are imperative for timely service. I just remember a totally different experience years ago and was happy to see the improvement. It's now a well-oiled machine! read more

Let's face it...after the two years this world had, we could all use some laughter! This is a great local spot in DC thats serving up some laughs! The wait staff is on point here! Very attentive, which is a plus. The menu items are served hot, simple and straight to the point. The seating arrangement makes for no bad seat in sight. I didn't see an elevator for those who are unable to climb stairs, so this could be a problem. I'm not sure if they disclose that online when purchasing tickets because I didn't buy them. So it's crazy. I attempted to work here years ago, but they weren't hiring. After coming to this place, I completely understand why. This is not a place where servers and bartenders come and go at the drop of a hat. They've obviously been there a very long time. They are very seasoned in what they do because in a club like this you have to be very careful about how you move. Especially when you're dealing with a live entertainer. With all of that being said I HIGHLY enjoy this place. It is great. Yeah it's small but who really cares honestly, this is what a comedy club should be. It should be a place where the comedian feels comfortable and the audience feels comfortable. I am pretty sure there's some person from generation cupcake *cough cough* I mean Generation Z who will be upset at the rule that they do not allow any phones active at all but I think it's a good thing. If you can't stay off your phone for a max of two hours you need to talk to somebody and not Better Help online (Not like there's anything wrong with that). I'm talking you need to physically look at somebody in the face for whatever you're going through. I recommend this place if you don't get offended easily. Realize these are the places where before comedians end up on Netflix or where ever else; this is where they test their jokes at. Comedians are seeing what jokes hit and what jokes don't before they end up on those bigger platforms. So if you're here just to have a good time, have some drinks and some decent food (I just had mozzarella sticks. I was trying to keep it kind of basic, but they were good though!) then by all means this is your kind of place. Highly recommend. DC Improv is one of the best comedy clubs in the Washington, D.C. area. I've been coming to DC improv since I moved to the area in 2011. I've seen a variety of acts including Arnez J, Gary Owens, Tommy Davidson, and Sheryl Underwood. Last night, I saw Sommore. I also had the opportunity to meet the Assistant Manager, Antoine Griffith who provided top notch customer service to ensure my party sat together. There is a 2 item minimum per person. Which isn't hard to do , if you are hungry and that includes water. The food is pretty good.I usually get the wings, tenders, fries and /salad. I recently tried their Bahama Mama and that was tasty. Also, their apple martinis and cranberry and vodka have pleased me. I had the Carrots and celery as the Improv I pretty limited on vegetable options. Generally speaking, I usually go to to the first show on a Friday or Saturday night. So, If its a 7pm, show I will get there at 6pm, to get a good seat . The show is usually first come, first served. Suggestion for management, if tickets are told out in the showroom, I wish there was a way people can still see the show in another room or at the bar. The bathroom stalls are small. So, when it's packed, women are practically in close quarters. In addition to tonight, the tables are very tight and right next to each other. This is a great place for date night, to celebrate a birthday, or hanging out with the ladies! read more

The food was good, the service was great, and the showcase was HILARIOUS. My friend and I agreed to make a plan to come here at least once a month because it's affordable and fun. Staff is friendly and works hard. The set up is cute but some chairs are facing opposite the stage or behind large structural columns so I recommend coming early for closer seats to the stage. Some food is hit or miss though (I've been 4 times) so I recommend asking your server what their fav is! Overall this is a super fun place. I love love LOVE DC Improv! I have been coming here for years, and each time I have had a wonderful experience. I tend to see very popular comedians, which means I have to come early because the line outside gets very long very fast. I like to come at minimum of 30 mins before doors open. Once the doors are opened, things move very quickly. Staff are fast and efficient. They are also very helpful. I love how they ask us if we are comfortable sitting in a seat and not just forcing us there. (Of course if you arrive later and there are no other seating options, you will take whatever they have lol). The food is pretty standard for a comedy club. I ordered the spinach artichoke dip and the veggie patty. The patty was a little soft for my liking, but it wasn't too bad. I ordered a drink, similar to a Bahama mama, but I don't remember the exact name. The prices for food and drinks are standard, nothing too outrageous. All in all It's a fun atmosphere to be in. I highly recommend DC Improv if you are thinking about attending a comedy club. 10/10! read more

Had a fantastic time at the Improv a couple of weeks ago. I appreciated that they sat me even though I was waiting for my niece to arrive. The seating is a little bit tight. I have to give it up to our server, Naima, she was really working hard, carrying trays full of drinks through tight spaces. She made sure we had everything we needed to have a great time. The menu is basic bar food, we had loaded tots and mozzarella sticks, they were good. We were there to see Craig Robinson, and had no idea about who the openers were, but they wound up being hilarious. We laughed for 2 hours straight, it was great time. Can here recently for a performance that headlined Darren Brand and friends. He was very funny! Look him up by the way. Can't say the same for some of the other "comedians" who got up there before him though. Seats are first come, first serve! To get a decent seat, go early. Otherwise, you will be right at the stage and part of the show. You know comedians will call you out and make you part of their jokes so unless you like that kinda thing don't sit right in the front. The way the tables are set up you should expect to share the space with other people. This is not the place to be anti-social. You will pretty much be forced to speak to the people at your table even if you don't know them. They don't allow pictures or videos here, but I'm not sure how strictly they enforce that because I definitely saw a few people snapping pictures but without flash. They let you use your phone right before the show starts. They have a contest on a social media where you can snap a selfie and post it using certain hashtags for a chance to win a prize. Didn't really like the two drink and/or food minimum requirement per ticket. For one I wasn't that hungry so I ended up getting two drinks and they both weren't that great, but I guess they have to make money somehow. My friend ordered some chicken tenders and I took a bite but didn't really care for it. I could have gotten better tenders at McDonalds. So if they're gonna have this requirement they should at least be sure their cocktails which cost at least $12 are up to par. read more

Went to see a late night show with my fiancé and outside of the parking everything was a great, customer service was wonderful. Food came out quick. Did not have an issue at all with anything. It's definitely a small venue but decent enough size that you won't have any issues getting a ticket if you plan accordingly. read more

First-time visitors and I was glad we had prepaid for our seats because it would have been horrible to sit behind the pole. All seatting is super tight, but that is shared at the jump. So be prepared to get neighborly. 2 item minimum wasn't an issue as many locations apply the same type of requirements. They did have several options, and it could be food or drink options. Parking, information on parking, or access for shows was not helpful and the reason for 4 stars. The website needs to be updated to reflect viable options for early or late shows. Best comedy venue in town. We've been several times to see big and small name performers and all have been hilarious and made for an amazing night out. I prefer to pay the extra $20 or so for the front row when it's available just to make it a truly memorable event. But the whole place is small and intimate and perfect for what it is.
