After my breakup, I decided to get my first Brazilian waxing in about 5 years. My last waxing 5 years ago wasn't very good so I was expecting for the Brazilian to be painful and miserable. I came to Dawn with all the worst case scenarios in my head from internet searching what happens when Brazilians go wrong (and also the nerves of my first date in 7 years). After talking to Dawn for a few minutes, I felt much better about my decision to get a waxing with her. She gave me her phone number in case anything went wrong with the waxing and calmly explained to me what she was going to do. We quickly got into conversation and she put my mind at ease. The date didn't turn into anything, but I've been going to Dawn every month for a regular waxing (now with my eyebrows and lip) for over a year. Excellent facial. It was a relaxing hour and change. It was a nice set up and they had friendly staff. Now, the annoyances: **My appointment was at 1, but was told that she was running about 10-15 minutes late. By 1:30 I was in the spa room and we got down to business by 1: 40. I was given a 10% discount for the wait--cool. **I wanted a Treatment Facial but received a Basic Facial and wasn't notified until it was over. She said it was because I use acne medication Retin-A. I filled out a form where I noted what products I use on my face, all including medications, allergies, etc. We also had a Q&A before the session started and talked about what I put on my face, how often, and all that good stuff. She would have known then that my facial would have to be adjusted but did not mention it. Just in case I cancelled? Not sure. I chose Dawning Tranquility because their Treatment Facial seems AWESOME! I also want to note that their website lists medical restrictions and it says "Hair removal clients must inform the service provider if you are using prescription acne medication such as... Retin-A..."-- but I was not a hair removal client. **She suggested I do facial masks a few times a week. I asked if she recommended any products. She said she sells a mask there and she can adjust the mix to personalize it, ok? ..... O..k...... It is not until I am paying to leave that she mentions that the mask she just mixed together costs $37.10. What the hell?!?! Who doesn't mention that it costs that much before mixing it? I could have rejected it but I just took it and figured I'd tell y'all about it. Here's how this interaction could have been better: she could have said "what you want to look for in a facial mask is ___ and ___. We sell a great product here and I can adjust it to fit your skin's needs. It costs $37 but I completely stand behind it." For perspective, a bikini wax is $40. Again, the process was really nice and I was soooo relaxed and it smelled amazing! But I was annoyed about these last two things. read more

Finally after 3 years of actually living in the city and having tried dozens of salons, I have found Dawn. I walked in at about 4:30 pm without an appt (wouldn't suggest it) but she kindly took me literally off the street and squeezed me in. Even though I was a "squeeze in", she didn't rush. She took her time, asked me if I was on medications, asked me about make up habits, really analyzed my brows. The wax wasn't too hot, she based before she put it on, and continuously checked for symmetry as she went along. I came in with the brows from hell...literally chewed up and ruined by every person I have allowed to let do my brows. Since moving to the city...my go to place was in Tysons Corner and I just can't make it out there anymore... She worked a miracle. Plain and simple. I will not let anyone else touch my brows anymore ever. I was going to try that brow place on GA Ave if this didn't work out, now I don't need to. I wish I could give her 10 stars... I don't usually write reviews; HOWEVER, I LOVE DAWN!!! Nothing about a bikini wax is relaxing or painless, so I won't to lie to you to tell by telling you that load of MALARKY. But if you must go through this medival form of Chinese torcher, then let it at elast be in a place that's clean with an ethetician who's professional, friendly, and as expedient as she is efficient. I love the online scheduling and the convenience of having a few establishments nearby to get a shot of Patron when I'm done. Dawn took my boyfriend for the mens facial on time and did a wonderful job while doing it. 90 minutes later he came out refreshed and his skin looked better than it did pre-bike (motorcycle) season. She is a pleasure to work with. My only gripe was not being able to book two new client appointments at one time but I understand why she doesnt allow that. I gave Dawne two chances. The first time she gave the excuse she was running behind due to a prior client that would not stop talking to her. I saw her approximately 45 minutes after the my appointment time. She apologized for the wait but offered no discount (I didn't ask for one however I noticed another reviewer mention they received one for the wait). During the facial I found her to be extremely talkative. I understand a few questions here and there but this was excessive. I could not relax because I felt like I was being interrogated with 50 questions (and this is not an exaggeration). Then she tried to pressure me to see the hair dresser downstairs and told her I would be stoping by to see her. I understand the networking aspect and supporting other BO businesses however, that is not what I came there for. The second time I made an appointment I arrived about 15 minutes early. I saw 3 other women in the waiting room and assumed they were there to see other people. Dawn came out and asked everyone who they were seeing. Just my luck everyone was there to see her . She proceeded to say she is running extremely behind. I did not get to see Dawn until 1 hour after my appointment time! The only reason I did not walk out was because my credit card was on file and I was worried I would be charged a no show fee. I've been to multiple spas in the DMV area and have never experienced poor scheduling practices like this. There needs to be a manager or mentor in place to assist with keeping the appointments on time. She does not cushion any space in between appointments which means when she is done...you can't even relax in the room a few minutes. You have to hurry up and get out so she can prepare the room for the next client. Then she didn't even know how much the service she provided cost and had to look up the price. She's nice but not professional in my opinion. Kindness is cool but good service all around is just as important. I don't recommend. read more

I just started going to Dawning Tranquility for my Brazilian waxes. The location is fantastic and the prices are reasonable. Dawne is very personable and professional. The space is tranquil and clean. Brazilian waxes are never fun or relaxing. But Dawne makes me feel instantly comfortable. I'm still learning not to tense up so much. However, which each new appointment with Dawne, my body is getting use to the temporary pain. I've tried both waxing and sugaring and my preference is sugaring. I no longer go here but that's only because getting here was too much of a hassle. But I came to Dawne for a Brazilian wax and she made my first time a pleasant one. I was pretty late, because I'm the worst at navigating DC streets, but she still took me anyway. She talked me through it and made me feel less nervous. And it was actually not as bad as I thought it would be. In addition, her prices are pretty good. The only downside is some awkward positions. And she charges for canceling appointments with too short a notice. I understand why she does that but sometimes things come up. And I just don't like having to pay 50 dollars extra. read more

I love Dawne! I've been going to her ever since I received my first wax about three years ago. Then, I was doing the basic wax but I've evolved ever since. About two years ago, I decided to try one of her facials and I enjoyed it so much that I started getting them monthly. While Dawne and I were unable to get to the root cause of my breakouts, she was still supportive and helped me find a dermatologist who would accept my insurance. I've read some of the other reviews and I will say that if you schedule an appointment, expect a 15 minute wait; however, I'm rarely ever on time so that works for me. But if you are the type of person to arrive on time or even earlier. Dawne will adjust your fee accordingly. I have tried several salons in the DMV for waxing, and Dawne has been my go-to for over 2 years now. That translates into more than 30 eyebrow and chin waxings and several bikini waxings. Dawne knows her stuff and actually worked with me on a long-term eyebrow shape, not just what needed to be done that day. We've discussed threading and laser hair removal and types of wax . . . I learned a lot from her! Also, we're usually chatting about something so it's a pleasant experience overall - not one where I'm repeatedly bracing for pain. For those of you who have hygiene horror stories from other salons, Dawne is not a double dipper for bikini waxes. And I haven't had the sustained redness or ingrown problems - because we talked about maintenance and which products to use. The products she recommended were normal drugstore products, not the high end salon products that other people push. Sadly, I have moved from the DC area and must now find someone new, but Dawne gave me some criteria to determine who would actually be good as opposed to just relying on Yelp ratings. Dawne is the best. I've followed her for several years now, she has a very gentle touch when waxing, but does a great job. My skin looks beautiful after a facial. She doesn't insist that you use her products, but will give you feedback on what you are using (she got me off of Dove after 20 years). Always flexible with scheduling (I usually re-schedule at least twice before I find a time that works for me). Super convenient location, right by the Eastern Market metro stop. I went to Dawning Tranquility for a brazilian wax. I have to confess that I haven't had one in like a year and it looked like the rain forest ! I was terrified. Place is easy to get to via Metro train. It's right outside the station. This was my first time coming to this place, and my first time going in for a Goddess wax. I was extremely nervous at first, well I was nervous during all of it. But Dawn did a good job at trying to keep me calm during the process. Boy did it hurt!!! She moves quick. I feel like I could have gotten mine done a lot faster if I didn't ask her to pause every five seconds. She did a good job. However, I noticed that I still had a small patch of hair that was missed. There were a few of them, the other ones was because my hair was apparently short in those area and the wax couldn't grab it. I noticed this while I was still there and she was kind enough to go through and tease and even wax an area again. But once I returned home, I saw that there was another area (hair longer) that wasn't waxed. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should just save that area or tweezers it one by one. Overall, I think I would return again. She is very polite and professional, I like that about her. I'll go again for a second time to see how it goes. I'm satisfied with my end results, but I wish I didn't have those patches along with some prickles of hair here and there. read more

I waited until completing three appointments until reviewing to be sure of what I would write. I came to DC from NM summer 2012 and used Yelp to find someone for bikini wax. I was looking specifically for someone who could sugar. I made an appointment and talked to Dawn the first time. I was still new to the area and lost everyday but had no problem getting to the salon (Eastern Market Metro). She introduced herself and asked if I had been waxed or sugared before. I thought it was great that she cared enough to ask. During the session, she offered advice for my ingrown hair problems and other ways to care for my skin post wax session. I waited maybe 2 months before coming back after at home treatment failed miserably (razor). She took a look and told me she could fix me right up. This time it was strip wax. She asked my why I shaved and after telling her about my time constraints, she told me to simply call her and she can see if we can set up an appoint. The third time, I called and she was able to get me in the next day. Strip wax again and I left a happy customer three time in a row. In every session, she relaxed me by talking to me. She is very knowledgeable and really seems to care about me and my skin. I really enjoy the nontraditional spa (R&B, Neo Soul) which also helped create a natural relaxing environment (for me). I have now had 3 experiences with Dawn in 6 months and I would recommend her to anyone. read more

Dawne is THE BEST esthetician. I've been going to her for years and will not let anyone else touch my lady parts or my face. She's skilled and knowledgable, and truly cares about her clients. You know how folks are always trying to sell you a bunch of products. Not Dawne. She knows her clients' lifestyles and encourages you to make the bare minimum changes to improve the health of your skin. I was using soap and lotion on my face. Instead of putting me on a huge regimen with 3-4 products, she gave me a simple face wash and told me to use the same coconut oil that I put on my hair on my face. It's better than lotion, she said. Dawn is just great all around. No one is ever going to call a bikini wax fun, but Dawn makes it as minimally painful as can be done, in my experience. It's also helpful when the person waxing you is friendly and cheerful, instead of someone who makes you tense (very much NOT helpful when getting your bikini line waxed!). I made an appointment with Dawne for a Brazilian Bikini wax , canceled it due to unforeseen circumstances, and then quickly rescheduled for the same day at an earlier time. Even with all that craziness, Dawne was courteous and efficient. Long story short, I'm not a superstitious person, but I was having a day befitting of it being Friday the 13th. I expressed this to Dawne in the beginning of my session. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but we all know waxing doesn't feel good. Like, at ALL. Dawne made it EXTREMELY comfortable--not painless--but comfortable, and she listened to my stressed out babbling the whole time (lol). We also discussed developing a skin care regimen for my ridiculously spaztastic face (never had an issue with acne or marks until I became an adult, but I digress). The location is perfect, and she had just moved from the space next door. I don't know what the old space looked like, but I can tell this one is going to be very nice. I can't wait to see it all come together! At the end of the session, Dawne even gave me a discount to treat myself to something in order to ease some of the stress and tension of the day from hell I was experiencing. Truly a blessing!
