This is why cheapskate me has been having haircuts in dodgy "parlors" here in the South. Well, so I tried getting a 50 peso haircut at another high-end looking salon that came with a bit of "ambience". Well it turned out horrible as the stylist couldn't even cut straight! Well, I obviously got what I paid for, I know! So, naturally I would find someone else who can fix my hair so I stopped by at Nilo's Cut Salon, who offers Php 100 haircuts for a trim with no shampoo (Php 180 with shampoo). Nilo has made a name for himself here in Better Living, and I believe he has a long list of 'suki's' already. I had no idea what the hair cut I wanted was called, so I fished out a photo from Pinterest (Haha!) and showed him a photo of this Parisian girl with a blunt cut. Nilo says "Ah, square bob". Okay, great! Nilo cuts hair effortlessly, and his hands are light and gentle, unlike some stylists whose hands and movements are a bit on the rough side. Nilo works through your hair with a feathery touch. Ten minutes later, my cut is done, and is the correct length I wanted! He also fixed my fringe as well (About my fringe, I only let stylists who I can trust to cut my fringe. Let's just say it's a precaution for ending up with another tragedy called 'baby bangs'). His assistant then proceeds to blow dry my hair after the cut, and after a few minutes, he goes "Para ka nang chandelier" (You look like a chandelier). "Chandelier? Huh...?" Then he says "The music video". If you know me, I am perpetually out of touch with pop music. If you're wondering what my haircut looked like after, search Chandelier by Sia on Youtube and spot the blonde Maddie Ziegler! So, except for the hair, I look nothing like that Parisian girl on the photo I brought, but I am very pleased with Nilo's quick service and expertise.

This branch along Dona Soledad Avenue is one of a few. A friend of mine told me that all things Korean have become the fad now, from their boy and girl bands to telenovelas to fashion. Every now and then, that Gangnam Style song comes back to haunt me. Genesis supposedly employs the latest techniques in hair styling. I have to agree that when the women in my life go there, they come out looking better with the latest hair styles. I'm told that a few men go there to get their hair done. I doubt if I will ever be a client of theirs. Any salon that charges more than P100 is not for this old dude. Fact is, I still prefer a good, old-fashioned barber. If you've been following Juday's hairstyles these days, you would understand this big decision. And moment of hair fandom. That day, at the salon, I sheepishly showed a photo of Juday's so-chic shoulder-length bob to Jing, hoping that the people around me wouldn't think I was Juday's biggest fan (but damn, I sure seemed like that person that day). My "shyness" was overpowered by Jing's "omg I gave her that haircut!!!!" OMG JING GAVE JUDAY THAT HAIRCUT. I was ecstatic, excited and just couldn't wait for him to give me the same haircut already! This friend of mine is a frequent customer of David's Salon, by the way, and if her complexion is the basis, then this place does a very good job. She may be pushing 40 but looks more than a decade younger. She's often been mistaken for a 20-something and has done some modeling work, focusing on her face which has the clearest complexion. I had always thought that David's Salon was nothing more than just another place where ladies and some gents like to get their hair styled. I was wrong. Incidentally, David's is one of the few salons that can afford to advertise in the newspapers and glossy magazines. So business must be booming. Their branch along Dona Soledad Avenue near the corner of Russia has parking space in front, and they never seem to be short of clients.

While the entrance is small, the actual salon is pretty big inside. It is like most of the other Bench Fix branches. I love their hair color because it doesn't hurt when they apply it and it lasts for several months. They also have really beautiful color combinations whether you want to be copper blonde or just get very nice highlights. While pricing for hair color is a bit expensive, it really is worth it. What surprised me about this branch is how good their makeup artists are. I had the chance to try it out one time when my most trusted makeup artist was out of town and I had a quick event to attend. They were so good people barely recognized me -- and I mean that in a good way.

One reason was the bargain price of P39.95 for a simple haircut that came with a free shampoo and blow dry. I don't think Index was losing money since it was almost always filled with clients, both male and female. But there it was, the old Index was gone and in its place was a new salon that calls itself Styles & Smiles. Styles & Smiles was not yet open when I passed by earlier this week. I could hear someone giving a briefing to the staff. Out of sheer curiosity, I peeked inside. Aha! I told myself. A lot of those faces look familiar. I can surmise that the owner of the Index franchise had opted not to renew his or her contract, and decided to come up with his/her own brand of hair salon. A sign outside announced that Styles & Smiles would have its soft opening very soon, perhaps as early as this week. I don't know if the old clients will still go to this new salon, but chances are a large enough number of them will go to the place, be surprised at the change of name, and get their hair done anyway. Three stars for this newest salon on the block.
