Surprised no one has written about David's yet honoured to be the first. David's is not your average hole-in--the-wall chinese joint. It's far more than that. Tea entrepreneur, David Zhou who is also the owner of Oriental Tea House restaurants offers a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience nested in Cecil place just off Melbourne's popular Chapel street. The Chinese cuisine has a cantonese influence and there are many meals to chose from, you wont know where to start. I recommend the buffet banquet and is usually recommend to you by the wait staff if you are having trouble deciding. It delivers dishes such as seafood san choi bao salt and spicy calamari peking duck served with homemade pancake, stir fried fish fillet with snow peas in coriander, light ginger and garlic served with steamed rice. Granted this is lot of food but it is clearly of high quality and flavour at moderate pricing at $49.00 pp. David's truly delivers some of Melbourne's most exquisite asian cuisine which never fails to please even the toughest critics.

If you're in search of a typical China Town Yum Cha, then give Davids Restaurant in Prahran a miss. This is not your run of the mill Chinese restaurant, either in look or taste. From the moment you step through the door you are transported to a fishing village in country Shanghai. With natural light flooding the white washed timber walls and polished cement floors, without even looking at the menu you know you're in for a special meal. We attended the unlimited Yum Cha on Saturday afternoon and was treated to something very special. Trays upon trays of an assortment of freshly steamed dumplings continually made their way to our table and it was hard to say no to any of them. Dumplings wasn't the only dishes that are on offer, a selection of Davids a la carte menu was also making the rounds of each table. There wasn't a dish we didn't like and we started to fill up by this stage. Just when we thought we couldn't eat anymore our server presented to us the highlight of the meal, white chocolate dumplings. These gooey pieces of heaven are any chocolate lover's wet dream, a perfect way to finish a truely delightful lunch. So as I said if you're looking for a Yum Cha that is different than the rest, I suggest you head to Davids in Prahran.

I eat dim sum fairly regularly and thought David's was quite average. We had a large range of dumplings and most were ok but there were none of come back for. The Peking duck pancake was the best by far. They came out hot and fresh, which was a bonus - not all dishes were like this. The decor is funky and the 'share plate' was an interesting concept. I love chilli and despite ordering 2 kinds of chilli neither was hot, I was disappointed.

Very busy and service was a little slow. Food arrived fast once ordered. Priced well and tasted great.

The Peking duck rolls, chocolate sesame balls and white chocolate dumplings had to be the winner!

Delicious yumcha near south yarra station. Everything was great except for the sweet rib, it tasted…read morehorrible, too sweet and meat was too dry. However the rest of the food was excellent. Staff was friendly , the place looks luxurious. Anyway, would come back whenever I want yumcha. We had 3 people and the bill was 120. I tried again another day for dinner, everything was so tasty: pickle fish soup, salted egg prawn, peking duck

4.2. Very impressive. Not perfect but very very good…read more The most important thing. The food here is superb. Probably the best Chinese food I've ever had. We had a party of 9 and had a range of dishes. Every single dish was excellent. In order they were sweet and sour pork ribs, kong pao chicken, kong pao prawns, ma po tofu with beef mince, dry stir fried beans, fish flavoured eggplant and sweet and sour cabbage. Every single dish was fantastic. I loved them all and so did the whole table. If I had to pick a favourite it'd be a curious one. The cabbage was utterly magnificent. Cooked and flavoured so perfectly it was ridiculous. Service was up and down on the night. It was not good at the start. No one attending to us. Single dishes then delivered with significant intervals. No rice either. It made for a chequered and slightly awkward start. It was rectified in time but it shouldn't have happened at a restaurant of this quality. On the upside again, the cost of the meal was very modest at $33 a head. Exceptional value actually. We brought two of our own wines which helped the bottom line. What a great thing to be allowed to do. Overall I loved the place and would return in a heartbeat.

To be honest, I'm really not a fan of Pacific House. Every time it's suggested as an option I…read morecringe and try to talk my way out of going. However, I've eaten here for more work outings than I can count and survived, so I've gotta concede to three stars. For a higher end Chinese place, the menu holds some unusual options, including crocodile and venison. The duck is a recurring favorite as are the chicken wings - perfectly crisp and spicy. The chili crab is worth trying. Avoid anything stir or pan fried as it will be greased to within an inch of your life. The lobster though.... Sigh. This is what really kills me. We can't have a team dinner at Pacific House without one of these monsters. Averaging around $350 for a whole lobster, you might expect the kitchen to take some care in preparing your gold of the sea. Lower your expectations, and plan to be crunching on shell in everything, even the other dishes that you didn't think should come out with lobster in them at all. Sometimes overcooked, sometimes under seasoned, the most expensive item on their menu is the least consistent and worst served. The atmosphere is 1980s casino: cheap chairs with white tablecloths and disinterested table service. The restaurant is consistently crowded and loud, so clearly someone likes this place, but it is never somewhere I would choose to go myself.

We tried this restaurant on NYE due to a 24/7 restaurant we wanted to go to was actually closed…read more.. So much for their motto: We never close! Anyway, back to the restaurant in question. Very busy even at 9pm, and very much Asian orientated with the clientele (not being racist, but this is usually a good sign). Service was a little bit on the average side, however once ordered, the speed of food coming out was great the food tasted even better. From memory, I think it was the Cantonese beef that was to die for. Would highly recommend if you are in the area.
