Words will not be able to fully express how wonderful Dr. Tickel and his practice are. Dr. Tickel…read moreis calming, compassionate and full of knowledge and skill. He can explain each movement and adjustment with detail. He treats you as a person and friend and focuses on your problem areas, including how your lifestyle influences your body and the treatments. I am a big proponent of proper and specialized chiropractic care, which you get from Dr. Tickel. You get immediate and long-term relief. Every treatment and adjustment is specific to your issues and areas of concern at that time and goals for the future. I highly recommend him to anyone who asks and have only ever gotten great feedback from those who follow that recommendation.

I second the first review - it was actually very well said. I also scheduled my appointment via…read moree-mail, and I really appreciated that because I was at work, my back was aching and I didn't have a time for a phone call, but knowing I had that appointment helped me get through the day. I've had intermittent back problems for a few years, and every 3-6 months, I find I need chiropractic work. In Colorado, where I'm from, it's pretty straightforward to find care, but here, I had no idea where to go, or especially who to trust. Dr. Tickel put me at ease immediately. I really appreciated that he explained each maneuver and/or therapy during the session. He was very compassionate, but very knowledgeable at the same time. I'm a scientist, and I like to know that someone knows their stuff. My back was so much better after the first visit, and after the second, was completely back to normal. I appreciated that tremendously - it was the worst it had ever gotten because I didn't know where to find care. I'll be recommending him to anyone who asks. Immediate relief, and I'm back to working in my garden without pain and riding my horse. Looking forward to hiking next weekend too. I'm very grateful - I wasn't sure I could find a really terrific provider on the very first visit.

Bottom line: ob/gyn Edward Wolanski came pretty highly recommended to me, with the one caveat that…read morehe has an unhealthy, critical view of weight gain during pregnancy. It turns out that's true. But it also seems to be true that for other criteria like a low-intervention approach to birth, he's the best ob/gyn in Charlottesville (by default - he seems to be the only low-intervention ob/gyn here!). So, you have to pick your poison. Or maybe enough women telling him we don't like his unnecessarily strict, critical stance could influence the way he relates to patients? One can dare to hope. Context: I moved to Charlottesville about two months ago and began asking for recommendations for a good ob/gyn. Edward Wolanski was a name that kept coming up. Friends and friends-of-friends recommended him because they said he tends to be low intervention - he serves as the back-up for a midwife, which is rare and usually indicates an appreciation for a natural approach to childbirth. The one nuance to all the glowing reviews was that he could be brusque and unnecessarily strict about weight, having once told a patient, "We don't want a chubby Christa!" (Except he used her name, of course.) I took this info with a grain of salt, but sure enough, during our consultation visit, one of the first things Wolanski brought up was his recommendation that pregnant women should only gain 20-25 pounds during a pregnancy: this goes against the medically recognized guideline of 25-35 pounds for women who, like me, are in a healthy weight range at the start of pregnancy. I questioned whether his adapted guidelines set up potentially harmful expectations for women who have struggled with eating disorders, and he actually responded, "I've had many patients who have dealt with anorexia, and they tend to do quite well during pregnancy because they watch what they eat." Uh, yeah, that's what anorexics do, but I think our definition of "doing quite well" are not the same. That's the bad news. The worse news is that Wolanski may still be the best (only??) ob/gyn in Charlottesville for women like me, who value a low-intervention approach to childbirth. In the past week, I've researched ob/gyns in Cville like it's my job, and while Martha Jefferson Hospital is more advanced in terms of holistic care of mama + baby, I have yet to find another ob/gyn practice that is recommended for being accepting of a more natural approach to childbirth. I'll update this if/when I do (and if you have recommendations - message me!!)

I feel as if I have done the "round robin" of area OB/GYNs. I have seen Dr. T, Jefferson OB, and…read moreWolanski. I was looking for a doctor who was willing to let me have a VBA2C. The only person was Wolanski. He is kind and straightforward and is fully committed to your well-being as well as that of your child. He is very into making sure you stay healthy and will encourage you to work out and to be careful about how you are eating during your pregnancy. Highly recommend.

Just a little background - I had been going to a family chiropractor in Mechanicsville for 10+…read moreyears and decided to establish care in Charlottesville after attending college and grad school here. I chose SW because I had a sports medicine background and knew that he had treated a lot of UVA athletes throughout his career. Honestly, Dr. Wagner himself did not give me a good first impression. I emphasized my two degrees in Kinesiology, assuming that I would not be spoken down to, but his overall tone was passively arrogant and abrasive in the majority of interactions I had with him. On most of the days that I have been seen by Dr. W rather than another chiropractor, I have not felt that my visits have been worth the cost in a relative sense, as he seems to only spend 90 seconds in the exam room with me, and his adjustment techniques are quite rough, even for someone who has had chiropractic for most of her life. Dr. Sterling on the other hand, is wonderful. He is polite, patient, and seems to place a great deal of focus on patient-provider relationships and comfort level of the patient, and when he is in the exam room, I generally feel like I am his only patient in that moment (which is how it should be), not on a conveyor belt of other patients waiting. Please note, I am a young adult who receives chiropractic for health maintenance and overall wellness, in addition to optimizing my biomechanics for long-distance running, so for someone who is fighting off an injury or has another clinically significant motive for receiving care, the content of this review might not be relevant, as fulfillment in one's experience may be more based on outcomes of range-of-motion and mobility in those cases. Also, I acknowledge that my care requires less time and intensity of efforts on the provider's end, and that I should not necessarily be prioritized in receiving their attention. I do intend to keep coming to this practice for chiropractic care, but with the expectation that I can be seen by the specific provider I request who meets my needs/preferences the most.
