It would be easy to miss a small winery on dry Creek Road outside of Healdsburg. Don't pass it by it is wonderful. Van was our server and he was very interesting and had a lot of knowledge. We had fun talking with him. The prices of the wines were very reasonable and very very tasty. They had several inns that were amazing. I also liked some of their blended wines. My friend decided to join their wine club because we loved their wines so much and received a 40% off. It had a very cute little place to sit outside to taste. We've been coming here on and off for years. Mostly during events like winter Vineland. They couldn't be more friendly and fun. They offer a nice outdoor sitting area among the trees where you can bring some picnic stuff. But it's mostly, of course, about the wine. They offer several Italian style varietals, which is what we like most about this vineyard. We recently became members. Membership brings their already very reasonable price point down to a crazy good deal. Makes it very affordable to stock up on wine. You can drink any time of year. read more

Loved our tasting experience here. This was our second winery of the day in the Dry Creek valley and the drive itself is worth visiting. Service was amazing, it was engaging and friendly. Wines were delicious and our visit happened to be at a time when there were quite a few wine club members present so got to try quite a few extra pours, some vintage, all of which were delicious. They start with a white blend which was refreshing and specialize in reds. The place is quaint and charming and the outdoor patio space was perfect for a light bite before we made our way back. Ask any of my friends and they'll all tell you that I don't drink. But it doesn't stop me from heading out to beautiful wine country-- whether it be Napa, Healdsburg or in this case Geyserville. We came here specifically for their wine release party since my wino friends ordered a special batch of Dave's Cuvee Blend during their Barrel tasting event they hold each year. The event was free for anyone who had ordered a crate. Once we pulled up, I could smell the delicious barbecue that was being provided and once inside, it most definitely felt like a party. I wasn't expecting to do any wine tasting at all since I don't drink, but surprisingly enough, my friends convinced me to try some of their Block 4 wine. It's a red wine blend and for a novice like me, I liked it. Don't expect me to describe the actual fruits/ scents that you could pick up when sniffing-- But, I will tell you that I usually *hate* any type of red wine. Upon first sip, I usually just want to gag. It was different this time. I sipped and it just felt really smooth going down. No gross aftertaste and while I still couldn't see myself drinking an entire glass, I could see how someone could love this stuff. We had the pleasure of meeting Joshua Price who was one of the pourer's at the event and he happily obliged when our party kept coming back for more tastings. We had to make sure that we picked the right wine to purchase right? We ended up buying another crate of the Block 4 wine because it was just that good. As for the barbecue, it was one delicious meal of lightly glazed chicken along with a quinoa salad that was super tasty as well. No pictures of the meals because I was too busy being in the moment and forgetting about being the good yelper I am. It's all about the Block 4 wine here folks!! It has been a LONG time since I have been here and enjoyed a particular wine. It was their late harvest Gewürztraminer. It was so sweet it hardly came off as wine. Very much a dessert wine. I was on a tour and this place is known for their reds. I did not know this until we were on site. I enjoyed the explanation of their process, Their decision to have the vines they do. The tasting person told me about the one white wine they had. He said it was so delicious you could put it on pancakes- it also said this on the bottle. I never put it on pancakes but I did go back and purchase several bottles to have. I would have essentially the equivalent of a double shot chilled and sip it for a good hour and be set. It was amazing. I got hints of apples, honey and pear. I wish they still bottled this. It was not in the 750mL bottles but the smaller 375mL. Had I known they were going to stop I would've stocked up for years to come. If they made it again, it might be the one that would make me have a small drink once in a while. read more

We were members for a few years several years ago and returned yesterday for a visit with fond memory expectations. Customer service was sub-par and almost left us feeling like more of a bother than anything...and we were the only customers initially. We visited 16 wineries during our visit here and this was the only one that didn't bring our tastings to us. They didn't give any information on the history or wine and were clearly more interested in visiting with each other, honestly. It was sad to see that they've lost their personal touch. read more

This small off the beaten path winery was delightful. Jessie was pouring the wines for tasting and did a engaging description of each wine's characteristics & what would be a good food pairings. Great service. It's a small place and we were there around noon on a Thursday so we're able to sit on the patio and take our time. Jessie even called our next winery tasting down the road to let them know we'd be late. There were 3 wines that I thought were impressive Luminarie (a white blend), the 2019 (old vine) Zinfandel and their Petit Syrah was Outstanding! read more

This is just about the least pretentious winery on earth and I tip my hat to their quirk. So many places are afraid to have an authentic POV. Sometimes you end up tasting (insert your favorite winery tasting room) and you end up in a place with the same decor and personality as the last place. Everywhere are pictures of grape leaves at harvest, warm yellow Under the Tuscan Sun decor, logo-ed polo shirts and caps, special membership backrooms and levels. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Here, at David Coffaro, even if you never meet the winemaker, you have a sense of who you are dealing with. You'll find pictures of Oakland Raider memorabilia, 70s rock posters, uber friendly winery cats, and affordable and tasty red wine and wine futures. This unabashed sense of self shows up everywhere, making this a fun place to taste. I applaud their their willingness to let it all hang out, and not seek to be like everyone else, but instead to be quirky, tasty, and democratic. The wine tasting room reminds me of a place a garage band might practice for gigs. Very good reds by the way, if you are keeping score. read more

I have been coming to Coffaro for over 10 years. I was introduced to them through a wine tour I took on Wine Country Journey Tours. The thing I like about Coffaro winery is that is not pretentious! When tasting were inside, he had a working winery with barrels and presses and all the other stuff that goes into making his wine. He makes very fruit forward red. I dont like alot of tannins and his wines don't have it. You cannot beat the prices especially if you are a wine club member. Their outside seating is very nice- well spaced, usually a breeze and sometimes Pat or Dave may come out to say hi. Jesse and Catalina have been there a long time and know the wines very well. If you are looking for a more formal, uptight approach to wines then this is NOT your place. If you want a laid back approach whether you are alone or group of you can't go wrong!!! read more

Excellent winery with a great personality. The barrel tasting experience is great. The lobster bisque was very good. The wine selection made it all worth the trip and the picnic area really took things to a new place. It is a great combination of great wine combinations, good attitude and a touch of europe chick charm. Unlike other wineries they have great concerts playing on their big screen but they are done right and give the barrel experience some dynamic feel but not make it cheap or uncomfortable. read more

At that moment, we fell in love with wine on their black leather couch. We found this winery by chance and can honestly say it changed us. If you read the book "Love by the Glass" by Dorothy Gaiter & John Brecher, David Coffaro Wines are to us what Tattinger is to them. Their wines have been with us for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and A LOT of Friday night dinners. Affordably priced, their reds punch a lot of flavor. Tried this unassuming little winery after hitting a very fancy one down the street. I could not have been happier with the service or the product. As a result, I joined Dave's Wine Club and have semi-annual shipments to my home in Atlanta. In between, they have sales and I always get great deals on other wines. When I email Dave or Pat to ask about certain sales or specials, they always reply promptly and honestly. After a few friends tasted their wine at dinner parties, they became members of Dave's Wine Club and one said to me, "After you drink Caffaro wine, it's hard to drink anything else." This was our second stop on our wine tour. This winery is very unpretentious and a good stop for any Raiders fan as obviously the owners are fans themselves with the variety of memorabilia and newpaper clippings they have displayed on the walls. The wines here are bold and strong, perhaps a little too strong for me. Both my husband and I found them to be overpowering. Others on our tour group were very happy with the wines and one couple signed up for thier wine club. To each their own, I guess. We did end up purchasing one bottle of the Carignane as it is not a varietal that we are very familiar with and was one that we liked the best. We felt it would be a good conversation starter wine with other friends who know wine. We will wait and pull it out and see how many of our friends are familiar with it. The Winery is very casual and laid back. They had a sign on the wall that said "We don't need no stinkin' corks" in reference to the fact that many of their wines are of the screw top variety. They also have a video game system set up in the back and it is said that they will play when things are slow. Definitely a low-key atmosphere. read more

If you are up in the Dry Creek area and love rich, red blends at excellent values then this is the place to stop. If you don't mind paying money for something you won't see for another few months or even a year, then you definitely have to stop to check out their futures. The place- in addition to their wine- has character! We were their the barrel tasting weekend (possibly the most annoying time in Healdsburg if you don't have a limo rented and are on a mission to taste (and forget) as many wines as possible)- and it was a surprising gem. We were able to taste 10 of their 2008s straight from the barrel and buy at $17 a bottle (1 case minimum) instead of paying $28 once its bottled. The Estate Cuvee, Terre Melange, Escuro and Block 4 were all fantastic wines- also notable is the Carignan (100%!!!- where else will you find that??) The staff made the tasting all the more enjoyable- Dave Coffaro (aka "The Master Blender") has a passion for little known (to these parts anyhow) varietals (Tannat, Lagrein, Algiaico) and knows how to bring out the best in them. The younger generation is represented by Matt (brewmaster on the side) who will cheerfully entertain you as you taste. They only lost a star due to their avid fan Raiders shrine... :) read more

I love Dry Creek valley, lived in Santa Rosa for years and had enjoyed years of case purchases from David Coffaro. The low rating is for David Coffaro's peronal response and poor customer service after a health problem with his wine on one occasion. After buying a case, we enjoyed the first two bottles but upon opening the third bottle for a great dinner I poured my gf the first glass and a huge horse fly came out. I wrote a letter to David and included the fly by snail mail. He responded by writing on my letter and mailing it back to me; it was shocking, rude, and accusatory. He wouldn't accept it could happen and had no care to resolve our dilemma over a completely undrinkable wine. I was put back. Usually winemakers are VERY concerned with the drinking experience. Not here. I enjoyed buying cases of David Coffaro for many years, attended the big screen parties (lots of flies) but can not recommend them anymore as David's sad response when health problems arise. When I speak with friends of wineries in Dry Creek this memory usually comes up. read more

So does it rain here? Never. Well, that's what they told me on a gorgeous day when I discovered them on my househunting trip 2 years ago. Skip the pretention and head up to Russian River for real family-owned wineries and forget about paying to taste. David Coffaro's operation is laid back and fun (think the Boss blasting out of premium speakers on a huge projection screen in a large tasting room lined with barrels of tasty frankenwine - is that a picture of the Beatles with Mohammad Ali? hell yeah it is!). The staff is attentive and friendly. Their current apprentice Matt, will even provide free winery tours if you call ahead and arrive early. Prices are very reasonable and the futures are a terrific deal. Hope you don't mind screwcaps because there are no corks here. We stumbled upon David Coffaro's winery in 2004 when visiting my cousin in Sonoma. She and her boyfriend took us on a tour through 3-4 wineries. Coffaro wasn't on the list - we found it by turning into the driveway. A fortuitous discovery. There were 4 of us and another couple. It was mid-June. We had visited a good, an ok, and a fantastic winery. The fantastic paled in comparison to Coffaro's. We enjoyed the standard 4 tastes. David then asked if anyone was interested in what else he had going on, and we all said yes! We stepped into the area with all the barrels. About 10 tastes later (no, I'm not exaggerating), we toddled out the door with our treasures, and found a place to enjoy our afternoon picnic. We've since visited another time, and placed a deposit on the futures. Two cases of wine - mostly Zins and a few others - really great. Our next adventure is beckoning soon... read more

Do not go here. If I could give less than one star I Not only is the wine terrible, but the owner is a complete jerk. We came in on a Saturday afternoon, and my stepmom had her medical service dog with her, who is ADA trained and certified and was wearing his vest. We were making our way through the tasting, and the dog was calmly sitting at our feet, when David Coffaro stormed in and demanded to know whether it was a service dog. Upon hearing that he was indeed a trained service dog, David began to loudly berate my stepmom for bringing in an animal and demanded that we all wash our hands every time we touch the dog. We said we'd be happy to do so, but he continued to make a scene and demanded that we leave, which is actually against the law, a fact that my stepmom reminded him of. At that point David told the girl pouring for us to stop serving my stepmom. We ended up leaving but whole thing was extremely uncomfortable, unprofessional, and unnecessary. Please do not support this mean, prejudiced man. There are so many other wonderful wineries in the Healdsburg area; literally any of them would be a better place to visit. Edited to respond to David Coffaro's comment: David Coffaro Winery this was beyond a negative experience, and it was absolutely not a misunderstanding. Being aware of ADA laws and actually adhering to them are two different things. Your staff was not the issue here, but Mr Coffaro specifically singled out my stepmother for no reason other than the fact that she brought in a service animal. While I understand that many people are feeling stressed about the coronavirus, it is NOT being spread by dogs, and to claim otherwise is blatant ignorance. I have never seen someone with a service animal treated in such a horrible manner. We are Healdsburg locals. You can be sure that we will never be returning to your establishment and will instead continue to visit businesses in the area who have consistently fostered positive experiences and relationships, and who actually follow ADA guidelines. read more

This winery was a lovely gem we stumbled upon on a recommendation from Bill from Frick Winery (see my other review on that...). It was very unlike many wineries i've visited--it was harvest time so the bins of grapes were in the tasting room area so that was cool to see the process--It was fun mainly because I am used to seeing the finished product, not the in between stages. Also there is a huge screen in that at the time was showing a college football game, also not very winery-esque but so very cool. I also appreciated the sports memorabilia in the tasting area. The people were super nice and knowledgable and we got to try a variety of wines, many of which I enjoyed. Since I was trying to pace my purchasing I didn't buy anything here, but could easily come back to this winery and visit again. All and all, good times had by all. read more

This place was by far the best winery I visited on my tasting trip. I had some friends come into town and they were all about doing some wine tasting. We went to Napa, Sonoma, and the Dry Creek Valley in search of great wines. I will never go to Napa Again. It is just so impersonal. Sonoma was ok, but the true gems are out in Dry Creek. The crown jewel, David Coffaro Winery. The wines were OUTSTANDING!!! Not only were the wines delicious, but the prices were well below what we experienced at other wineries in the area. The tasting experience was awesome. No frills, just a tasting room among many barrels holding the most amazing wine. Jesse, the tasting room attendant, was really knowledgeable and full of personality. We loved hearing his suggestions for foods to pair with the wines. There was a lot of sports memorabilia on the walls, great music, and an intoxicating scent of sweet oak. Febreze should come here and find a way to copy the scent. They had the best Zinfandel I have ever tasted. They also had some outrageous blends containing some grapes I have never heard of. The blends were just awesome. I went in for a $5 tasting and left with 4 bottles of amazing wine for under $100. You must try this place!!! read more

This is a great down-to-earth, family owned winery that really does things right. When we came we were the only ones in the tasting room and noticed they had a huge pull down projector and were watching the football game! Like your usual homey Sonoma vineyard, David Coffaro Winery has the cute token cat sitting outside to greet you. The wines here were very good and both of us really enjoyed them. They charge a $5 tasting fee, which is definitely worth it to try some of their nice blends as well as the Zin, Cab, and Petite Sirah. We actually really enjoyed all of the wines that we tried and considering purchasing two bottles. However, the two days had already led to nearly two cases of wine and we truly just didn't need anymore as our collection is already HUGE. As in we don't have enough room on our wine rack HUGE :) I would definitely come back here again for another tasting and to pick up a few bottles of wine the next time I am in Sonoma. read more

He makes some very interesting blends using some rare & obscure European varietals. I particularly liked his 2005 "Fresco". They had some nice everyday wines... ended up buying a couple bottles of Escura - a rich red. But was a little annoyed with the whole tasting experience. David came in at one point while Matt (our pourer) left to get a case for a customer. He was going on and on about how delicious the 2007 wines that were just released were and how much he was enjoying them. When we asked to taste some, he referred us back to Matt. So when Matt returned, we asked, and he said we could only taste 2004...period. Matt explained that they had clearance prices on the 2004 to make room for the new release, so really were pushing these. On the one hand, that allowed us to pick up a case at some unbelievable prices... but on the other, if the 2007 were so much better, why was I buying and tasting 2004??? Left me annoyed with the place as a whole. read more

If you are looking for a small family run operation that make some good, inexpensive wines this is the stop. The reason we went was it was small and they sold futures which sounded interesting. When we got there we were greeting by Jose Flores. Jose was a little shy at first as he was a little tentative when our tasting started but once we started asking questions he was full of information and very knowledgeable. The wines are amazingly good for the price (given that many wineries are pricing themselves our of our pocketbook range). The wines were full of flavor and bold reds (like we like). What do you get when you mix a stark barrel aging facility, a wine bar, a non-pretentious oenophile, a small Oakland Raiders shrine, and a massive A-V system plus a couple of acres of vines of unusual to exotic vines. At this place, Cinsault is considered as commonplace as Chardonnay. Honestly, Davis PhDs and Master Sommeliers excepted, who has heard of Pelousin? We had a lot of fun. David was not there when we arrived, but showed up soon after. When I asked how they produced relatively clear wines without fining or filtering, he pulled out the equipment he uses for racking and explained in detail. This led to an interesting discussion of tartrates and cold stabilization. I imagine David as a Randal Grahm of Dry Creek - less popular varietals, avant guard, old world (field blends, etc.) technique. The visit was worth the price of admission even if they charged. read more
