If I could give more than five stars, I would--because Dave's Tree Service didn't just remove my trees, they performed a full-blown front yard exorcism. I had sixteen very tall, very ugly locust trees standing in my front yard like a lineup of leafy trolls, blocking the light and branches falling on my house every time the wind blows. I called Dave, hoping for a consultation sometime in the next week. He showed up within half an hour. I hadn't even finished my coffee. A few mornings later, I woke up to what can only be described as an elite squad of tree ninjas pulling up with cranes, chippers, trucks, and the kind of quiet confidence that says "We've got this." Every single person on Dave's team was professional, respectful, and weirdly cheerful for people about to take down a small forest. Some went up in cranes like it was nothing, snipping off those hideous branches with precision. Others fed whole trees into the chipper like it was lunchtime. They ground down the stumps, hauled off truckloads of sawdust, and one young man stayed behind to sweep up the driveway and the street like it was opening night on Broadway. With all of the signs for Dave's around Dutchess County, I assumed that they would want more business but that doesn't seem to be the case. Chad returned my phone call several weeks ago and didn't seem interested in my business. I felt like I was trying to sell him rather than the other way around. Needless to say, he didn't show or call on the day of our appointment last week so it seems as if his time was more valuable than mine. Dave's crew carefully took down a tree adjacent to the power lines to the house and did it without any mishaps. The crew also took care of removing three large old stumps and cleaned up everything on the lawn. I am not a happy customer. I spent $6000 to remove trees and they did not complete the job as agreed upon. There were many trees that needed to be cut down. Some were huge. I agreed to leave one of the big trunks on the property behind my house if they could move it out of the way. They even confirmed by pointing to where I suggested and confirmed to move it a few feet near where another fallen trunk was. Instead, they left it where it fell. They also left a huge pile of branches next to the trunk in a pile which should have been chipped. They left a mess. It was already dark and they were rushing to finish the job. I went over to one of the crew and said there were branches behind my house that needed to be removed or chipped. He said everything was underneath the trunk and they were leaving. They also drove their huge crane truck through the middle of my bulb garden and destroyed it. The branches were NOT under the trunk, in fact, in high winds one of the larger branches flew from the pile to where the septic was. The work was done at the end of the year when we were hit with several snow storms. The ground was frozen. Not much could be done so I waited until spring to call. I knew it was too late to move the huge trunk without a crane, so I have to live with that, but I asked that they at least remove the branches as we agreed upon. I called and left a message. I got No Response. On the 3rd call, I left an angry message and they finally called me back. They were argumentative and said I had agreed to leave everything behind the house. I did agree to leave the trunk if it was moved out of the way but that was it. The crew chief said he'd come by and take a look and that he was available every day that week. I never heard from him again. No response to calls. No response to Texts. Infuriating after spending$6,000. IF you do use this service you better get everything in writing. What is to be cut, removed, left and most important where it is left. There are too many other great companies around. I should have gone with Limber a more reputable company. They were slightly more expensive but it would have been worth it not to deal with this company. read more

Recently I had a huge branch of a Scotch Pine tree fall on my house and I called Dave's Tree Service about the emergency and he responded back to me within 5 minutes of my call and was at my house in a half hour. He assessed the situation with me and needed to get the weight off my roof so it did not cause any further damage. It became to dark out to work and came back the next day to take care of the problem. Professional and courteous staff took care of the problem for us. We had some trees hanging over our house and fences pushing them down. We called and they came quickly to fix the problem. They cut down the trees and the limbs on some that would eventually do the same thing as the other trees. The gentleman and his crew were friendly and were efficient. Called Dave's Tree Service to give me an estimate to cut and clear a dead tree that fell at a 45* angle in a small wooded area of my yard in addition to removing 6-7 large limbs hanging over a small shed and opening up a portion of the yard where some maples were providing too much shade for grass to grow. While not an emergency, I received a return call within an hour, the estimate two days later and we scheduled the work several days after that. Don't hire him! Dave arrange to cut a line of trees on our property for X amount of money but the day he came to do the job he wasn't happy with the business decision he had made. He agreed to cut all the trees, take all the mulch to the back of the property and all the trunks to be taken out of the property. He did not do that. the place was left a dirty mess and he left on purpose 3 giant tree trunks on the back of our property that will cost several thousand dollars to be disposed of. His unhappiness became passive aggressive. Run away from this guy. read more

Dave is, indeed, rude. We have a tree emergency and called Dave's in Kingston on Friday, June 28th. The answering machine says they respond to emergencies and that, "...we won't leave you out on a limb!" But that's what they did. We drove to the Kingston location the following Monday, but there was no one there. So I called the Poughkeepsie location and left another message, asking why we had, indeed, been left out on a limb regarding our emergency. Dave called back and responded angrily, saying, "my mother in law just died and her funeral is more important than your lousy junipers, don't you think?" I recently hired Dave's Tree Service to help with a dying tree issue looming over my home. Following my initial call, Dave came out and inspected the tree to see if it could be saved. Sadly the base was badly rotted and he advised to have whole tree taken down. We met and looked over the site. He explained to me what my options were, what they entailed and the cost differences between them. We came to a solution and he added me to the work schedule. He gave me an estimated time-frame for when he could get to the job and informed me he would call a few days before arriving. He explained that due to high demand and prior commitments that they were doing their best to meet everyone's needs. Dave gave me a call on a Friday and let me know that they would be on site the following Wednesday. That morning they arrived promptly and began to work. Dave and his crew were friendly, courteous and professional. They worked quickly and removed the gigantic dying tree from above my home and a few smaller trees in about half a day. I hesitated to hire Dave's Tree Service because it only had one review on Yelp, and a very angry, negative one at that. But after contacting two other companies to get a quote on removing a very large street tree in front of our house at the corner of a very busy intersection and getting no results (one never returned one of the three calls I made to them and the other came and discussed the job, but never called me back or e-mailed me their quote). I called Dave's after learning that the city DPW had used him for years. He came and emailed me a quote I thought reasonable, and for less than another fellow months ago charged me for trimming a few limbs. Four men showed up when he said they would and had the tree down, chipped up, and the stump ground out in less than an hour and a half. Since they were here I had them trim a few limbs for me and was charged less than half of what the other tree guy who had done the trimming earlier. They even took out a few dead limbs I hadn't noticed for no extra charge. To say I was thrilled is putting it mildly. And my wife was impressed on how well they cleaned up the street and sidewalks. read more

I have used Dave's service in the past and been generally pleased with the work, but my family had a poor experience with them today, and he wasn't even working for us. While contracted to work by my neighbor his crew drove their truck on my property without permission -- we were never approached -- severely damaging our lawn, digging deep ruts over a recently installed well, taking down a clothesline not replacing it, and working with their extremely loud machines until after 8:30 on Friday night, blowing dust into the area we were cooking dinner outside. When we called Dave to complain his response was that he'll "make it better than ever". I have little confidence that he will and that's beside the point of his violating my property. It's like a surgeon leaving a big scar on the wrong patient -- that surgeon would get sued and lose his license. Coming home to find the mess in my backyard, I should have called the police for their trespassing. read more
