I'd seen so many photos of the hip fitout that I had my assumptions about the menu, and those assumptions were way off. What St Albi is, secretly, but far more accessibly for the locals, is a gastropub. The menu is tried and true pub style, fancied up around the edges. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, and once my dining pal and I had gotten our heads around this, our meals were awesome. I'd go so far as to say my steak was the best steak I've had in Hobart. Yep, I'm gonna make that call. But having said that, I didn't head to St Albi that night expecting to eat a steak. My friend and I started with an entree and a half each, because we both needed to try the chowder but also another thing each. The chowder was out of this world delicious, and I'm pretty sure it had some sage in it (or just the right combination of other herbs and spices that tricked me into thinking it was sage), but I've been back since just for the chowder and it didn't have quite that same flavour to it. I was a little disappointed, but the chowder is still super, super delicious and comes with an enormous prawn hanging out in it (entertaining but awkward to eat, nobody look at me please). I won mains hands down with my steak, which I forced my friend to try as well (ok I didn't have to force her very hard). I chose the Cox coffee rub for it because I was intrigued. I chose medium rare because that's how steak should be cooked. And I chose some duck fat potatoes and honey brown mushrooms for sides because I couldn't not. Seriously, so good. But so much food. Because this is a gastropub, not a fine dining restaurant. If someone had explained this to me before I went, maybe I wouldn't have had 1.5 entrees before my enormous main, leaving less than zero room for my dessert (yes, even my dessert stomach abandoned me) and giving me actual pains because I was so full (and yet still got most of my sides to take away and devour the following day with some scrambled eggs because I'm a genius). I want to like them, but they taste a little too much like cardboard for me to be able to embrace them. Plus I made the mistake of taking some away with the other half of my sandwich and cold waffle fries are super unpleasant (but so are all cold fries, right? Blech). STILL, the sandwiches are good enough for a return visit, and the service is really sweet and cheerful! Plus last time I was in, the cook poked his head out of the kitchen for a chat with another guest and holy dooley, if that wasn't a legitimate accent from the US of A he was sporting then my ears are out of whack. Don't mess with Texas, man. Get stuck into this menu. Open for lunch Tuesday to Saturday, dinner Thursday to Saturday, and breakfast on Fridays and Saturdays. My first RG experience was with a girlfriend who is a big fan. We were there on a Saturday night, so it was very busy and the place was booked out. We'd called up only a day or so early and had a late booking (for 8pm), but called that night to say "hey guys, if you have any earlier cancellations, feel free to give us a call because we're literally around the corner". Perhaps this was a bit of an alien notion to them because they came back defensively regarding being busy and reserved tables and so on... it's ok guys. It's ok. Having said that, they then called back fifteen minutes later to say we could come in an hour earlier. Ok... good. Onto the food. She got an eye fillet which was on the rare side of medium. I got a scotch which was on the medium side of medium rare. Different cuts, different cooking times, sure. A lot of steaks at a lot of places come out less than perfect. But at a steak restaurant, you can't help but hope they'll have it pretty bang on. Never mind, the steak was still tasty (and the champ potato mash was crazy good). The apple fritters for dessert blew our minds. An evened-out OK experience. My second RG experience was just last night: a Monday night, with a visiting friend from interstate. For the food: her pork ribs were falling off the bone--they looked delicious. My sliders were tasty, but messy--the bottoms of both buns disintegrated as I picked them up. The chips were top notch. We got apple fritters to share and the apple centres were undercooked and disappointing compared to the first time I'd tried them. Actually, having written all this out, I'm dropping my original three stars to two. I can't say it was OK--I've clearly been disappointed. Highs and lows to be had here! I'm sure being seated in the front dining room or upstairs would have made last night's atmosphere better. Having said all that, I'd like to try another steak here one day, and hopefully add another star or two.

It's rare that I get a real craving for Chinese. I think the last time I ate it was in yum cha form a few years ago, and prior to that it was likely at my mum's place out in the country where Chinese is about the only "nice" takeaway food you can get. But for some reason a few weeks ago I was exhausted and desperate for some sweet and sour pork. I remembered a colleague giving a good review for Old Peking in passing, and so I crossed my fingers and ordered the classics: the pork I was craving, chicken with cashew nuts, and special fried rice. The service was quick and friendly and a bag of prawn crackers was thrown in as thanks. I got home, doled a bit of everything into a big ol' bowl, and proceded to EAT SOME OF THE BEST CHINESE I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE. The rice was fine--it had all the bits in it to make it special and even had some sauce drizzled on top--but the meat dishes were where it was at. Fresh vegetables just past crunch factor, delicious meat, and just enough sauce (nothing was swimming therefore nothing was soggy, but enough for the rice to soak up a bit of the flavour). Honestly, the vegies were the highlight for me. I hunted the last bits of carrots and broccoli from the chicken dish, I wept when the onion was finished in the pork dish. I've been back twice since. I'll be back twice as often before the year's out. I'm hooked! Plus the food is always ready SO QUICKLY (10-15mins), the staff are lovely, and the takeaway boxes come with hand-drawn smiley faces on them to accompany the descriptions.
