Stopped in on Monday to schedule a time to replace a power steering pump. Spoke with Brian, and as…read morewe talked, I mentioned that I would like them to check my wheel bearings, and as long as I was at it, would they also check my air conditioning. We talked about how the A/C had gradually stopped working . He said that a diagnostic test and check with fill of A/C would be around $ 200. He told me they would replace the power steering pump and check the wheel bearings. He said that the power steering pump would be around $ 420 total.... The wheel bearings would be expensive because they had to do a bunch of work and they are press on bearings. He said they would check them first before tearing into them. I made the appointment for Wednesday....because I had their assurance that the power steering pump would be there and the installation and the other work would be completed that day. I dropped the vehicle off on Tuesday afternoon, gave the keys to Gary. Wednesday afternoon, Gary called to tell me that "good news"...the wheel bearing all seemed good and made no odd noises so they did not have to be replaced. He then told me that there was a problem with the delivery of the power steering pump and they would not be able to finish the job on Wednesday. I then had to rearrange my schedule... I understand that sometimes things happen. Thursday, they called and said that my truck was finished and i could pick it up. I arrived at 4ish....they said everything was all set. I paid the bill....$ 667 which is what I expected for the pump and the A/C service. I left their garage and drove all the way to Twin Lake and got nothing but hot air blowing on me. I turned around, went back to see them and asked how long I had to wait until the A/C started blowing cold air. Brian, the original conversation guy, said he didn't remember talking about the A/C. I then looked at the bill and the only thing they charged me for was the power steering pump and didn't even check the A/C. So...they only missed the estimate for the pump by about $ 250 and didn't fix the A/C at all. On the plus side, they did check the wheel bearings and were honest about their condition. However....making me wait an extra day because they didn't order the part when I made the appointment, and overcharging (in my opinion) for the power steering pump left a bad taste in my mouth. They had 1 chance to leave a good first impression and they didn't. They dropped the ball and I won't be back, nor will I recommend them to anyone else.

We dropped the truck off and went to lunch. They called shortly after explaining the transfer case low range wasn't operative before doing any work. I was in the auto service business for almost 40 years. One of my biggest pet peeve was a mechanic not test driving the vehicle before and after the repairs or service- even if it's just an oil change. It's an obligation I take seriously for not only superior customer service but also to know if a problem exists before working on it. Dan advised him that it's likely a servo and that the transfer case was overfilled due to the transmission rear seal failing causing the transmission fluid to flow into the transfer case, and gave an estimate for the repair. Everything went extremely well, done before it was promised and slightly under estimate. What really blew my friends mind was how the owner contacted him while he car was in the shop and again after the repairs were done and he'd had a chance to put some miles on it. This is a standard, even basic procedure, yet very few shops do it. I've always preached to meet your customers expectations is a recipe for failure, you must exceed their expectations on every single visit if you want to retain your lifeblood, your customers. City Auto Repair is among the best shops I've ever worked in or consulted for! They've also added some equipment for mounting and balancing tires along with a very high tech alignment machine. Now I don't have to worry about some goon at a tire store warping my rotors or screwing something else up because I can get it done at City Auto Repair! -end of updated review- City auto repair is one of those long time family businesses that have stayed around because of their commitment to superior customer service, acute awareness in delivering value and doing the right thing when things don't go as planned. Being a long time veteran of the industry I believe I can offer some insight as to why City Auto should be a first choice for automotive repair and maintenance. If you're happy with the shop you do business with, by all means, stick with them! I've always advised people that you judge how good or bad a shop is is by how things go when a mistake is made. It's not if, it's when. We're a all human and thus we all screw up occasionally. City auto offers value in many ways, they have maintenance programs with free warranties if you service your vehicle according to schedules and their warranties on repair services are twice as long as the independent shops typically offer. The rates are extremely competitive especially considering how experienced the techs, advisors and the owner are. It also says a lot when a shop retains technicians as long as City does! I go to them for virtually everything and recommend them to everyone. Recently, I made the mistake of taking my car elsewhere to get new tires because of a special that was being run on tires and a warranty I had on my tires with this other place (purchased a couple of years ago before I discovered Newberry Imports). Well, these other mechanics messed up my alignment!! I called to tell said mechanic that they messed up my alignment, they apologized and acknowledged their error and then, I swear I am not making this up, the mechanic/manager of the shop actually recommended that I go to Newberry Imports. As always, Newberry Imports got the alignment done, fixed my car with no issues, and the price as well as customer service was great. My alignment is perfect now. My car is an Acura from 2002 and is now at more than 240,000 miles, yet it runs like new thanks to the great mechanics at Newberry Imports.

At that point, I decided not to proceed with the repairs at this shop.. Later, on my way to a dealership for a second opinion, I discovered that the shop's technician had broken my wheel lock key - likely while tightening the lugs nuts back on after I declined the service. They never told me this happened. I lost an entire work day fixing the mess and getting my car repaired. This experience felt dishonest and retaliatory. I urge my fellow Gators to avoid this shop.
