This review is specifically for the one time I got to eat here. It is an institution among attendees of Night of the Prog Festival at the nearby Loreley Freilichtbühne and stays open after hours to accommodate after-parties, and offers its own special to attendees. I made it a point to come here at least once while attending the festival, even with the tight schedule getting to the venue on time on any day but Friday. I had not had a real schnitzel yet and ordered a basic schnitzel to test the quality of the recipe, and the pork cutlet was very well-fried and could only really be improved by being slightly more moist. And perhaps as a Jägerschnitzel, though I dislike common button mushrooms enough not to want to order that instead despite the tasty sauce that comes with it. The fries are perfectly adequate and quite large in portions, and this meal added up to just 9 euros, before a König Pilsener that only added another 4 euro.
On one side of the service here, the staff have been friendly to festival goers as listed above, since one owner is the cousin of a local and regular attendee, and were honest with me about what I should order in order to still get to the festival on time. Also, as one of the few restaurants in town with power outlets, they were kind enough to let me plug in while eating, extra power which by the end of the day proved indispensable in getting me home after hours.
On the other side, I arrived here on Sunday at 10:55 looking to eat quickly, knowing the shows would start at 12:15, and was told (in much less competent English than on Friday) that the owner was outside and wouldn't be serving food until 12:00. This was obviously not the case on Friday, and from a business perspective to close the kitchen until 15 minutes before showtime won't earn the establishment any food checks from NOTPF attendees that Sunday! So I didn't even bother to stay for a beer and went ahead with the rest of the walk for the day, though still wishing I could try more of the evidently tasty food here.
Maybe if there's a next time I'm here. Time will tell. read more
