German historic "Kaffeekultur" on the Münzplatz…read more During a stroll through Koblenz I had the chance to invite my brother to a typical "second" breakfast and also give him the chance to experience German Kaffeekultur before lunch: a mix of young people in between classes or on a break from the office, housewives in between shopping stops, pensioners enjoying a leisurely late breakfast while reading the newspaper - on paper attached to long rods ostensibly so that guests don't take the paper with them. Our mix of cold cuts, eggs, fresh juice, and Flammkuchen (my non-typical choice of tarte flambée for breakfast) were fine just like the freshly made cappuccino, all served in a light airy café atmosphere with marble tables and high ceiling. It was too chilly to sit outside on the gray cool January Monday, but it was nice for me to compare the dining area with what I could remember from years before when the food was Chinese and the interior design was very different. As I learned from the Café's own website, there was a café named Kaffeewirtschaft on the same spot a century earlier, so my spontaneous invitation for my brother to try German Kaffeekultur was actually historically accurate. Although comparing the café to paradise (the street location is Paradies 1), as the cute and informative menu does, might be a bit exaggerated, we enjoyed our hour there.

Delicious Buffet breakfast that's very reasonably priced…read more I don't know what it is about this town or Germany generally, but finding a place for breakfast that's open and not a bakery in this town can be a challenge. My girlfriend and I were fortunate enough to stumble upon this place. Walking inside, it was completely empty, with only the cook setting up for the breakfast buffet. After standing around awkwardly for a few minutes we sat down and waited. For the next 15 minutes we sat there watching the cook bring out food (bear in mind the restaurant had been open for a half hour). Finally, the cook ran outside and brought back the hostess, who was finally able to take our drink orders and tell us about the buffet. I guess they aren't use to early risers frequenting their restaurant. When we made it to the buffet, we were treated to a very expansive and delicious buffet. As you probably already now, breakfast in Europe is not eggs and bacon - we were able to sample fine cheeses, jams, breads, and various meats. The bill for two people ended up coming to about 20 euros. I didn't get a chance to sample the Cafe part, but the Breakfast bit was really good. Except for the snafu at the beginning (again, it's Europe) I walked out very satisfied.

Yesterday, old friends took us for breakfast - and I hate to say it, but it was less than average, and the service was not only inattentive, but the execution was awful - and any product that did not come from the bakery was less than average. The salami and turkey was ... cheap. The four of us hated it. Then, it took three attempts to get a soft boiled egg - and it arrived 30 mins after breakfast. Once the service had cleaned our plates, it just disappeared. We sat there for another hour - as you do in Germany - and they did not even ask if we cared for anything else. I would understand if the place was packed - but at this particular time, two-thirds of the tables were vacant. They did not even bother to bring the check - we had to find someone to pay. Sorry, as much as I love your place, if I had to pick a place where to go today, I'd rather risk checking out any new place than going again.
