We were in the Rhine River Valley in Sankt Goar near Rhinefels Castle (a wonderful spot to visit if you are in the area!), and we were hungry for lunch. Restaurant Zur Loreley had a great looking menu with authentic German food and great reviews to go along with it, so we decided to check it out for lunch. Like many (most?) restaurants in Germany, they have a single brewery they are linked with, so I got the pils on draft (sadly the name currently escapes me). It was very light but had a great flavor, and it served to remind me yet again how fabulous German beers are. I decided to start with a soup, and the tomato cream soup sounded wonderful. It was indeed wonderful--thick, creamy, with a nice robust flavor. It was the perfect start to the meal. I should also mention that the menus were available both in German and in English, which helped quite a bit since I don't speak German. We ordered 2 entrees for lunch. My coworker ordered a schnitzel which came covered with mushrooms and accompanied with pan fried potatoes. I decided that I was pretty hungry so ordered a 3 filet sampler that included 2 pork loin filets and a beef loin filet, served with mushrooms, pan fried potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and other veggies. The schnitzel had a great flavor, with a light fried batter outside and very tender, moist meat on the inside. It tasted amazing with the mushrooms, which were perfectly tender. The potatoes were also quite nice, with just the right texture and crisp. The 3 filets were prepared very well, again being tender and juicy and satisfying the taste buds. The mushrooms and potatoes were identical to the ones that came with the other dish, but they were equally yummy. The vegetables were also good and made for a well-rounded meal. The restaurant is attached to a hotel and was very quaint and homey inside. The service was very friendly and accommodating, particularly for 2 Americans who don't speak German. Not only was the food delicious, but the portions were quite large. They do offer smaller versions of plates if you are not so hungry, and we could see why given that we were unable to finish our food. The prices were also quite reasonable. Hotel restaurants are generally stereotyped (at least in the US) as being mediocre, but this certainly did not apply to Restaurant Zur Loreley. If you are visiting Rheinfels Castle (or just happen to be in the area), you should definitely stop by, as you will not be disappointed.

Inspite of bad service we had a very good meal. The kids ate the potato pancakes with apple sauce and loved it. The schnitzel and potatoes were very well prepared as was the mixed meat plate. The special meat was flat our bad. I tried it based on another yelp review but it was very chewy and lacked flavor.

This was one of the only hotel booking.com had available on the "Romatic Rhein" so I took it for $60/night-single, breakfast included with all the European delights. The offer free parking but is out of the main town directly across from a camping site which takes the view away from the hotel a bit. Can walk into the main town which is really charming with a great Italian restaurant, Alla Fontana. High recommend. Here the twist. The train goes by every 20 min. All night and is super loud as the hotel abuts the tracks. I slept mostly they it so make sure you are super tired before booking here. There are a lot of other options up and down this part of the Rhein, suggest trying those first. Free bike provided for the day and also free wifi although a bit unreliable. I do recommend this place just beware of my review. Prost!

It overlooks the Rhine River, more specifically the Loreley rock. Our tour guide told us this area is haunted. The rock is named Loreley after the girl who committed suicide in the Rhine River over her faithless lover. When she died, she was transformed into a siren and her singing was often heard around the rocks. This hypnotic music lured sailors to their death. Not sure how much of this is true but is a pretty cool legend. Our group started with some beer and wine. My wife and I got Bitburger Beer in both regular and dark. Man, these were great. I don't even like beer, especially dark ones, but this was rich and smooth without the bitter aftertaste. I have to try to find a store or restaurant that serves these in the US. As for the dish, we all got the Ofenfrische gegrillte Schweinschaxe mit Weinkraut (pork knuckle with sour white cabbage). This thing was huge. It's a lot bigger than it looks in the picture. The pork was very tender and the sauce it came with was pretty good. It's still a bit bland for my Asian palette but I don't think you are going to find anything spicy in the German cuisine. I believe the regular pork knuckle usually comes with mashed potatoes but we got rice since this was an Asian tour company. This place probably appeals more to tourists than locals but it's still good overall. It has awesome view and great beer. That's all you really need on a vacation.

So much so that we went every night during our time staying along the river. From the food to the people, the entire experience was nothing but perfect. They also had a cordial called Rheinsteigtropfen. This cherry flavored 35% Kraeuter-Kirsch drink was very good. It is not a very big place. It is an older house that is now used as the restaurant and bar. So the rooms are small and so not many tables. But the food and drinks make this a good stop. The only person working was a nice young man who we found out was the only son of the owners. His English was fine and he seemed truest interested in our opinion of their products.
