German historic "Kaffeekultur" on the Münzplatz
During a stroll through Koblenz I had the chance to invite my brother to a typical "second" breakfast and also give him the chance to experience German Kaffeekultur before lunch: a mix of young people in between classes or on a break from the office, housewives in between shopping stops, pensioners enjoying a leisurely late breakfast while reading the newspaper - on paper attached to long rods ostensibly so that guests don't take the paper with them.
Our mix of cold cuts, eggs, fresh juice, and Flammkuchen (my non-typical choice of tarte flambée for breakfast) were fine just like the freshly made cappuccino, all served in a light airy café atmosphere with marble tables and high ceiling.
It was too chilly to sit outside on the gray cool January Monday, but it was nice for me to compare the dining area with what I could remember from years before when the food was Chinese and the interior design was very different. As I learned from the Café's own website, there was a café named Kaffeewirtschaft on the same spot a century earlier, so my spontaneous invitation for my brother to try German Kaffeekultur was actually historically accurate. Although comparing the café to paradise (the street location is Paradies 1), as the cute and informative menu does, might be a bit exaggerated, we enjoyed our hour there. read more
