I first went to Darryl's with a friend in 1998. I was in need of a dress for a black tie event, and Darryl put me in a gorgeous, slinky, full-length dress that made me feel glamorous. I've long since outgrown "slinky," but have been back many times for all kinds of clothes -- sweaters, skirts, blouses, jackets, a dress for my son's wedding. I just went back today, in need of something to wear to that same black tie event, but more than 25 years later. One day, I went into Darryl's Boutique and met Darryl. I felt him to be down to earth, and a man with a sharp eye for what I needed, and that was the very first time we met! It was like trying on the first pair of shoes and they fit perfectly. Darryl knew to pick out clothes for me to try . . . and they are always very comfortable and visually beautiful. Don't just admire the window, go inside. I went to Darryls for the first time last week. I was only going to look inside for a few minutes. I found so many things that I loved that I ended up staying longer. Darryl and Ella were really helpful! I purchased so many clothes that were flattering, original looking, beautiful and versatile! Darryl is reasonably priced and the proof is in the pudding in that he has lasted in this neighborhood for years. You must also visit his store in Beacon, NY on Main Street. He's the sweetest guy and he has really carved his signature on these beautiful diverse dresses pants etc.. this man has style and so will you after you buy your clothes here. I love my dress!!! I have been going to Darryl's for several years now and am always satisfied with the service, the selection, and the affordability of the prices. As an older woman with a few extra pounds, I often have difficulty finding appropriate, well-fitting clothes that work in a business environment. But here at Darryl's, I always get the help I need to find flattering outfits to wear to work and play -- and NEVER feel judged about my weight or age. I appreciate that Darryl remembers my preferences and takes the time to listen to what I need and to help me achieve my goals. The values are also outstanding --- clothes that hold up over the years and yet are accessibly priced. This is an unusual store nowadays - where you truly get the service you need while never being pressured. I read the very few negative reviews, and I urge people to be more open-minded. For instance, the no-returns policy is clearly stated, so please do not complain. And it is a small store with a large selection but a small staff, so don't complain if you have to wait a few minutes to be served. I promise you that it is worth the wait as they will give you the same patience and care they give everyone. I really do not like to shop, and have a tough time finding clothes that I like and that fit me well, so when I can go into a store with a great selection of clothes (I am middle aged) and someone who gets what I'd like, well it makes me feel like I've struck gold. Darryl carries mid-range better brands - like SnoSkins, Joseph Ribkoff and Elliott Lauren - solid, well-made, classically stylish with a little oomph and at a reasonable price point. All I know is that my friends who have shopped here look GREAT - the apparel is eclectic but very fashionable, & reasonably priced. One friend really enjoyed the service she got from a staffer named Virginia - so I am on my way there to see Darryl's NOW and will give a more detailed update after my OWN shopping adventure. Ok, back from Darryl's: I bought 2 beautiful blouses here for $250 total, with tax. There were styles I could not have easily found elsewhere, and certainly very fashionable (my 2 blouses are private-label couture, made in Italy and Canada). My overall sense of this boutique's strength is that attractive dresses rule the day - and indeed, media ad signage clips posted around Darryl's seems to attest to this fact. I was not in the market for a dress, but I saw several ranging $99 (sales) to $300 that I would have loved to buy. From a demographic perspective I would say that this shop caters very well to women of age 35 on up, with the styles appealing to mature women who want to look appropiately attractive/sexy. There is a selection of Teenflo apparel and some other quite youthful clothing so I do think that particularly sophisticated young women in their 20s could find something fun to wear here, too. The service at this store is helpful but not pushy, and you will not be knocked over by ill-mannered fellow shoppers thanks to the relaxed boutique atmosphere and uncluttered, easy to navigate space. The only element of viisit at which I was a bit disappointed was the Yelper discount which was extended to me;my other friends had mentioned a sale-type percentage discount off their entire order, while I was given a $20 gift certificate toward my next visit. I would recommend this store highly if you live on the Upper West Side and particularly if you are in a hurry to find need a knock-out elegant little dress, or a dressy blouse. I've been a fan of Darryl's Boutique, and of Darryl himself, for 35 years, ever since he opened his shop on Amsterdam Ave. A friend who lived in the neighborhood called me at my downtown home, saying: "You have to get up here. There's a terrific new shop." I've been trekking uptown ever since. Through the years, Darryl has supplied the staples of both my work and casual wardrobe (I still have and wear many of the items). Darryl has impeccable taste and will gently steer you to what looks good on you and away from what looks wrong. He also has a phenomenal memory for past purchases (he remembered a Ralph Lauren red shirtwaist dress I'd bought 25-plus years ago)!. He and his shop are real NY gems -- you don't last 4 decades in this city if you aren't doing everything right. After recently having a baby, and returning to work, I found some wonderful forgiving styles here. I bought 3 dresses and a new suit all at once. Cool prints. All of the clothes I bought were stretchy, can be hand washed, and won't wrinkle. I make a visit to Darryl's an absolute top priority whenever I'm in New York City. I have found so many of my unusual, lasting, "knock-out" pieces there. The clothes are of high quality, so when you find something you love, it lasts. And the price points are affordable (the shop also maintains a small sale rack with great buys). I'm into comfort, so I've found amazing skirts, sweaters, blazers, trousers and coats at Darryls. I've also found great dresses. But I can see that if I were a young professional I could find suits and silk blouses, etc. My strong recommendation. Make Darryl's a destination. You will get so many compliments and feel so good. I wandered past their store one day and saw a sign announcing the prices were 50% off. That, of course, drew me in, but the service was what kept me there. I thought I found something nice, but the women knew their selection so well they found interesting styles for me that I never would have tried on my own. They made me look GOOOOOD! And that's not always an easy trick since I don't have a model's body. It was friendly and fun - they even have nice shoes in the dressing rooms so you can see what you look like in good shoes and not snow boots. I've been a customer of Darryl's shop for 10 years and I travel all the way from Delaware to shop there! The thing that sold me initially on the store was Darryl's service, and the quality and value are also good. You can go in the store and tell Daryl what type of outfit that you're looking for and he'll come up with several things for you to choose from. I appreciate that because it saves time, but more importantly, I don't have a good fashion sense and I can count on Darryl to tell me what pieces go well together, and also what looks good on me. As another reviewer said, Darryl is honest about what works and what doesn't work. The styles that the store has are classics that you'll be able to wear for a long time, but with a bit of stylishness or edginess to give people a unique look. I feel the prices are reasonable considering it is New York. Because the styles are ones that will last a long time, I feel that you definitely get a good value for your money at Darryl's. The pint sized associate literally grunted at me as I offered her "thank you, have a nice day" on my way out. I stop at Darryl's every time I am in NYC, which is approx. twice a year. I always find something unusual and not off the rack looking. Very unique pieces, mixed with standards. I have been shopping here since I was in college - and I'm about to have my 25th college reunion! And I think that says a few things: 1. this store has a wide variety of styles -- some appropriate for college kids (simple tanks in great colors, classic white blouses with a twist, capris,) and all the way up through the 50's. (So many UWS Moms I know have bought their dress for their kid's Bar Mitzvah here.) 2. This place has staying power. Think about how much business you have to do, how well you have to know your customers - to stay around for so long. 3. He has an eye for what works Is Darryl's cutting edge? No. But is it the kind of store where you'll wear the things you buy to DEATH? Yep. They are modern without being trendy, so you can wear them a long time. (And you can look modern without looking matronly or like you're trying to look 22) Is it cheap? No. But it is extremely well priced, and you won't see yourself coming and going. Darryl has stuff from France and from downtown. He buys a wide variety for a wide variety of sizes and ages. (Though I think the focus is on 30+) Darryl's is the type of store where you will ALWAYS find something you like. (Especially dresses - he has a huge selection). Need a little dress for tooling around town? Check. Need an LBD for a cocktail party? Check. Need to look a bit polished for work but wouldn't dream of wearing a suit? Check. He even has a small case of super inexpensive jewelry that's always fun. Super super casual isn't his strong suit - but that's what the Gap/J crew/BR are for. My favorite thing, and the reason I keep going back is Darryl himself. He knows what will work on your body, he'll tell you the truth if something doesn't work. And he's basically just a good guy.
