I paid $189 for a pair of shoes ordered from this boutique. Received the shoes, but the leather was stretched out on them. I paid for shipping to return them to the store, the owner received the shoes, put a new pair into the box and marked rejected on the box to avoid paying Shipping fees to send them back to me. After that, they were sent to the USPS facility in Atlanta and I have never seen the shoes and did not receive a refund from the boutique. Save yourself a lot of trouble and money and avoid doing business with this man. To buy or not to buy? Buying shoes is a very involved process for me. For my "staple" shoes, I am willing to throw down a lot of money, but I have to know I can dress them up or down and that they are of high quality and will last a LONG time. After a lengthy search I finally bought a pair of great, sturdy, and kinda sexy Freelance boots. The owner of the store assured me these were well-made and would last years. After 2 months, however, a chunk of the sole separated from the shoe. Here is why this store is great: I went back to the store and the owner right away acknowledged that that was unacceptable and he would not have expected that. He not only fixed them, but personally delivered them to my home 2 days later. Now THAT'S customer service. Hard to come by these days. While most would probably never encounter a situation like that at Dantone, it's worth shopping at locally-owned business with people who stand by their goods, I'd say. I'm very conflicted to leave 2 stars, I would have gone lower but I do like the things I bought. My issue is the ethics of this store. I went there today and bought a pair of shoes and a sweater. The guy Joseph told me that the shoes were Italian - they were very nice pair of cork wedges, unfortunately they were quite pricey ($90) but I thought, ok they're Italian and they're comfortable and they do look nice. So I bought them and when I got home, I put the box away and saw the bottom of the shoe box with a label that said, "Made in China". I went online and looked up the brand and saw that the designer is not Italian but in fact Argentinian and lives in the US. BAD BIZ ETHICS LYING!! That made me look at the sweater I bought. It was reduced from $289 to $89. I remembered asking Joseph while at the store if it was brand new as the wool had some minor "balling" going on - looks like it's been gently used. He said "yes, it's brand new" and when I pointed out the balling, he said nothing. Upon returning home, I noticed it was "Made in China" and a label that said that the collar is detachable and should be removed before cleaning. Perplexed, I took a close look to find 3 small buttoms around the top part of the collar. I couldn't figure it out until it dawned on me that this sweater must have had either a fur or other material attachment and it was lost and therefore the markdown? Or someone has this piece on consignment and it's missing a component. The more I think about this, the more miffed I am, but when I looked at my receipt, it says, "No returns or refunds". Like I said, I would have no problems buying these things if I was not fed some BS that "everything in our store is France, Italy, and Spain" - I guess China is now part of France, Italy, and Spain? 2 stars for the fact that the sandals are pretty and comfy, the sweater is nice but I've accepted the fact that I bought a second hand sweater (overpriced). BUT I DID BUSINESS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT I WAS BUYING EUROPEAN GOODS, OK? Which makes me wonder and I bet I'm correct, he has a "Valentio" wallet marked down from $159 to $99. I have a feeling, that's "Made in China" too. After all, I did not see the Certificate of Authenticity. And I know all real Italian leather wallers (ladies) start around $500. I will not be returning to this boutique again due to its dishonest fashion of doing business. This store has great shoes. But the man selling tells tourists that they can get a refund on the tax they pay, when they leave the USA. THIS IS NOT TRUE. you cannot claim tax in the US when leaving. Australia and the UK..yes. The US doesn't have anywhere in the airport to do this, check every website, you CANNOT claim the tax. So if he tells you you can, so you think you will get it back and the shoes will cost you less.....you can't. I found this to be a bit dishonest on his part. read more

They have a large selection of cool, comfortable shoes that are good for your feet. Being in my 40's (so weird to say) and standing and walking all day, I certainly need that now more than ever. I recently purchased a pair of Camper shoes from Dantone Boutique. The whole experience was great. I went in while walking Union street. The sales associate was very welcoming, told me a bit about the store and invited me to peruse. The selection of male shoes was of high quality. I am really happy with the shoes I purchased, they are comfortable, versatile and unique. The sales associate I worked with was helpful. She offered me some good tips on different outfits I could wear the shoes with. I did not catch her name, but I know that she mentioned she graduated from LMU. I like this place because the store clerk is very polite and the shoe selection is generally tasteful. I often go check out their selection when I have time. However, I had a pretty bad experience here. I bought a pair of Camper walking shoes for $130 which I really liked and I wore them in the city most days for about 2.5 months. At that point, the sole of the shoes started to detach from the bottom and I had two holes underneath one of the pair. I went back hoping they will replace them or give a refund or send it to the supplier for examination but all they said was they can't do anything because the shoes look all worn out. Well, yes, that is why I am there, $130 shoes should not get worn out in 2.5 months. I like going to the neighborhood store for shoe purchases but if they won't have the customer service of online retailers, there is no point. read more

Beautiful store and they had the shoes that I wanted. I went on a blustery stormy day even though the store is located across town from where I live, to pick up a pair of shoes that I wanted but couldn't find at another store. I bought them with cash even though they were quite expensive, but I bought them with gift money from the holidays. When they didn't feel as comfortable as I first thought, and didn't accommodate my feet which have medical issues, I tried to return them. Unfortunately, the owner told me that they do not give refunds - only store credit. He pointed to a tiny sign located on the side of the desk where the cash register was and to tiny print on the receipt itself. Both of which are not clearly visible. While it's fine to have that policy, it's not fine to have it basically hidden and not clearly visible for patrons to see BEFORE buying shoes. This turned out to be a very expensive $300 lesson. I always enjoy shopping at Dantone's on Union Street in San Francisco. They carry a large nice selection of stylish, fun, comfortable shoes from a variety of manufacturers, including some manufacturers who are difficult to find elsewhere (such as my personal favorite, the Italian brand Rapasardi). The owner, Farzad ,has a relaxed ,helpful , and customer-service oriented approach. He allows me to walk up and down Union Street to test if the shoe is comfortable enough and stable enough on my feet . I am considerably older than many of the young adults who typically frequent Union Street. I have chronically achy feet, and a chronic back injury which are paramount whenever I buy new shoes. Sometimes the only way to determine if you can comfortably and safely walk in a shoe is to walk outside in real conditions on the sidewalk. But, most stores won't allow a return if the shoe has been worn outside. Farzad has also put time into searching online and at shows for a pair of shoes I really wanted in my smaller size . On one occasion , he allowed me to buy a pair of difficult to find shoes which needed modification with the agreement that I could get a refund if the modification was not possible. I don't know if this is typical, or if it was only because he knew that I had searched for so long to find these shoes. The point is that he was fair and willing to work with me. It's not a given that a small, independent boutique style store will allow refunds. Many of the smaller, chic stores on Chestnut and Union Street make it impossible or very difficult to get a refund. They only give store credits . Much as I believe in supporting local businesses, that's why I sometimes avoid buying from them, and shop at hassle-free places such as Macy's or Nordstrom's , instead. read more
