Drop off was well organized and the staff seemed so cordial and helpful. Each child picked up a painted rock as a keepsake from the very first day which bodes well for the session. The whole company is great, and I've always enjoyed the performances, but I've seen the National Ballet perform and I just can't give the AB 5 stars. Pricing is reasonable too; the Jubilee isn't a huge auditorium so the $50 seats are still pretty good. I believe the most expensive seats are around $120. They also take a keen interest before the show and during the intermission to provide entertainment for the kids. Instead of the smaller dancers being the main focus they were used as backup dancers for the mediocre performances by older kids. The younger kids were often relegated to sitting on the stage watching the older dancers. It was also sad to see how missteps were made including near miss crashes between dancers and "soloists." It is a shame that the Edmonton School of Ballet used these little kids as a marketing tools to sell more tickets. You would think they would showcase their best students but, sadly, they probably did. If you do not believe me, wait until the DVD comes on sale! Be prepared for a good laugh - not at the kids' expense but at the quality of training at ESB.

The motivation to improve comes very fast when there's a purpose to the learning and the students consistently experience personal and team success. This music school is unlike any other in Edmonton. The owners are highly educated, creative, flexible people, and so are the staff. Their methods create high motivation. Your kiddo will WANT to play! If you're unsure, the Intro to Aerial Arts might be better: you do trapeze, vertical rope, and aerial silks. My teachers for Aerial Silks were Sheri and Sandra. They were fantastic. My second class was with Mackenzie and was Aerial Fitness & Cross Conditioning. This class was always fun. Mackenzie kept things fresh with a mix of stretching, strength, and cardio using the floor, trapeze, silks, and other fitness apparatuses. I am about to sign up for the Beginner Contortion class for the Fall and am really looking forward to it! The staff is friendly and all the instructors are actively honing their craft. The class sizes are small so you get what you pay for: lots of one on one attention.

Beginners can take their Taste of the Circus taster class held on a weekend several times a year, or their Intro to Aerial Arts class, a 6-week introductory class with instruction on aerial silks, rope and static trapeze. They also offer advanced classes in the aforementioned disciplines, as well as contortion, straps, hoop, loop/hammock, handstands, aerial yoga, conditioning, and kids' classes too! Students even get a chance to perform in their annual student show, Let There Be Height. I have taken several of their classes in the past and have found the staff to all be friendly, encouraging, and safety-minded. It is an excellent upper body workout (hauling your body weight 30ft in the air while climbing the silks will do that!), but should probably be supplemented with other activities for a full-body workout. Although they have safety precautions (there are crash mats below each of the apparatuses and full warm-up and cool-downs each class), you are relying on your own strength (and nothing else - no safety harnesses) to prevent you from falling to the ground, and this part freaks out my non-circus friends routinely, so just a heads up. There have been no serious injuries here that I know of, and they have a very distinct skills progression and won't teach you anything you're not ready to learn. Classes are relatively pricey at around $30 a class if you sign up for the whole session, or $50 for their taster class, but totally worth it for the uniqueness of the workout! See you in the air!

The Myer Horowitz Theatre is an old-school type of theatre; an all-purpose kind of place that could…read morebe used for academic lectures, ballet recitals, and rock concerts (as long as they aren't too rowdy). It is located in the Student Union Building at the University of Alberta. The staff are always super-friendly every time I've been here. The ushers, the bar staff - even the people who sell the band merch whom I don't think actually work here but still, the Horowitz's friendly atmosphere rubs off on them. The U of A advertises the Horowitz as having "a close, intimate view of the performers on stage." Unfortunately it provides a close, intimate view (and feel) of your neighbours too. The seats (all 720 of them) seem to be designed for people who are 5 foot one and weigh 120 pounds. It kind of sucks to have another human decompress beside you and flow into the space you paid for. It is not spacious like more modern venues such as the Winspear. So if you can't remember the last time you walked a kilometre and you think French Fries are a vegetable you'll hate it here. It won't help to buy two seats because of the non-retractable arm rests. The seats are situated on a slight ascent but it's not steep enough to give you an unobstructed view of the stage. In other words, if you enjoy staring at the backs of people's heads you'll love it here. The seats are slightly offset so they're not directly behind each other but it still sucks. Especially if you get a couple of lovebirds in front of you who insist on resting their heads against each other. There's a large waiting area outside the theatre to laze around in while you're waiting for the doors of the theatre itself to open. Note: The time given on your ticket for the doors opening is for the downstairs entrance from the SUB building to the waiting area - not for the theatre. This is probably an attempt to get people in the building earlier so they'll buy drinks. The Myer Horowitz has a cool historical vibe. Just sitting here I can see the ghosts of old men in grey tweed jackets smoking pipes and lamenting the fact that Canada never gave communism a try. I can also see radical punk rock bands playing here, diving off the stage and beating the shit out of their fans. Also lamenting that Canada never gave communism a try. *The above paragraph is for entertainment value only. The Myer Horowitz Theatre is not associated with the Communist Party of Canada nor is it haunted. (As far as I know.)
