City Arts Centre - Pottery class in progress at the City Arts Center

City Arts Centre

Think of the Edmonton City Arts Centre as a cruise ship far out at sea, with lots of activities…read moreplanned to keep you happy. The catalogue headers give a good idea of the breadth available: cooking and baking, crafts and handiwork, dance, mind and body, music, photography, pottery and sculpture, silversmithing, soaps and lotions, theatre, visual art, and writing. The hunnybunny has done some silversmithing, pottery (pix added to this review), and painting, and we've done a cooking class together. There's a lot you can use to distract yourself from a particularly heavy snowstorm :-) The classes have been well planned and leave you with a nice artifact to commemorate your new (or growing) skill. The teachers personalities vary, so not all students will click with all teachers, but the centre seems pretty responsive in allowing switching between classes.

I recently came for a cooking class at this venue. I went in the front entrance and the staff…read moreperson at the front desk directed me to the stairs to the second floor. For a Sunday morning, they had a room with art class, children's programming on computers, and then the Antique room where the cooking class was. The class had about 9 students and there were tables and chairs set up. When it was time to cook, the kitchen got a bit crowded with 2 stoves and people standing around the middle counter space. We had to maneuver around others to find cooking utensils and bowls. But all the cupboards and drawers are labelled so it wasn't too difficult to find what you're looking for. The knives were sharp and they have lots of cutting boards. There are also lots of pans and some deep ones to hold lots of food. We cooked, ate, and then cleaned up. They even had containers for those that wanted to take some leftovers home. The venue is convenient with parking and also accessible by walking or transit. It's an older building as the washrooms are dated but everything was clean and in working order. I would come back and take a class here again.

I went here in the late 90s for my diploma and now I am finding more reasons to attend. I went to…read moresee The Crucible here. We were in a theater upstairs. I found the space unusual because it was all around, which I think would make it harder to coordinate a play because there is no front or back. They seemed to make it work. The acting was decent and I love seeing the passion of the students. Definitely will be here again for events. And for the student, smaller class sizes, more one on one attention, close to downtown and LRT and an easy to maneuver campus make it worth the extra cost.

I decided to complete all my courses online and it was great so I didn't have to go into MacEwan except to write exams or do a presentation. The exams were after work hours so it was convenient for me working and taking courses. The buildings were easy to find classrooms and I only ever bought food from the Tim Hortons and it could be a long line. Most of the instructors were fairly good to reply back promptly when I had questions or concerns. There was one instructor that wasn't very good and when I shared my concerns with the Department, they were very open to hearing my feedback. The only issue I had was with the admissions department who act like they don't care about providing decent service and walk around with the ho hum attitude.

I went to Aradia Fitness at the weekend with a private group for stagette party. Chantel was our…read moreinstructor and she did a great job planning the lesson so at the end we would all be able to do a short routine. The facility is right on Whyte Ave and it's a nice space with room for 10 poles and a little waiting area. We arrived a little early to put up some decorations and we spent a long time taking videos, pics and played a little game at the end too. Chantel was accommodating which was great as it was the start of a really fun night. I'd go back for fun and certainly recommend as a group activity. My leg are wrecked after it so defo gives the body a work out if you are considering a different kind of fitness activity.

Booking our group was a bit of a challenge and they seemed really adamant that our time slot could not be adjusted, we had wanted to come a bit early to play some games and make this space part of our stagette party but in order to get another hour of space time they wanted us to have everyone pay for another hour of lesson...if you get lots of parties and stagette bookings why not offer a discounted price to have the party come use the space a bit before the lesson or after? We would have totally done it. Instead we had one hour lesson and even then the time it took to get everyone setup, introduced, etc the lesson didn't quite seem like an hour. I enjoyed the quick little lesson and learning some pole dancing moves but wanted some more challenge so we asked our instructor to teach us some other moves we had seen on some videos. That made it more interesting. Overall I think it was a cool experience to do once but I wouldn't pay to go again.
