We hired Dan for our wedding photography in Sept 2009 and I can not say enough nice things about him and the other photographers (Paul Steinke) his assistant at our wedding. We picked Dan out of the long list of photographers because of his style of photography--we did not want a "cookie cutter" photographer and wanted someone who would capture our personalities and candid moments without us even knowing--Dan did just that and beyond! We did not even know that he was taking pictures during the wedding and the reception--what a great surprise it was to see the shots he did get! His pictures speak louder than words and he is very professional and reliable and a great person to work with. Our wedding pictures were actually available for us to view faster than we expected via his web site and our guests loved the wedding slide show he put together during the ceremony! I have to give him a 5 star rating for the excellent photos Dan took for us. We also did the Engagement session. Photos turned out great, not over shopped but touched up where needed. During the wedding, he captured some great candids during the ceremony and reception where you didn't even notice he was there. The portraits and bride and groom photos are probably my favorite. LATEST REVIEW: We had Dan do our holiday family photo again this year (took advantage of his amazing $150 'all digital photo files' promotion) and am UPGRADING him to 5-stars. He was so natural and fun with Mylan, so responsive and flexible and took the initiative to suggest some great shots and placement. The photos were beautiful and so special. PREVIOUS REVIEW: I was looking for a family photographer for some holiday pictures and asked Dan to do a sitting this week, as I was not only impressed with Dan's work but also his professional, efficient yet warm communication style. He was very flexible and focused on what we wanted. During the session, Dan would show us what he'd taken so we could modify and tweak the composition, lighting just to our liking. The photo session was incredibly casual, comfortable and fun for all 8 of us (including a squirmy 18 month toddler!).And as a result, the photos turned out beautifully, capturing everyone with their natural expressions and smiles. My husband and I were married on July 20, 2013 and we used Dan as our photographer. He was AMAZING! He is super easy-going, friendly and most importantly a fantastic photographer. We had a daytime wedding (noon start time). Dan arrived at 9:45 to take some getting ready pics and to do some photos of the groom and I prior to the ceremony. He had some great ideas and worked with our personalities to get some great, natural shots. During the ceremony, Dan was like a stealth ninja. He says this on his website and I swear it is true. We barely saw him taking pictures (besides the portrait shots we did) and he really captured our event in such a special way. He got some great shots of my husband and I and our friends and family having a great time. I really enjoy pictures that are real and not staged and Dan really does a wonderful job of capturing these moments. He also got our pictures to us for viewing within days of our wedding! (Oh my! Just logged into Yelp and found that this review was never finalized/posted! Whoops!) Dan shot our wedding in fall 2011 and was FANTASTIC! I absolutely love our wedding photos, as does everyone who has seen them. We had an outdoor wedding and Dan was able to provide full coverage--for both the portrait sessions and the 'photojournalistic' photos of the event unfolding-- on his own. We contracted with Dan only a month before the wedding and didn't have time to meet with him in person beforehand (due to our schedule constraints, not his!)--but despite being unfamiliar with the venue and having minimal interaction with us in advance, he really captured our style and personalities in the photos. However, the event that really struck home for me just how exceptional Dan's photography is actually happened just a few months ago: I saw the photos from another wedding that I recently attended (a quite expensive wedding with a quite expensive photographer). These photos were...fine....but they lacked soul. They didn't tell a story or evoke the personality of the event. By contrast, both sets of our parents are still (over 1 yr and a grandchild later!) watching slideshows of Dan's photography of our wedding and showing off the photos to anyone they can!! Hiring Dan was one of the best decisions that went into our wedding--I highly recommend working with him! read more

Dan photographed our wedding in the fall of 2011 and he then did our friends wedding in the summer of 2014. I cannot say enough about how amazing Dan is as a person and how great the pictures he takes turn out. One of the only ways to capture your wedding day forever is through photographs and I have no regrets in giving that incredibly important task to Dan and neither did our friends who hired him. We hired Dan for our wedding and he was such a pleasure to work with! Dan is very genuine and easy to get along with. I was impressed with how patient he was with the groom and groomsmen when they were fooling around before the wedding and not being serious. He really listened to our requests and made sure to cover all of them. I really liked his assistant too, she was a gem to wok with. I really appreciate the focus that Dan had during the wedding because I found out later he was having some family matters at home that needed attention, but I never knew. Also, I hired Diamond Dave as my Dj, who is amazing and you need to go see him at the bar Dan's in Walnut Creek if you haven't had the opportunity to see him yet. Anyways, I really enjoyed watching Dan (the photographer's) amazement at Diamond Dave's skills. Dan Johanson was amazing from start to finish. Out of a large list of potential photographers we were drawn to Dan because of his beautiful portfolio, particularly his portraits from abroad. And we definitely made the right choice. He was extremely accessible for brainstorming and planning leading up to our wedding and once our special day arrived he was spot on for the entire thing. He always knew exactly where to position us for light and backdrop when we were staging shots, but always directed us in a friendly and non-pushy or businesslike manner. When it came to the ceremony he was able to get a load of wonderful shots without being obtrusive or blocking off our guests from the experience. At our reception he quickly set up a slideshow showing pictures from our ceremony just an hour before! And he was always there to capture intimate and other emotive moments that we can now cherish for the rest of our lives. He stayed well beyond when he was contracted to wrap up and was incredibly friendly and professional throughout the entire thing. And this doesn't even include the final product! His photos are amazing. His use of light is fantastic and he always seemed to be able to catch even the briefest of special moments. I must admit I was a bit nervous about finding a photographer online for my wedding. However, once I had my first conversation with Dan and saw the photographs on his website I felt confident that we'd get some beautiful photos. Dan was great to work with and very nice! He was responsive up to our wedding, answering questions and touching base to discuss what we wanted on the big day. On our wedding day Dan showed up right when he said he would and started shooting away! We liked that Dan wasn't overbearing or bossy like some other wedding photographers I've seen.
