I was only referred to Dr Fittingoff because it was just my luck that his colleague (who I was…read moresupposed to see), had died the day before I called for an appointment. He would be my sixth endocrinologist since my T1D diagnosis, so I was already used to the "shame game" that I know all diabetics feel at some point. Right off the bat, he questioned how I was prescribed Ozempic. Umm, one look at my medical history, chart, and labs, would have answered your question, bro. At the next appointment when discussing why my BG was spiking after dinner, his medical advice to me was "You can always eat less." You don't say? Gosh I hadn't thought of that?! This guy reminded me of that old dinosaur tv host guy in Mrs. Doubtfire and needs to retire. Luckily he stopped taking my insurance. Not to mention the drive to his office from Burbank was brutal. See anyone else if you can.

He told me there is a pill I could take to shrink it and it will disappear. I moved and I now have a new Endocrinologist and he told me that it's not true. There is no pill you can take and it will just go away. Not only did Dr. David Fittinghoff lied to me and when I talked to my new Endocrinologist I felt like a complete idiot!!! This is malpractice!!!! But I just learned from my new Endocrinologist that

He didn't rush me at all -- we spent a full 45+ minutes together, and he made sure I understood everything. He listened carefully to my concerns, asked thoughtful follow-up questions, and never made me feel like I was just another appointment on the schedule. That level of patience and presence is so rare these days. What impressed me most was how up-to-date he is. He referenced the latest research and studies (some from just the past year), explained the science in plain English, and showed me why certain approaches are now preferred over older ones. It was obvious he's someone who stays current with medical advancements rather than practicing on autopilot. I left feeling genuinely informed and empowered, not confused or dismissed. On top of that, he's incredibly caring and compassionate. You can tell he truly wants his patients to get better and feel supported. His bedside manner is warm, reassuring, and professional all at once. He treated me like a person, not a chart number. The staff is equally awesome.

My experience with Dr. Shilita was extremely disappointing. Instead of listening to concerns and collaborating as part of a medical team, he became visibly upset when I requested a second opinion. He raised his voice and told me, "You just lost a great doctor part of your team, Dr. Mariam Bakhtary," which felt incredibly unprofessional and ego-driven. What made the situation worse was that Dr. John Li who I was made to feel was somehow a downgrade is actually Dr. Bakhtary's partner and was simply away on vacation for a few days before returning. The reaction I received for simply advocating for myself as a patient was inappropriate and uncomfortable. Patients deserve doctors who listen, communicate professionally, and prioritize care over pride. If something feels off, trust yourself and seek another opinion. Your health is too important not to.
