This was a traumatised city and it was this way I guess 40 years. On our 2nd tour it again struck me how he tells the truth of the horror without any rancour or bitterness - he lived in it and through it. A Belfast native, he grew up during the era of the Troubles, but his memory stretches from the settlement days and in and around every corner. You'll find on his eclectic tours that you can steer the discussion in any direction you wish. You'll only fail at trying to temper his enthusiasm. I understand that he offers tours that focus on history or street art or other specific subjects or neighborhoods, but I imagine your best bet would be to do as we did and just unleash him. Belfast is a city with good restaurants and attractions but a good tour helps bring out the incredibly rich history and will certainly show you a hole-in-the-wall or two you'd never have otherwise found. We went out on the town for a pretty unscripted three hours. My 78 year-old father started to fade along the way, so Marti detoured to a nearby spot for a quick cuppa, enabling our small group the legs to carry on. Next time I may leave Dad behind in order that I might test Marti's stamina in full. We were offer a taxi tour at first but the when we gave our ISANGO voucher in we were told that because we didn't book direct we couldn't take the taxi without paying again, I have now emailed both City Sightseeing and ISANGo over a dozen times for a refund and still haven't got one! Thousands of our citizens died for nothing really. I knew of the murders of unarmed innocent people that took place in this proud city. I knew of the lies and the cover-ups but I knew little of the detail until we took this guided tour when we were in the city for a few nights. To be honest I didn't give these killings too much thought as many more followed. It also felt a bit odd participating in a tour in your own country about a history I lived through, as it feels that it's only for tourists but it's not, rather everyone in the country should have the opportunity to take this tour. I saw for the first time where the State murders actually occurred. The area is so condensed, small, contained; slaughter in an area smaller than our local car park and that awful reality hit me like a hammer. Those who give the tour speak with passion and they do so without bitterness. It is this that is the loudest message from this tour - forgiveness and a sense of peace allows these folks to move on Janus-like looking to a brighter future while not forgetting an awful past. There's a lesson in humanity here for us all.

All this was done with such ease and laid back style by our amazing tour guide and never rushing us to "...be back on the bus by..." edicts!  If you like me have a wonderment about history, ruins, spirituality great food choices or just plain every day life, this is the tour for you!    You can't beat the priced and will not ever regret it! We will be back to Ireland because of Rabbies and when we get back to Scotland will check them out there as well.

We enjoyed the appetizer of Guinness and onion soup and the Inn's bread but they weren't as special as the menu descriptions made them out to be: the whiskey and smoked cheese roll was hard to tell either of those flavors but the butter and pesto were very good. The soup was fine but I guess we had high expectations for it to be better than your average French onion soup. Again for entrees I think the menu descriptions built up our expectations but everything seemed even more bland than the apps. The BAHARAT SPICE RUMP OF IRISH LAMB was cooked well but was pretty flavorless even with the hummus and sauce and the lamb fat potato stack just soft potato. The unique piccolo peppers were the only thing that provided some pop to the dish- maybe it wasn't seasoned properly? The filet with the Bushmills whiskey black pepper cream and roast mushroom tomato and rocket was seasoned a little better but the cream was lacking some punch. Good but not great. It all sounds good but doesn't feel like elevated cooking especially for the price. Finally the desserts were split. We ordered a shot of the Bushmills 10 yr to go with the butterscotch sundae which made the sundae perfect. Without it I'm thinking way too sweet. The milk and honey delice was disappointing. We ate the ganache and left the rest. The crust had a strange herb like flavor that was very unappealing.
