A 'boutique' hotel, huh? Just HOW 'boutique'? Let me count the ways. Our Uber driver dropped us off right at the indicated spot, and we couldn't find the entrance (reminds me of the Melior in Valetta, which was embedded within a Starbucks). Squinting our eyes more, we finally found the narrow entrance at the top of some stairs. Lugging bags up the cobble-stoned slope to the steps is not easily accomplished after you get off an overnight flight, but we managed. It's 4 or 5 floors high, with 2 or 3 rooms on each (why we had a hard time finding the entrance!). But being so small, it's almost always fully booked. Our good fortunes began with the lady telling us that, at 10:00, our room was ready, since the previous guests vacated the night before! Precisely what we needed to get a few hours of shut-eye before going out to explore. We had decided to take a more spacious suite on the 4th floor (4A) for about 50% more than the regular room. The furnishings are a little dated, but the space was comfortable for a couple of nights' stay. Included in the suite is a kitchenette - fridge, microwave, heating elements, and even the convenience of a washer and dryer. At $160 a night, it's good value for anywhere, including Lisbon - the big hotels easily run $350 and up. But the best part is the location: right next to Sao Jorge castle and pretty much walking distance (15-20 minutes to the main action in Central Lisbon. Just be careful walking the hilly uneven surfaces! Breakfast was included in our rate - it's served in a quaint little room just as you enter the hotel, or al fresco. Don't feel like walking? tram stops literally in front of the hotel. So many restaurants and bars all around the premises. We also got a bottle of wine as our welcome gift (thanks to Expedia?) First time I'm drinking Mateus in easily 50 years! Cheers! read more
