WARNING (and why this review is only 4 stars): If you're looking to stay here to enjoy the lake, forget it. The lake is pretty gross and full of blue-green algae, so DON'T plan on swimming. Or leting your kids swim. Or letting your dog anywhere near it. If your only interested in the view, the trees, and a nice quiet place to chill out, it's still worth it, IMHO.

But we found a site without any neighbors and got set up rather quickly. If I remember right we paid about $30 for our electric post site. The campground was pretty quiet despite being just off the business loop and on the lake during a holiday weekend. The next morning we had to pack up right away, but not before my daughter enjoyed a hot shower in "the cleanest campground shower ever" (she's 14, so picky) and we got ready for the day in the *very* clean bathroom. This was very much appreciated after two weeks camping on BLM land with only a pit toilet available! We spoke briefly with the owner who told us she's managed it for the city for just a couple years and is still working on upgrades, but I thought the bathrooms were great as is. We were very satisfied, and if we could have stayed longer we would have made use of the lake and playground.

We were moving our family from Washington State across the country with a 42-foot fifth wheel, an SUV towing a cargo trailer, two tween children, three cats, a dog, a hamster, a gecko, and my elderly in-laws traveling separately with their own dog. We weren't on vacation--we were relocating our lives. Unfortunately, almost nothing about the trip went according to plan. High winds, health concerns, and vehicle problems forced repeated route changes. At one point, our SUV broke down 110 miles east of Rapid City, resulting in a $700 tow bill and several unexpected days of repairs. Throughout these delays, I remained in close contact with Mitchell KOA, calling multiple times to cancel, reschedule, and provide updates. I was transparent about our situation, our extra vehicle and trailer, and the challenges we were facing. Through all of it, the KOA community was incredible. From Montana to Wyoming and throughout South Dakota, every KOA owner, volunteer, and staff member we encountered treated us with patience, kindness, and understanding. As newcomers to RV life, we made mistakes, asked questions, and occasionally arrived after hours. Every campground we visited approached us with a spirit of hospitality and a willingness to help. By the time we arrived in Mitchell, we expected more of the same. Instead, we experienced the opposite. We arrived after office hours following another long day on the road. Tired and stressed, we were simply trying to get parked and settled safely for the night. Because of the campground layout and the size of our rig, we initially entered from the wrong direction. Rather than attempting a difficult backup maneuver, we safely circled around to reposition ourselves. Once at our site, we began setting up. One of our leveling jacks lost its foot during the trip, requiring us to manually level the RV before extending the slides. While my husband handled setup, I temporarily parked our SUV and cargo trailer while unloading pets and essentials before moving the vehicle. ~30/45 minutes later, a woman approached us and informed us our vehicle was blocking another guest. The moment I understood there was an issue, I immediately apologized and moved the vehicle. Had the interaction ended there, this review would not exist. Instead, what followed left us feeling humiliated and unwelcome. My husband and I repeatedly apologized and explained our situation. What surprised us most was being told that management had been watching us. If that was the case, I don't understand why no one came out sooner to offer guidance. A simple conversation when we arrived could have prevented the entire situation. When I explained I had disclosed our extra vehicle and spoken with the campground multiple times during our travel delays, I was told I had not. I eventually pulled up my call history and emails showing communications, only to discover they had been with the very person insisting they never happened. By this point, I was in tears. Not because we had been asked to move a vehicle or because we had made mistakes, but because after weeks of setbacks, breakdowns, unexpected expenses, exhausted kids, anxious pets, and the stress of relocating our entire lives, we encountered the first person on our journey who seemed unwilling to extend even a small amount of grace. Eventually, her husband stepped in. To his credit, he immediately de-escalated the situation. He listened, calmly explained where the vehicle could be parked, and treated us like people rather than problems. Within minutes, the issue was resolved. Looking back, I fully acknowledge we made mistakes. We drove where we shouldn't have, parked where we shouldn't have, and inconvenienced another guest. For that, we sincerely apologize. But hospitality is often measured not by how people are treated when everything goes perfectly, but by how they are treated when things don't. Every other KOA we visited demonstrated patience, kindness, and a willingness to help a struggling family navigate unfamiliar circumstances. Mitchell KOA was the one exception. We are deeply grateful for the many wonderful KOA owners, volunteers, and staff members who helped us throughout our journey. Unfortunately, our experience at Mitchell KOA left us feeling embarrassed, unwelcome, and disappointed. We sincerely hope future travelers--especially families navigating difficult circumstances--are met with the same patience, understanding, and grace that we were fortunate enough to receive everywhere else.

They charged us a flat rate for each tank regardless of how much was still in each tank. Between the two tanks we were a little over 40 pound and it cost us $61 and some change to fill the two tanks. We are really glad we weren't planning to stay here. This unscrupulous practice makes me wonder what other things they do to unsuspecting customers. What other methods of cheating are they doing??

The laundry room has nice big washers and dryers, two dollars to wash and $.25 per 10 minutes to dry Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi is a bit of a tragedy. You have to use it early in the morning before everybody gets up so if you have any work to get done, you're going to need your Starlink. Joyce at the Front Desk at check-in was exceptionally friendly, they have a nice little camp store and there are a lot of options for sites here, including cabins and tiny homes. You're also very close to Sioux Falls, maybe 4 miles, so there are things to do here Don't miss the Saturday farmers market downtown as well, that was a lot of fun and we had an excellent pizza

And this place has gone down hill, Since we moved here 12 yrs ago. Lot rent is way to high. Reason for higher lot rent is cause they are keeping up with inflation. They tell you go to the police station across town if you have no place to go. Water shuts off frequently around here. Plumbing system is out of date have a lot of issues. Valves under trailer houses that park provides are faulty and out of date. They don't notify you about anything except wanting more money for lot rent. They have higher standards for keeping your home and yard clean which is very much appreciated. They don't tolerate disturbances. They try to keep peace in the park. Which is a pulse. They do plow in the winter which has improved a lot since we moved in. They do need to put down salt or sand down when the roads get icy. We are informed about new owners and such business like that. It seems like anymore the owners try to do cheap fixes or repairs.

We were meeting up with family here before we headed to our vacation rental and it was the perfect place to do so. The day that we went there was a wedding party taking pictures in the green areas near the trees and as we drove further in I could see why they call this park Falls Park. There's ample parkin here and several seating and picnic tables sporadically placed through out. There's also a tower you can go up to have a better view of the falls, the park, and the surrounding area. It was also a nice reprieve from the heat of the day. There are a few trails that take you around the area and to the water. It's a lovely park to enjoy nature right in the city. When we walked closer to the falls we found the perfect picnic table under the shade to cool off. We didn't get to see the whole park but what we did see was impressive. I'd love to visit this park again should we be in the area.

During our visit, we noticed quite a bit of trash floating in and around the water, which took away from the natural beauty of the area. If you plan to explore the rocks, be sure to wear hiking shoes or other footwear with good traction, as they can be very slippery. We also enjoyed climbing the observation tower, which offers a great view of the surrounding park. Overall, it's a pleasant place to stretch your legs and enjoy nature, with just a few maintenance issues that, if addressed, would make the experience even better.
