We love this campground - perfect stopover spot when heading from MN to the black hills. The hookups are in very convenient spots and the sites are flat. The campground bathroom spaces are also nice & clean. The amenities they offer are the icing on the cake. Corn hole, mini golf & the huge playground kept my toddler busy all night long. When I booked our reservation at Mitchell KOA Journey on May 3, I never imagined it would become the most disappointing stop on our family's cross-country relocation. We were moving our family from Washington State across the country with a 42-foot fifth wheel, an SUV towing a cargo trailer, two tween children, three cats, a dog, a hamster, a gecko, and my elderly in-laws traveling separately with their own dog. We weren't on vacation--we were relocating our lives. Unfortunately, almost nothing about the trip went according to plan. High winds, health concerns, and vehicle problems forced repeated route changes. At one point, our SUV broke down 110 miles east of Rapid City, resulting in a $700 tow bill and several unexpected days of repairs. Throughout these delays, I remained in close contact with Mitchell KOA, calling multiple times to cancel, reschedule, and provide updates. I was transparent about our situation, our extra vehicle and trailer, and the challenges we were facing. Through all of it, the KOA community was incredible. From Montana to Wyoming and throughout South Dakota, every KOA owner, volunteer, and staff member we encountered treated us with patience, kindness, and understanding. As newcomers to RV life, we made mistakes, asked questions, and occasionally arrived after hours. Every campground we visited approached us with a spirit of hospitality and a willingness to help. By the time we arrived in Mitchell, we expected more of the same. Instead, we experienced the opposite. We arrived after office hours following another long day on the road. Tired and stressed, we were simply trying to get parked and settled safely for the night. Because of the campground layout and the size of our rig, we initially entered from the wrong direction. Rather than attempting a difficult backup maneuver, we safely circled around to reposition ourselves. Once at our site, we began setting up. One of our leveling jacks lost its foot during the trip, requiring us to manually level the RV before extending the slides. While my husband handled setup, I temporarily parked our SUV and cargo trailer while unloading pets and essentials before moving the vehicle. ~30/45 minutes later, a woman approached us and informed us our vehicle was blocking another guest. The moment I understood there was an issue, I immediately apologized and moved the vehicle. Had the interaction ended there, this review would not exist. Instead, what followed left us feeling humiliated and unwelcome. My husband and I repeatedly apologized and explained our situation. What surprised us most was being told that management had been watching us. If that was the case, I don't understand why no one came out sooner to offer guidance. A simple conversation when we arrived could have prevented the entire situation. When I explained I had disclosed our extra vehicle and spoken with the campground multiple times during our travel delays, I was told I had not. I eventually pulled up my call history and emails showing communications, only to discover they had been with the very person insisting they never happened. By this point, I was in tears. Not because we had been asked to move a vehicle or because we had made mistakes, but because after weeks of setbacks, breakdowns, unexpected expenses, exhausted kids, anxious pets, and the stress of relocating our entire lives, we encountered the first person on our journey who seemed unwilling to extend even a small amount of grace. Eventually, her husband stepped in. To his credit, he immediately de-escalated the situation. He listened, calmly explained where the vehicle could be parked, and treated us like people rather than problems. Within minutes, the issue was resolved. Looking back, I fully acknowledge we made mistakes. We drove where we shouldn't have, parked where we shouldn't have, and inconvenienced another guest. For that, we sincerely apologize. But hospitality is often measured not by how people are treated when everything goes perfectly, but by how they are treated when things don't. Every other KOA we visited demonstrated patience, kindness, and a willingness to help a struggling family navigate unfamiliar circumstances. Mitchell KOA was the one exception. We are deeply grateful for the many wonderful KOA owners, volunteers, and staff members who helped us throughout our journey. Unfortunately, our experience at Mitchell KOA left us feeling embarrassed, unwelcome, and disappointed. We sincerely hope future travelers--especially families navigating difficult circumstances--are met with the same patience, understanding, and grace that we were fortunate enough to receive everywhere else. read more

This is a very clean and beautiful place to camp whether you spend just one night or a couple. There's a nice playground and putt putt golf. Unfortunately the only thing missing is a pool. You'll find pictures of a beautiful pool but unfortunately according to the office they did have it once and found some major cracks in it so they decided to just cover it up because of the expense. Stayed here unexpectedly on our way to Hot Springs KOA and ended up having to stay the whole week due to engine trouble in our motorhome. The staff was super accommodating with our reservation, flexibility, and even getting us information for a mobile mechanic. Bathrooms and showers were clean and warm. The kids had a great time on the playground and playing golf. The store had all the last minute things we needed. We would definitely recommend this campground. read more

Very nice owners on site active in making this resort the best it can be. Many large trees but very well groomed and trimmed so that we had no problem at all traversing park with 45 ft prevost bus with 27 ft stacker trailer. The 80 ft drive thru was perfect. Found owners so personable and accommodating. Highly recommend to anyone going east or west on hwy 90 to and from sturgis. Great find. read more

Park is a bit tight, (large mature trees create possible clearance issues and tight turning areas) and amenities are sparse. General store is essentials only (toiletries etc). No activities, power tripped several times, and no onsite maintenance available. Had to run generator until an external electrician could be called and no eta was provided. (Electrician never showed so could only run 1 AC unit for the 45 ft bus) If you have a small 30 amp rig, less then 30 foot, and your looking for a quick overnight stop this would be sufficient. Office staff did do their best to get someone in to resolve the issue, and did offer later in the evening to move me to an electric water site, however we were fine with the generator / monitoring electrical usage. read more

What a fantastic small-town KOA! This was my first experience with a KOA and I was beyond satisfied with this site. The owner was extremely kind and kept the store opened for our late arrival. We had a nice grassy spot for our tent, we met incredible people, the bathrooms and showers were clean, the wifi was pretty quick, it was in the middle of a field and we got to see the most incredible sunset... Camped 2 nights full service when we got there we were told we had to move more middle in the campsite because the queen next door didn't want our rv close to her because she wanted to put out her awning..so my husband complied with the request ..the o;d bag did not open her awning once we couldn't open ours because there was a tree in the way plus we could level out because we were in a downhill slide just to please the queen ...the owner came over and rambled on how he wanted to please everyone the next day they moved her to a different spot we had a planned move because someone was renting the spot we were in they told us they would be over by 11 to move us they didn't want us to do it by ourselves well 11;30 came around and it was raining buckets all morning so jon took the opportunity to close up everything and we tried calling the camp office with no luck so we decided to move before it started raining again well the owner was not too happy but we told him we didn't have all day we had plans..I drove the truck over he had me get so close to our rv I hit it lightly I got out he went to tell Jon to move the rv some more so I had to get in my truck to move it close to the rv again which he did after I got out I asked where he placed the queen well he jumped down my throat and told me if I didn't like it we could leave he was doing us a favor by giving us a site demanded to talk to Jon Jon tried to tell him the issue but he did not want to hear it,,he was ranting and raving and almost crying in fact he started crying and complaining that he tried to please everyone...I never said anything else but laughed because it was so stupid ....I think he needs to get into another type of business one that he doesn't have to deal with people...the bugs are also extremely bad here due to the horses next to the campground and there is nothing to do here so just keep driving past ...if you do stop don't upset the owner he will jump up and down crying and tell you a sob story.worst place ever read more

Made our reservations online after leaving a message. They called us back and said they'd be waiting on us. We arrived around 3:30, got checked in. Owner was friendly and gave me the low down on the grounds. Very laid back. Even got escorted to the spot, even though it was cold and blustery. Unhooked from to truck and that's when the problem began,,,,,,no water! Walked up to the office to see what was up and they informed me that they had turned the water off the day before. Cold snap coming in. Would have been nice to know that before we made reservations or unhooked. That's why I can only give 2 stars. Seems like a nice place other than that. read more

Our family has stayed here a few times and will continue to return. It is clean and well run. The people that own/ run it are very nice and make you feel welcomed. The sites are fairly level and spacious. Every site has a grassy area with a fire pit. The children enjoy the pool and other activities. Bonus points for the fact that they recycle! read more

Mitchell KOA is a very nice Journey KOA in Mitchell, South Dakota. Away from the noise if the main interstate in a very nice wooded campground. I was warmly greeted be Jim, the owner who told me all the information regarding the campground. We were escorted to our site and settled in for our overnight stay. We had a great view of the open fields and some cattle. It was right in the heart of "corn country" as we passed beautiful fields of corn near by. During the night we had a downpour with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Kipper doesn't do well in bad weather like that, so it was a hard night for him. Up bright and early the next morning and on to Mount Rushmore KOA Resort and Village. We really enjoyed our stay and on our way out stopped in the Ladies bathroom. Oh my gosh, it was beautiful and so well maintained. Bright and cheery, and clean. Cute signs everywhere. Thanks Jim and Jerry, the owners for taking such pride in your KOA!! Between the putt-putt and pool, there's really no need to go to town for entertainment for the day. Stayed here for several day to visit with sister from Kansas, we came in from.CA. Was such a nice location, and campground. The owner was nice and helpful for this campground and when.we made reservations, talked to him about other trip we were making, and he suggeseted restaurants there in.AZ! We stayed here 2 nights, the younger workers were pleasant but the manager was not. The afternoon we were there we had 2 friends from town come visit. The manager approached us very rudely and asked if we could have our friends car moved. He was so rude about it our friends felt uncomfortable and left. The second night we were there we had a fire and played a little music. When I went into our camper I could not hear the music outside. The morning we were leaving the manager approached us again and rudely asked what we did the night before. He told us we were too loud and were not welcome back to his campground. That was fine with us, we had already decided earlier that we would not be back based on the way he treated us. Also they had a sign that said bathrooms were closed for cleaning from 11-1 PM. I had to wait over an hour past that time because they were still not done cleaning, they left the doors propped open and we could not use them until after 2PM. If the sign says 1PM then they should be open at 1PM or shortly after. The manager would not leave us alone, I would not ever stay here, there are plenty of nice campgrounds around Mitchell. read more

Stopped here for a day to catch up on our chores. Yes, when you full-time RV you still need to do chores. I've stayed at many KOAs and this one, by far, is much better than others. I know it seems a little pricey, but it costs a lot of money to run an RV Resort/Campground, etc. We used the laundry room and it was clean. The pool looked good, but we didn't get it in. They have a nice set up for all types of travelers including cabins. There are mature trees, green grass, and the spots are level with gravel. The owners and workers are very nice. A great spot to stop on our trip. We tent camped and the grass was long and comfortable. We also had a fire pit and a picnic table. We were close to a farm and it was fun listening to the cows talk to each other. The owner was very nice and helped us even though their office was closed. Caught them on their first day open, so there was still a lot of 'set up' going on (laundry wasn't working yet, store not open, etc.), but the proprietor was helpful, nice trees, the campground was clean, they had propane, sites were level, wifi worked, and it was quiet. Only downside is that an RV down the row didn't clean up after their dog (and they had been there for a while). Worth a stop if it is on your way. read more

WiFi that actually works. This is our sixth campground in two weeks. It is the first campground that advertised WiFi that actually delivered. Others had open WiFi with no security, hard to connect due to poor signal strength or poor internet speed. This place has a secure system, outstanding connection strength and really fast internet. The roads and parking spots are gravel but it is thick and well compacted. The jacks did not sink in despite unusually large amounts of rain. The staff was helpful, including getting rid of a dead bird, which would have freaked my wife. The trees are very mature and provided a lot of shade to almost every camp site. They also have a number of activities to keep the kids busy including "big wheel" trikes and mini golf. Most parks have some sort of down side and this one does too. If you have dogs you must watch for ticks. The trees and grass are so thick you might think you are in a national forest!! read more

Stopped for the night on our way through South Dakota. This was a WONDERFUL experience! The gentlemen who run the place stay on the premises, and kept the office open for a late check-in for us. The owners were very friendly, helpful and kind. The grounds and bathrooms were very clean. The c-store had basic groceries as well as souvenirs. Free coffee in the morning. It was very quiet, but we stayed after Labor Day so it might be crazier when the kids aren't in school. We stayed in a cabin, which perfectly suited our needs. Each cabin has a porch with a swing, picnic table and fire ring. Excellent wifi throughout the grounds. Near town, but not a whole lot of hustle and bustle nearby. Be aware that there are cows (and their odor) nearby, but this wasn't noticeable inside. We would definitely stay again! read more

We stopped with our motor home on our way through on a long road trip. The first thing we noticed when pulling in is how tidy the grounds were. Grass was nice and mowed, and everything had a well kept appearance. Restrooms and showers were good and pretty clean. They offered recycling, which made us happy. The only thing (very small) was we couldn't find a dumpster and was told to just leave our trash in our site when we leave. As we pulled away we noticed trash bags at each site barely hanging on in the moderate wind. But a nice, tidy, safe place to stop. read more

We spent the night at the KOA in Mitchell on our return trip from MN to CA. We broke the key to our RV storage compartment before we arrived. The 2 guys who run this KOA were so helpful. They called around town adn found a place that had a replacement key for us. They gave us perfect directions to the place that had the key and also perfect directions to the Corn Palace. They went above and beyond to help us. The actual camprground was clean and wonderful. Best bathrooms we had on our entire trip. We'd stay there again for sure. Great place and great guys! read more

Great location away from I-90 so there's no traffic noise but only a couple of miles off highway. Nice grassy grounds level sites, trees, pool, laundry, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We only stayed here 1 night as a stop on our trip. read more
