a rainy day in a town

Dairy Delite, formerly known as Twin Kiss, is little more than a seasonal window service only roadside frozen custard and light snacks place. Located at the intersection of Rout 6 and 59, it's popular mostly with tourists on their way to the Kinzua Dam and with groups such as the Hot Stove League, the local adolescent and children's baseball organization. The food and service are merely or I might say marginally OK, but what makes it nice is that it is located along by the water along an old mill race, long ago the site of Roger's Saw Mill, where logs were floated down the Allegheny River, then into the mill race to the saw mill where they cut into boards and other wood products. There are ducks, fish and other wildlife around the lawn of Dairy Delight for patrons to watch, feed and enjoy. Hence, the surroundings toward the rear of the business are rather pleasant.

For years, Dairy Queen was at the top of my list of fast food burger places. That's because of…read moreseveral Dairy Queens in Vancouver and North Vancouver that serve really stellar burgers. Since then, Dairy Queen as a whole has been displaced from the top of my list, first by Harvey's then by Burgermeester. (And now, the new and improved A&W has snuck past DQ into third place.) But still, if I'm looking for a burger and there's a DQ in the area, I'll go there more often than not. But, sadly, not this one. It's not actually bad, you understand. But it just kind of feels like they're phoning it in. I'd still take this DQ over, say, McDonald's. But it's just not as good as other DQs. (And, unfortunately, with Sheetz, Burger King, and Arby's all fairly close, it's just got too much competition for my taste buds.) I don't wish them ill, but they need to pull up their socks to get back in the game.

I ordered a chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard cake from our local Dairy Queen in North Warren…read more I specified numerous times I wanted the cookie dough also on the top of the cake as advertised. They asked if I wanted any writing on the top. I said if it wouldn't take away from from the decorations. They reassured me it would not. Picked up cake, no cookie dough decoration on top of cake, looked like a 3 year old wrote on the cake. Also, looked like it was thawed, and refrozen. Disappointed for the price you pay for the cakes. Will be getting our cakes at another local Dairy Queen in Youngsville which is further for us to drive.

The garlicky mashed potatoes tasted yummy homemade. I had the fish and chips and really enjoyed the creamy cole slaw; oh my, when I saw the salmon delivered, I wished I'd ordered that. Then the cheeseburger, huge salad, and cheese sandwiches were delivered to my other friends and I had to laugh, because everything looked really good. Not only was the food delicious. The staff were very helpful. When we asked, after the check had come, if they could split the check for the 5 of us, they graciously did a check for each of the couples and for the 5th guest in our party. We hadn't seen each other in a couple years and never felt pressure to vacate our table. A senior hostess visited our table and spent some time talking and reminiscing with us, as many of us had grown up nearby. We felt welcomed and seen. Ambiance: lotsa parking on site and there's a traffic light at the entrance of the group of stores and restaurants. This restaurant is off a heavily trafficked road, so you know the importance of a traffic light to small and local businesses. I wish the chain carried Thousand Island dressing, as I would have had a salad instead of my fries. I would have ordered regular lemonade instead of just drinking ice water. (They have fancy lemonade with cool flavors that my friends really enjoyed). Neither of those are deal breakers, though.
