    Arroz con pollo

Such a great concept to help the community of Dorchester. They offer fresh produce and products to better serve the community for reasons prices. Clean supermarket and friendly staff. They have parking across the street. I visited this location with a program that they are apart with Haley House where I was able to learn how to make Arroz con Pollo. Would recommend checking out and taking a class!

Fantastic idea from the former Trader Joe's president. I had the pleasure of hearing from Doug when he visited my school. Every time I come, I am still impressed by all of the healthy foods being saved from landfills and feeding the community at affordable prices. People have the ability to choose which foods they want. I don't live in the neighborhood, but I drop by when I'm around and have even made the trip just to shop. Personally, I don't agree that it is bad for the store to allow non-Dorchester residents to shop. There is such an incredible amount of food wasted in the US that there is enough for anyone who wants to shop there, and limiting the population would create a stigma around the store. Selection is good for produce and staples, but not specifics. It's always a surprise which new items the store has in stock. The prepared foods are very convenient, especially love the vegan smoothies! Friendly staff and unbelievably low prices. It is possible to find a few organic items here! Some produce like avocados you'll have to eat fairly quickly, but most of the produce seems to be pretty fresh.

my haul for $18.74 total. See review for breakdown of items

This place is amazing. Good value for most things, as it's a food rescue and gets various foods and produce donated from a lot of companies/organizations. My housemates really utilize the prepared foods, which are $1.50~3 for soups, curries and rice, etc. I tend to go for the produce and frozen goods, and sometimes the dry goods if they're what I need (For example, I wanted macaroni again for pasta salad, but they only had spaghetti that week). Bread is usually quality stuff like Rudi's or Nashoba Brook and for about a fourth or a third of their usual retail prices. Sometimes some real gems like garlic scapes for 99 cents/lb, or fancy yogurts like Oh My Yog 4 for a dollar. Staff are really helpful and will go take a look in the back to see if there's a new shipment if you're looking for something that's not out. Here's a sample of one of my trips last week: $18.74 total: A case of 12 cups of Oh My Yog blueberry yogurt $3 (that's 25 cents each!) Shredded mozzarella cheese $1.49 Organic Feta $1.99 Elbow Macaroni $0.50 Cedar's Organic Original Hummus $0.50 1 lb cherry tomatoes $0.99 3.64 lb bananas $1.06 0.88 lb baby carrots $0.43 2 lb bag of frozen cut okra $1.99 bundle of mint and bundle of thyme for $0.79 each chia bars for $0.59 each red scallions for $0.35 rhubarb for $0.57 1.34 lb of garlic scapes for $1.34

The idea of this establishment has been kicked around for a few years now & I was quite excited to see it become reality. My weekly volunteering gig leads me to serve families & individuals at a local food pantry. So to see a place to open that offers fresh food for low process makes me hopeful that more people will have access. Many people think that they sell expired or rotten food but that is not the case. The food here is donated by many sources & the prepared meals are made fresh with fresh ingredients. The space is very bright, open & clean with small shopping carts & baskets available. I headed over to the prepared food section & was surprised to see everything from baked fish to brisket. Small side dishes cover then spectrum from black bean salad to buttered brussel sprouts. It was nice to see fresh produce & uncooked pasta available for incredible prices. A wall is filled with canned goods from tuna to beans. Beyond the value priced food there is a window into a large kitchen were the prepared food is made & people are taught how to cook in a healthy manner. This alone is an incredible idea to educate people on how to eat better & pass that on to their families. I hope this place does well & start the conversation about how food is distributed, consumed & valued in our culture. We need more people to be daring enought to think differently about what this essential topic.

Awesome place and concept. At times selection can be limited as you would expect with how they obtain food mostly sponsored! Staff are nice and helpful. Love the mission and the awesome deals I have found. Great non-profit to support!

We like this Whole foods market- it has everything from produce to breads to prepared foods…read more I especially like the prepared foods - the soups are good for lunches. I would like to see more variety in the hot foods bar - especially because we always come here on Saturday and it's the same dishes. I understand they probably have a rotating menu so each day probably has a different selection but since we only come on Saturday it's pretty much the same every Saturday. Please change out the menu. Yesterday they even had some cut up oranges for free samples and that was great!! You get to try the fruit before buying- I mean you generally can't go wrong with cuties but still I thought this was a nice touch!! Loved it! Now that they have so many more self service checkout stations it's great! The space is also more efficient now. Their service is good too - they have someone there to quickly help if necessary. I like the green bananas as I like to buy them that way so they ripen over the next few days and can be eaten while yellow before they become sad lol! Overall we like this store - would like to see more selection/ rotation of menu in the hot bar!

We took pride in the fact that we used peanut oil to cook our chips in what was known as the Hawaiian style, is this was in opposition to the oil our nearest competitor used - cotton seed oil, which is actually industrial byproduct of manufacturing cotton for clothing. We thought Whole Foods would really love our chips and I was really disappointed when we were told that you wouldn't sell our product in your stores because our peanut oil was not cold pressed. Roll forward to the present . i'm shopping for groceries in what was then the newest store, the Whole Foods on Central Street in Jamaica Plain. I was looking at the bulk chocolate that was wrapped in clear plastic wrap, and I happen to glance at the ingredients. There, clearly marked for the whole world to see, what is the fact that the chocolate bar can change genetically modified to organisms. Yikes! I put the bar back and immediately remembered what had happened "back in the day" when Whole Foods had a very strict standard about what they would and would not sell. I was shocked and disappointed. I didn't bother to say anything to anybody because frankly, nobody gives a shit. But I have it upon yelp and even though this is about the Westland Avenue market, I thought I would tell the story. It is definitely a narrative that tells the story of our country. There was a time when people really cared. They had standards, and even though Whole Foods standards prevented me making what would be a very big sale for a product I believed in, I understood. And respected the stories decision not to accept our product, even though I personally felt that it was a little over the top. And now? You're selling a product that has what some will consider could be one of the very worst aspects of the ever expanding catalog of what Michael Palin calls, "food like substances". I would like to see that product remove from all the stores everywhere. It is sorry reminder of how far we have fallen.

The flower section especially stood out: beautifully arranged, fresh, and thoughtfully put together. I'm not usually a frozen food eater, but friends have been encouraging me to give Trader Joe's frozen options a shot -- and I'm glad I finally did. I took the risk, and I don't regret it at all. Their frozen meals have a great flavor balance, and I rarely have to add much (if any) extra seasoning. That's a huge win for convenience and taste. The staff here are friendly, approachable, and even funny -- whether you catch them on the phone or in person, they bring good energy to the store. The one downside is the checkout area. Because of the layout, it's not always clear where to line up, and there isn't much space for items to be packed. One time, a few things I paid for were placed off to the side and didn't make it into my bags. So now I double-check before leaving to make sure I've got everything. As for parking: they don't validate, and it's street parking only. That said, both times I visited, I was able to grab a spot right out front -- but definitely go in prepared for the possibility that parking might be tricky. All in all, I'd absolutely come back -- great selection, strong frozen food game, and an overall pleasant shopping experience.
