At different times, old injuries pop up to haunt me. I have had back pain, neck pain, rib stabbing me, shoulders out of joint, hips out of joint, knee issues and foot pain. Not all at once! This time, it was mainly numbness and tingling in my fingers and wrist, plus knee and foot issues. Research told me that the practitioner I needed had to know a procedure called ART. (Advanced Release Technique.) I didn't even know a chiropractor would do this. But through searching for someone who does ART, I found Dr. Brian. He's REALLY good at this technique, plus gives excellent adjustments. Some chiropractors have struggled to adjust me, saying I have tight muscles but loose ligaments (or vice versa) but Dr. Brian has no problem adjusting me. And he has now done some ART on every part of my body. I am enjoying much less pain and, just as important, much more function. I can do the physical activities that are fun for me again. So basically, because I mentioned my friend, I would have to see Dr. Berg. I laughed and clarified that I had done all my own research and that my friend had just mentioned that she knew Dr. Hejny. I had no idea who her doctor was and ONLY mentioned her name in case she got something out of my mentioning her. I WAS A NEW PATIENT. I DID MY OWN RESEARCH AND CHOSE DR. HEJNY. I KNEW NOTHING OF DR. BERG AT ALL! I HAVE A RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHO I (A UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL) WOULD LIKE TO SEE. The assistant told me she would have to have a meeting with the office manager to determine if I was "allowed" to see Dr. Hejny. Now (one week later) I was told that he would not accept me as a new patient because I had mentioned my friend's name. I would have to see Dr. Berg instead. (Who I knew nothing of, because they have separate websites!) That is ridiculous. I will not be bullied into seeing a Dr. that I did not choose... It would hinder the relationship from the start. So now I can't experience the benefits of Dr. Hejny' s work because two doctors want to claim property rights on patients. I am not property, and I will never go to a clinic that revokes my right to choose my care provider. Grow up and learn to play in the sandbox together. So thank you for nothing, Dr. Hejny and Dr. Berg. Dr. Hejny, I had really been looking forward to meeting you so that I could experience atlas care, and it's kind of unbelievable to have been rejected. Dr. Berg, I will not make an appointment with you because this makes me feel like cattle that has been branded before I've even stepped onto the farm. I worked on him for over a year with this issue as did another massage therapist who specializes in postural restoration but we could not make his hip feel better for more than a day or two. Finally, the day came when he announced to me that his hip pain was miraculously gone. He went on to explain with much joy and near befuddlement that he'd gone to see a chiropractor who specialized in "atlas adjustment" and that he was laid on his side on a table and a small metal rod the size of a pencil came down and tapped him painlessly behind his ear. When he got up, the hip pain that had been plaguing him for so long was gone. I have to admit, I was a little incredulous. But he gave me Dr. Hejny's information and I did a little research. As a bodyworker, I have a pretty good understanding of anatomy but I truly had no idea that our Atlas bone, aka C1, that sits just below our skulls, cannot be adjusted by hand with any kind of accuracy and that although I've been seeing chiropractors regularly since I was a teenager mine had never been addressed, or even mentioned. It was very interesting and compelling information, but, as with so many things in life, I quickly forgot about it and carried on. About a year later I was working on a nurse practitioner who asked me if I'd ever heard of Orthogonal Chiropractics. I said I had but I'd since forgotten about it. She gushed and highly recommended that I consider seeing Dr. Hejny saying "It's a total game-changer." Not a week later I had another nurse bring it up again, this time saying "He's amazing! It will change your life." Now, when you hear such things, you really must pay attention so I took my cue from the universe and this time did some serious research, learning all I could. It became quickly evident that this was a brilliant, stupidly obvious but completely overlooked, simple approach to body alignment. I then started noticing how many of my clients, who were complaining of knee, hip, low back, foot, etc. issues, often had necks that did not quite line up with their spine. I began asking as they laid face-up on my table and I sat at their heads looking down their bodies if they thought their head felt straight and lined up with their spine. Most would say yes. I would then take their heads and shift it to line up squarely and inevitably the client would find that uncomfortable and report as feeling crooked. Hm! I also started noticing how most people's leg lengths were different so I began recommending many of my clients go see Dr. Hejny, even though I'd never even so much as spoken to him. As more and more of my clients saw him I began hearing, feeling and seeing amazing things with them. Again, I was hearing "It's a total game-changer" or "he has given me my life back" and they were so grateful for my recommendation to see him. My clients kept encouraging me to go but I didn't feel the need until I began having some serious issues that no stretching or massage could fix. Finally, I had to go. Without making this review far too long for anyone to read (wait, did that happen about 3 paragraphs back?! My apologies...but, in for a penny, in for a pound as they say!) my experience was exceptional in every aspect, and in many ways, I would never, ever have anticipated. Before I went to see Dr. Klapach, I had been seeing doctors at FairView University for the better part of last year. I wish I had gone to see Dr. Klapach right away. I doubt she would have made me wait 8 months and jump through numerous hoops before telling me that surgery was inevitable. I can't ever get those eight months back, but thanks to Dr. Klapach, I am slowly getting back my range of motion, and I believe my pain is already less than it was before surgery, most of the time. I just had the surgery in December (which went great, by the way! They do it in an orthopedic facility, not a hospital, so my Covid fears were lessened), so it has only been a short time, and recovery for rotator cuff surgery is notoriously slow. Fact: "Expert" doesn't begin to describe Dr. Aimee Klapach, MD. She does 270 knee surgeries a year, a fact I kept repeating to myself when I was having anxiety spin-outs in the weeks before my ACL reconstruction surgery. That depth of experience matters when you're literally trusting someone with your limbs. Fact: She's a super conservative surgeon, bless her heart. She never tells me what I want to hear. She tells me what I need to hear. I don't want a risk-taking, skydiving bro giving me health advice. I want someone who's gonna tell me that "If it were my sister, I wouldn't do it" when I ask if I can fly to a wedding a few weeks after surgery because there's a small chance I could get DVT and die. She obviously didn't love disappointing me. But she takes her job seriously enough to be a firm advocate for my healing and my body, and at the end of the day that's what I need. Fact: Her work is excellent. I'm 9 weeks out from surgery and my knee is healing beautifully. I followed her directions and the result is that nothing has gone wrong: no infections, no mistakes, no risks, no mishaps. Just steady improvements day after day, which is all I can really ask for. Fact: She has an incredible team working with her. They called me the evening after my surgery to check in- which at the time felt like an incredible kindness- and when I have questions they always call me back within a few hours. Her scheduler was wonderful, and made sure we had everything we needed to prepare for surgery. I've always found it easy to book appointments, and Dr. Klapach goes to a variety of locations, making it easy to find a time and place that works with my schedule. The follow through is horrible. I was scanned for new orthotics and was told that they would be ready in about 7-10 days. I still haven't received my orthotics and not one time did anybody reach out to me to let me know what was going on with my order. Every week I would call for an update and Melody the receptionist would take my name and number and that was it. Finally, I called again last Friday and someone else answered my call, she apologized for the inconvenience, pleasantly placed me on hold, contacted the company and found out why there was a delay in my order.
