I worked with them extensively on the cost of the extraction, though, and paid my portion in advance (over $400), since it wouldn't all be covered by my insurance. I tried to call them for a new issue today and was told I had a prior balance (under $200) which I'd need to pay before being seen. They had verbally guaranteed me the amount I paid them was the entire amount I would owe, but apparently there was fine print somewhere that says it could be more. Now they won't honor their verbal guarantee and wipe out the balance, saying I have to pay it in order to be seen today. They may be good people, but they have bad policies with no compassion or leeway provided for those in financial distress.

They made an appointment for the fitting, which was supposed to be on September 23rd. We were contacted today, September 18th, letting us know that our insurance would not authorize the treatment without trying a CPAP first. I spent several hours speaking to different departments at our insurance company to find out the procedure and after much research and speaking with a high level supervisor, it was confirmed to me that we did NOT need any prior authorization, nor does my son need to try a CPAP before getting a mouth guard. When I called the office to discuss this with them, I was met with a rude women who would not allow me to speak. Who in fact told me that I could pay them $2500 upfront and then fight with my insurance company to be paid back. She was a receptionist...not even billing! Do not go to this dentist office is you would like to ask questions or advocate for yourself. They do not want to hear anything at all and think they know what they are talking about...not to mention WAY overpriced. I called my own dentist and asked about a mouth guard and was told is was only $1500 and we could submit the claim. Awful!!!

My son came out of his appointment for the final portion and said I don't think the guy knew what he was doing at all. Prior to the last procedure both my wife and myself spoke with the office to ensure that we would not need any adjustment to his retainer after the procedure, while we waited for the next steps. Both people we spoke with assured us he would be fine. We were NOT fine. His retainer DID NOT fit and we were basically told "too bad". My son is a teenager and they essentially told us he was fine to be missing two front teeth for over a month. He spent his entire school vacation in his room until we were able to contact his orthodontist to fix his retainer. If they had told us the truth from the onset we would have had the retainer fixed that same day. After all that, we decided NOT to use the office they recommended for his teeth, and we were shocked (well not really) that the East Bay put in healing caps that were too small AND one of the implants was crooked! Thankfully the office we used took care of both issues. But when they called East Bay they were also shocked at how rude the lady on the phone was. Stay AWAY from this place!!! Not recommended at all.

Every interaction since has been smooth sailing (I actually look FORWARD to my visits!). *Kind front desk attendant/scheduler - always remembers my name and does her darnedest to find the right appointment for my finicky schedule. *Friendly and comfort-conscious dental hygienists (I usually see Leah - she's thorough and takes the time to explain exactly what's going on in and around those gums!). *And, of course, the calming doctor, himself. At my last visit I mentioned some discomfort that I was having with a crown applied years ago by another dentist. It hurt to bite/chew and I was worried something might be wrong under the dome, so he took a peek to check where my bite was coming together. It had been a while since I had been to the dentist, and this freebie made me want to try NDK over anywhere else. I definitely will be a permanent patient at NDK now given the great experience I had there. Don't be fooled by the exterior surroundings- You walk in and the beautiful decor, gourmet coffee and bottled water in the waiting room, and nice relaxing music all make you feel like you're going to the spa for some self-care. The staff at NDK also contribute to that feeling- they're super-friendly, knowledgeable, personable, and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable! The treatment room was pleasant to be in as well- relaxing music and pretty pictures to look at, including on an HD flat-screen. Later, I was able to see the super-high-tech digital x-rays of my own teeth up on the flat screen which was really cool. And Dr. Kim and Vanessa were great about explaining what I was seeing on the images and why they were recommending the treatments they did. The exam and cleaning was really gentle, quick, and expertly-done. And they made sure to check in along the way to make sure I was comfortable. Today I experienced the worst visit I have ever had. I got there early, 8am appointment was there at 10 of to be safe, first appointment of the day and didn't get started until quarter after because the hygienist Marissa was not ready. I felt extremely uncomfortable with both her conversation topics (complaining about their equipment and talking about their high turnover rates with hygienists) as well as the 20+ minutes of almost being drowned with a water pick while I was told to move my head and neck into extremely uncomfortable positions to make it more convenient for her and make HER more comfortable. I was so uncomfortable, was sprayed multiple times and had her entire hand resting over my eye at one point with skin contact. After 40 minutes of the appointment time she still hadn't started brushing/polishing my teeth and instead was lecturing me on flossing. Again while not actually cleaning my teeth, just sitting there. I said I had no plan to, and just wanted my cleaning done. Again this is 40 minutes in, and I do have a job of my own to get to. She struck my cheek, I am guessing in her mind it was playful, but as someone who was already EXTREMELY uncomfortable at that point it was completely unnecessary and unwarranted. I got up, said I was all set and left. I asked the woman at the front desk if there was a comment card I could complete and she said I could just tell her the problem. Like I said I have a job to get to, so I called on my way there and explained the whole situation as I am doing here. She apologized but said all she could do was make sure the next time I was with a different hygienist. Keep in mind Marissa is already the 4th one I have seen in two years so the odds of that were pretty high anyway. But since there is no other solution, or comment card for the real manager/ owner. Here is it. They would not provide MARISSA's last name, but when I find a NEW dental office, I will be sure to make sure she is not on staff there.
