It came with quite a few sides- 9 salads/vegetables plus a dish I called cheesy corn spoon as it is set over the hot fire to melt the cheese. Our family loves Korean food so when we got to Sydney, we began searching for the best Korean food in town. This place was super crowded on a Thursday night so we knew it was popular. I ordered the ox tail soup, my brother ordered the dolsot bibimbap, and my mom ordered the galbitang. The side dishes were pretty good. Not the best I've had, but better than average. Ox tail soup - First time I've ever had this soup and it was delicious. They usually don't season it beforehand and give you salt to do it yourself which I liked. The broth was so light and tasty. The meat was delicious and the portions were nice as well. Dolsot bibimbop - Typical bibimbop. Raw egg on the top which is must. Ingredients were fresh and the meat had a lot of flavor. Galbitang - Again, the soup was very light and tasty. Somewhat similar to my oxtail soup. My mom is very picky about her soups and she finished the whole bowl to herself. Must've been good. I love an interactive dining experience. While some may argue that you don't go to a restaurant to have to do the cooking yourself, I think this endearing tradition sets Korean BBQ apart from your average dining experience. And I'm all for originality. I walked in off the street with a friend, without any prior knowledge about Dae Jang Kum. I let my friend order. We got mixed dumplings, a seafood pancake and another seafood stew. The meal came with small bowls of sides which was a fun little sampling experience. I had never tried kimchee before, so I gave that a go and really liked it. The seafood pancake was my definite favorite ($15), It was enormous (larger than large plate size) and chock full of various underwater life. The pancake came with dipping sauces as well which added a little kick and rounded out the flavours. At Dae Jang Kum Korean BBQ, the food is great, the service is nearly impeccable and the overall experience is fun and unique. Next time I go, I intend to cook my own food at the table. I just want to make sure when I do, I'm not wearing my finest clothes and don't have somewhere to go afterwards for fear of stinking up the place like meat and smoke. read more

We were a little unsure what to do (I've never been to KBBQ with someone who isn't Korean) but staff were super helpful and were able to give us great recommendations. All I have to say is order the fried chicken! Seriously the menu is huge, your eyes is going to wonder a lot of amazing dishes, you'll probably think that maybe I should order something other than the fried chicken - this however, will be one of the greatest tragedies. Saying that this is a Korean BBQ restaurant so there is a lot of other things to order, like hot pots and BBQ meats. You can tell a Korean restaurant is good when you walk in and it wreaks of Korean BBQ. This place does not have that nostalgic wreak. It boats having a good ventilation system but after a long meal here, the expected lingering food smell doesn't exist here because the food is not as flavorful. The side kimchis are surprisingly simple & bland, failing to create new notes & leave an impression. Even the traditional spicy cabbage kimchi is not spicy, & this is coming from a girl who can barely handle tabasco sauce. The meat & price are good. Another instance of you get what you pay for. This restaurant only offers one dipping sauce, whereas many other Korean restaurants give you 3 to mix & match. Service is quick & workers are actually Korean, so it gives off an authentic feel. This place gets the job done and if you're trying to get more bang for your buck, good for groups. Still would be willing to throw in a few more dollars elsewhere for a really good meal. read more

Came here on a Friday night because 678 down the road had a long queue for a table. To our surprise, this place had tables readily available. I can only think to compare it to 678 though which remains my cbd fave for K bbq. The positives here? Better service and tonnes more options in terms of bbq dishes across meat and seafood. The negatives? No spicy shallot salad as a side (critical!), the meat was not as fresh, and the soup (we had the oxtail one) had zero flavour / salt. Ended up here one night after a bar crawl and we were quietly impressed. The prices are not extorionary and food was really good. We ordered about four dishes and along with that we got 5 mini dishes of pickels, creamy pasta and potatoe - this was to enhance and accompany the mains that we ordered and to share a bit of Korean tradition and it worked like a charm. I've had Korean BBQ in the Silicon Valley/Bay Area of California many times and nothing has beaten those experiences or flavors as of yet. Dae Jang Kum came close to 5 stars and I reeked of this place for days! I tried to wash my hair and air out my jacket but the smell stayed until I got home to a washer and dryer after my holiday in Sydney. Woah. We came here on a weekend around 7 pm and we were seated right away. The staff does not speak good English and so much of our ordering was pointing at photos. I'm totally OK with that when there's pictures (most the menu has images). It's pointing at random words that I don't like and get scared of... Anyways, we ordered lots of food and the meat was well marinated. The meat had so much flavor and the staff was very helpful with cooking and cutting up our meat. They also changed out the propane during our stay making cooking a breeze! The sides were nothing amazing but they were what you'd expect of simple sides - kimchee, cold veggies. Honestly, there's not much more to say. It was a good experience, good food, and good service. Nothing amazing that I'd go back over and over again but it was memorable enough that I'd recommend it if someone asked where to eat Korean in Sydney CBD just to fulfill the craving. read more

Avoid at all cost. Biggest waste of time. My husband and I arrived at 1:35am and the place was empty. We ordered ... tick tock tick tock the clock goes on and on. We finally asked about our food around 2:10am and the waiter looks at our empty table and goes "oh gosh!" And spoke to his colleague in Korean nodding towards us and said "sorry, it's coming now." Another table nearby also asked about their food, as did a third, and a fourth. By this time the place was more crowded. We waited another 20 minutes before our food finally arrived. The food was not even that good. We ordered the seafood pancake and there were barely any seafood, mainly pancake batter. We asked for the bill and takeaway boxes, not once but twice. The waiter forgot to bring it to us and we had to flag a different guy down. We watched the second guy tell our waiter and again saw him express his surprise that he once again forgot about us. Without a doubt the worst Korean restaurant in Sydney CBD. Last time I was here I was with friends and had BBQ. The meat didnt look fresh and the bulgogi had like gooey yellow fat spots on them. It did not feel safe to eat them. Second time I was there I wanted to try out mains so we ordered Kimchi soup and Soy bean soup and it seriously made me doubt if the kitchen staff were Koreans at all as they r very basic Korean dishes that any household should be able to make but soy bean paste was so gross here. The presentation was so strange that I had to ask a staff if it was actually the soup that I ordered. Rice here has a that old rice taste (I dont know if people understand what I mean). Also the smoke detector was running out of battery and went BEEP every 2 minutes which made it very stressful to enjoy the gross soup that I was served. read more

I know, our first dinner in Sydney and we go to Korean BBQ? While fighting jet lag I just felt like I needed something light and bone broth soup (sur lung tang) seemed to fit the bill. We passed by and saw the picture on the window and that settled it. The soup itself was ok but gets points for having plenty of meat. The panchan was just ok too but the cabbage kimchee was noticeably good. The restaurant itself is a step up from the typical mom and pop Korean restaurant I'm used to, with Korean script wallpaper decorations and a young Korean waitstaff, rather than your usual dumpy hole in the wall and ajima waitresses. It feels unfair to give this place three stars since its focus is on barbeque, and my wife and I both had soup, but I guess that's how the chips fall sometimes. read more

Ever noticed that there are zero Korean restaurants in Newtown these days? It's a drag. So I wandered into Haymarket to try and find a place that did a non-meat bibimbap. I took a punt on Dae Jung Kum even though they only had a limited menu displayed in the window. But it was fine; they had a stone pot version with kimchi (probably had fish of some description in it, but after almost twelve years as a vegetarian my standards have lapsed) and cheese. My one quibble is that the "vege" side of things consisted of a few leaves of lettuce, but the addition of cheese to a stone pot is sheer genius and I got some broccoli and other vegetarian-friendly stuff in the side dishes so can't complain too much really. Oh, but there was no hot sauce served along with it, so I have two quibbles. What's a bibimbap without hot sauce?! Or an egg, for that matter? It's cash only, and the ATM on the premises wasn't working, so be prepared for that if you're gonna visit. Staff were nice and unobtrusive, and it was busy enough for a late Sunday afternoon in winter. Would I visit again? Probably not, if only because I know of other places where I prefer the bibimbap (and when you can only eat maybe two things on the menu that is kind of important). read more

We were there @ 6:30 & it was almost filled with people. By the time we left, people were waiting to be seated. Many tasty side dishes. We BBQ'd our pork belly & mixed beef along with the fresh garlic & round onion. When wrapped with the fresh lettuce, the combo was delicious. Smoke from the BBQ was well filtered. One minor criticism--room temperature water was served in a carafe. Would have been nice if it were iced!
