Finding the right black salon in the Bay Area is difficult at times and this is definitely the place I will continue to go to as long as I live in San Jose. Clyther and her assistant Ms. Tae do an excellent job! After moving to the Bay Area from Seattle, I tried many salons before I found these two that I trust with my hair. I used to get my hair relaxed for years with them until I decided a few years ago to try going natural. Recently I decided to go back to a straighter look and they recommended a new Matrix Straightening System which has been AMAZING. My hair has never been so healthy from a relaxer. The first thing I noticed was after I washed it for the first time it remained pin straight, healthy looking and shiny. I never have to put any heat on it so I haven't experienced any breakage. It's been almost 5 months since I got this done and the treated hair is still completely straight and requires no heat. With the relaxers I used to use, any moisture would make the hair frizzy or crimpy. Not only do the effects feel healthier, but the whole process of getting it done seemed much better for my hair and scalp. There was no chemical/ burning feeling that usually leaves my scalp tender and scabbed. Downsides of this I've found: 1. The process takes a very long time, about 4 hours depending on hair type/ length. Prepare to spend a long day in the salon! 2. When your grow out starts coming in you will eventually need to start using heat on the roots. There's little you can do besides this to blend the roots and the treated hair, since the treated part is so straight. I'm very happy going back to straight hair with this new formula and highly recommend it! Also the ladies in the salon are incredibly thorough, caring, and offer great advice on hair care. read more

Fantastic! I went to Da 1 Above for wedding hair and makeup for myself and my two bridesmaids. Planning my wedding from across the country (I live in New York), I was extremely nervous about finding someone sight unseen. Once we walked into Clyther's shop, I knew I had nothing to worry about. Clyther and the rest of the staff have set a new standard for professionalism and great customer service. Everyone at the shop cooperated to help get everything done perfectly and on time. Even though not a moment was wasted (if my hair wasn't being worked on, my makeup or nails were getting done) they did everything they could to make sure I wasn't stressed. Please note that I am writing this review as a very fair-skinned, soft/fine-haired white girl. If you have coarser hair, please skip this and see the other reviews below, because I can attest to their expertise in working with two multiethnic/biracial friends of mine whose hair (and makeup) came out absolutely BEAUTIFULLY - I just cannot say the same for mine. I came here to get my hair & makeup done as a bridesmaid in Danika A's wedding. What she says about Clyther and the other women at the shop setting a new standard for professionalism and great customer service is 100% true; it's why I can't bear to give Da 1 Above a less than 3-star review! Everything from the way these ladies worked together to the overwhelmingly positive, serene attitudes they espoused, to the fruit & cookie platters they made us while we sat waiting for our turns in the hair or makeup chairs just made the entire experience a truly charming one. That is, unfortunately, until I saw my hair & makeup. I seriously feel guilty writing this after how wonderful everyone was to me, but I have to be honest and say I was really disappointed. I'd brought in a photo reference of Rachel McAdams in Wedding Crashers to show the kind of soft, loose curls I wanted, but they used so much product to curl such small sections of my hair that I looked like a brunette Irish dancer when they took out the clips. But as someone who almost never wears it, the makeup was especially jarring to me. In at least two sets of pictures I've seen so far, it looks like I gave only my face a bad spray tan while the rest of my skin is ultra pale by comparison. It was just way too much makeup - I looked 10-15 years older! By the time the sun set and we were all at the reception (it was an outdoor affair), my boyfriend assured me that the makeup wasn't as severe and he'd helped me to smooth out my hair a bit, so it turned out all right -- and really (more importantly), the bride looked and felt beautiful, which is all that matters. But I hope this review, if nothing else, provides some insight for the staff at Da 1 Above, because they are more than competent at their specialty and I'm sure with more practice on fairer skinned, finer hair types they would do an amazing job. read more

I still love this place but the "expertise" might be a bit subjective. I went back to get a touch up since my usual person was unavailable and I was hoping to find a place closer to home anyway. The relaxer used on my hair was some "natural" brand that just was not good for me. It still stung, my hair was glossy, but definitely not well relaxed; my roots popped back up a week later after a wash and i had to work around "hair that needs a relaxer but its not yet time" for the next 6 weeks. Ms. Clytheia (sp) is professional, competent and oh so sweet. I recently moved here from the East Coast two months ago and I have been on a search for a good salon that weren't trying to pay me a really high amount. I was pleasantly surprised about the level of service, the atmosphere, and how my hair turned out! The staff is professional and our conversation was great. Although I called ahead and they said that I can be a walk-in, I appreciated that she worked me in with her other appointments but I also noticed that she honors appointments so she made sure that they were taken care of on time. She trimmed her clients' hair and it looked like a trim not like she was scissor happy! To top it off I'm going natural (7 months in) and my hair is thick but she got it straight. I went to see Miss Clyther to get my hair done in about early 2008. I must say that she was kind, overly generous, and a very spiritual woman. She was remodeling the shop at the time (I'm not sure what renovations were made) and she did a wonderful job on my hair. My hair is a little hard to tame, so it only lasted for about a week until it began to revert. I would recommend her for her talent, but even more for her generosity. The only reason I never returned is that I decided to give my hair a break and I've been seeing my stylist friend in LA in between. I hope that she is doing well. This place is truly a place where you can go and not feel like the ppl in the salon are gossiping about you. Not to mention, Clyther ALWAYS gives my hair just what it needs to get back to a shiny, healthy state and gives me the most fabulous wash/blow/styles out there! When I came to Mrs. Felix years ago my hair was the worst mess you have ever seen. Bleaching combined with dyeing AND a relaxer... my hair was so dry it would snap off .... and you could forget about it having the chance to grow! However after ONE visit and consultation my hair has NEVER been in bad shape again! Now it grows constantly, fully and HEALTHILY! I never believed I could have perfectly straight and extremely silky and long hair without the use of a relaxer (or a weave!) but I have just that thanks to Clyther. Besides the perfect hair cut and style every time, Da One Above is soooo much more than just a salon. It is truly a place of peace. I literally fall into a relaxing nap every time I visit, sitting under the dryer and listening to a Fred Hammond CD throughout the visit. However, Clyther took the time to evaluate my hair and immediately let me know that it could grow, but that I had to protect my ends better.
