I drive from Bethesda to shop at this nursery at least twice a year. Their selection of interior plants is unmatched and always includes not only seasonal choices but also unusual and interesting options. In addition they carry an extraordinary inventory of outdoor pots that are very well priced. While I can find beautiful outdoor pots closer to me, Snell's pricing has spoiled me forever. This place is amazing! The selection of house plants and various plant pots was impressive. I was very excited to buy a venus fly trap! Even items like gloves were plentiful in terms of choice. I do wish that everyone at the store were as friendly and helpful as the woman who checked me out, but earlier my friend and I had to hunt down an employee to ask a question, and one person working at the register seemed relatively disinterested in his job. The prices here are higher than at big box stores, of course, but they do also have good sales. I bought a gorgeous and enormous mandevilla to put on my balcony - full price it was $30, but was discounted 40%. read more

Went to buy a garden fountain and they told me they were too busy to order one, come back in August! Ok So we went back to purchase an $800.00 fountain on display. We wanted to ask about whether the pump was functional. Two woman and a guy said we are very busy! You came on a Saturday!!!!!ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? They were more attentive to customers buying a box of pansies. Aren't I a customer as well??? I'll bet those flowers don't total $800. Needless to say customer service is not only nonexistent, they were rude and condescending . We will never ever shop there again. Shout out to Miquel who was very helpful and polite. read more

Stopped off for the first time on my way to DC. Very friendly and helpful guy pointed out some mums and put them in the car. When i went inside to pay and look around, however, I had a bad experience. Two large labs came bounding out from behind the store, barking and circling around. I am a dog lover and owner, so I didn't really care, but I thought it was a bit odd to have that level of dog activity in a place of business. I was looking at some tulip bulbs and not really paying attention to the barking and a girl's explanation (to the store, I guess) that they barked whenever someone said "who's that?" But when I stepped back from the tulip section, a dog was right behind me and I tripped and fell on my right side right in the middle of the store! It made a thump. I was embarrassed and stood up, but then quickly realized no one seemed to have noticed or cared! Another customer sort of nodded to see if I was ok, but none of the three people behind the counter looked up. I felt a little roughed up, but nothing was broken, so I went to pay. I jokingly (ruefully) asked if I could get a discount since I had taken a fall in the store. The young clerk said with no concern "I wasn't part of that." Not understanding what the heck she meant, I said, I tripped over one of the dogs and fell in the store, right in the middle of the room. I cautioned that while I love and own dogs and "wasn't going to sue them" they should probably keep the dogs in better control unless something more serious happened. She said, "I don't know why you would want to sue us." I was trying to explain what I meant, and she motioned to another young person behind the counter and said "you should talk to her, they are her dogs." I repeated that as a place of business, they should probably be worried about having large dogs running around. In response, I got a blank, uninterested stare. I'm 61. If I had been 10 years older, I could have easily broken a bone. In fact, today, four days later, I have pain in my wrist and elbow because of the fall. Am I going to sue them? No. But man, show some respect and concern for customers, and, if the young people working for you don't "get it" then make sure they do. I noticed you have another review that mentions the dogs. It's not the dogs, it's the attitude. I won't return to the store. read more

I know nothing about landscaping and plants. I just like pretty flowers! ;-) Husband and I needed new bushes for the front of our house. He sends me to decide...?? No idea what I am doing. Thank goodness for Tristan! Friendly and has a great sense of humor. I should him pictures of our front yard and what my wish list was. Easy to care for, pretty, full sun, and doesn't get too big. Tristan showed me all his favorites which ended up being mine. We took 5 bushes home and then some! Will return again for Tristan's help! D R Snell is by far my favorite nursery around. Their green house and store front combine to make a very relaxing and enjoyable place to look at plants for the house and garden. Their staff and dogs are a wonderful crew and make the whole experience even better. The outside had a large pond filled with beautiful fish. The outdoor plants offer a great selection of options to choose from for your yard. The plants that I have gotten from here have been healthy and come back every year with spectacular color. Snell's has an excellent selection of healthy plants and their customer service is top-notch. Last year, one of the clerks spent an hour going through their records to find the record of some plants we had purchased. We'd lost the receipt. I really enjoyed this nursery. We went on a cold winter day but a few weeks ago. Unlike some other nurseries, they still have a good amount to choose from. They have an indoor store which is a good size and houses many small plants. They have different plant pots and plant decor to choose from, including little fairy scenes. We found the exact plants that I wanted and had a difficult time finding elsewhere. The plants were reasonably priced. I would have to say the plant pots can be a tad overpriced. However, they are a smaller nursery and I can appreciate that. Definitely worth hacking out! read more

I have been shopping here for years and within this past year I have decided to NEVER RETURN! Last summer I was treated with NO respect, even with a cart of $300 worth of plants! Then the first time coming back this year, there was not even a "hello", or a "can I help you"! The people working here have no customer service skills and could care less if you need anything. In addition, when I went to purchase the items I bought, my account was not found, thereby I lost any points I had retained over the last few months! Do not expect ANY loyalty or manners from this place. I will never return, it is not worth my time or money... there are plenty of other nurseries in the area. read more

AVOID D.R. Snell Nursery in Mount Airy We bought hanging baskets of flowers for Mother's Day a few weeks ago. One basket is still going strong, but the other flowers rotted and are now nothing but weeds. My mother tried to return them, and when asked if Snell's would replace them, they first said they were bought outside the 30 day window (which they weren't). They then tried to say they didn't sell the flowers (which they did). When we called later to complain, the manager on duty stated that the flowers were not bought there, and sometimes "old people forget where they bought things." Other than the obviously insulting comment, my mother didn't buy the flowers - I did. I checked the basket to make sure they were the ones I gave to my mother, and indeed it was the same basket. This place usually has good flowers, but what an obnoxiously insulting thing to say when questioned about a poor product! This place will no longer be getting our business, and I advise others to avoid them as well. (Edit: 6/11/2017) Ms. Snell, clearly we have different interpretations of what happened. What is inexcusable is a business not to stand behind its product and try to claim they didn't sell it in the first place. It is also inexcusable to claim "old people sometimes forget" which is a conversation that happened later on the phone, and clearly you weren't a part of. Please check your facts next time you decide to accuse someone of being "liars." read more

Stopped by to get some Coral Bark Maples [Acer palmetto "Sango Kaku"] and even as it was a cool windy March day, they had what I wanted. The people at this Snell's on Rt. 27 were very rude to us and referred to us as "old people" who were confused. They said a dying plant,that was purchased there, was not one of their plants. Needless to say, we will not be going there and encourage all of you "old people" not to go there either. read more

I've been a customer of both DR Snell Nursery and Snell's Greenhouses since moving to Mt. Airy in 1993. They epitomize the best of small family-owned businesses and are always generous with their time and advice. Find unusual shrubs, flowers and trees that big box stores don't carry. I had Snell do some landscaping for me. The stonework was fine, but there was a big problem with planting and then Mr. Snell not wanting to make the mistakes good. His landscapers ripped out all my perrenials. They said they needed to make room for new plantings but when the plantings were made they hadn't disturbed the place where the perennials had been. I think they thought they were weeds. They also removed several of my daffodil bulbs that were supposedly in the way. They had knocked all the dirt off them and separated them and it looked to me like they planned on taking them away. You don't do that if you're tossing them. I told them I wanted to keep them and they at least didn't give me any trouble. Mr. Snell came and talked to me about the perennials because I told him I wanted to knock some money off the bill. He dug through the mulch a bit and said they would come back. They didn't. So I contacted him again and said I wanted him to replace the flowers that had been destroyed and that I couldn't find them locally any more. I said specifically that I wanted the Brazilian verbena that shot up about 4 feet on single stems and not the smaller one with several stocks. So when they called me to come get them they were the smaller ones with several stocks but all the stocks were cut away but one. I just took them in disgust feeling I'd vote with my pocketbook in future - which I have. That was last spring. This spring when I was digging a bed they'd dug when they were planting it was full of rocks that they'd obviously discarded from the stonework. I had to dig them each out with a trowel. It was a small area and the rocks could have filled a half gallon pot. Plus I just found the verbena on line that Snells destroyed. White Flower Farm has them for $7.50 a piece. They had torn out no less then 2 dozen. DON'T USE SNELLS. read more
