D Hou's fresh, home-cooked Mandarin-Cantonese cuisine, personalized service from the owner, and cozy atmosphere made an immediate impression on me. The restaurant offers a warm, casual dining experience and has clearly become a favorite spot for both family meals and takeout. The owner, Lynn, is actually Korean and is frequently praised for being welcoming, remembering regular customers, and treating guests like family. That was certainly my experience as well. D Hou has earned its reputation for freshly prepared food made with high-quality vegetables and proteins. Standout dishes include the Kung Pao Trio, tangerine beef, and egg flower soup. I had heard many people rave about the Mongolian beef -- one of my favorite Chinese dishes -- so I had to try it. The Mongolian beef was excellent. The meat was tender, with velvety slices and lightly crispy edges, coated in a sweet-and-savory soy-ginger glaze that clung to the beef instead of pooling at the bottom of the dish. It was obvious the meat had been cooked over very high heat because it was beautifully caramelized without being overcooked. Only a handful of Chinese restaurants prepare this dish correctly, and D Hou can definitely be added to that list. The Kung Pao chicken was another standout. The aroma of toasted dried chiles, chili oil, and Sichuan peppercorns immediately stood out. I especially appreciated that the dish focused on quality ingredients rather than filler vegetables. It was rich and flavorful without being clumpy, greasy, or overly dry. Most Chinese restaurants in Fresno, in my experience, do not get this right. The fried rice here had a clean, balanced flavor that likely comes from quality oil and restraint with unnecessary ingredients. Rather than overloading it with vegetables, they kept it simple with eggs and scallions, allowing the texture and wok flavor to shine. The rice itself was firm with a slight chew -- not mushy or dry. Cooking it over extremely high heat in a wok also creates the distinct wok hei aroma and flavor. I swear I haven't been this excited about Chinese food in AWHILE.. my family and I were looking for another go-to spot because our usual place we liked to go to (Ding Ho) just wasn't coming up to snuff. I read reviews and our options were between Tsing Tao and D-Hou. We ended up going to D Hou cause it was closer and omg it did not disappoint! Upon entering we saw a nice lady, which I assumed was Lyn from all the raving reviews about her kindness and hospitality and they weren't lying! She was so gracious and sweet! The interior inside looks like a nice quaint restaurant from the 80s-90s decor but it did felt very homey and warm from the cold outside. Onto the food, we ordered two orders of the Tangerine Beef, 1 Orange Chicken and 1 Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Egg Flower Soup and ended up ordering lots of noodles by accident I and another family member ordered the tangerine beef and omg it was the best tangerine beef I have ever had. I've had this dish plenty times before but none of it was ever mind blowing. But this... this was different! The tangy sourness is what first hits you, then the sweetness, then the hint of spiciness. By far the best tangerine beef I've ever had! 11/10! Highly recommend! The orange chicken was amazing with the caramelized orange peel! I normally love Ding Ho's orange chicken but this is better hands down! 9.5/10! Just wish it was as crispy as the beef was. Still solid though! The shrimp was amazing and tasty 8/10! Egg Flower Drop soup was again, so well crafted cause it had so many veggies, chicken and tofu and was better than any simple egg drop soup I've had. The chow mein noodles were so good, it didn't even need to pour soy sauce on it it was seasoned perfectly. If you want a Chinese food place where it's not some basic food, not only does the chef care about the food they put out and carefully cooks and preps each dish perfectly, is made to order, provides warm and inviting environment for each customer who comes in to dine, this place has become my solid new favorite go to place for Chinese food. However the pot stickers are honestly the best I've ever had! Reminded me of my trip to China. I highly recommend to make your own dipping sauce with soy sauce, a little vinegar, and a touch of chili oil. The restaurant is much cleaner than most which is why we came here. I think I found my "go to" Chinese restaurant across the street from my go to Mexican restaurant. Lynn, the hostess, waitress and server was helpful with explaining some of the dishes to us. She remembered my other family members coming in a few months ago, this was my first venture here, but definitely will not be the last. The hot tea was her special blend and was quite good. We order the Family Dinner A...Which is $14.99 per person and you get your choice of 3 different types of soup, an appetizer, and rice or chow mein. Then you get to pick 3 main dishes that you would like to share as a family. We had the Sweet N Sour Pork (Best I've EVER had!!!), Garlic Chicken, and Broccoli Beef. All of which were outstanding! There is plenty of parking, and if the weather cooperates, it's a nice place to walk after dinner. We've been here maybe 3 times in the last 15 years (the last time was very recently) and each time, I say "Never again" -- so why do we keep ending up back here? I guess it seemed convenient at the time. This time, I'm really going to remember that it's not worth going back there. Food is almost flavorless. Most recently, tasted "old" or slightly off. The times we've been here, service has been slow, and often annoying in some way. The sizzling rice soup, spicy bean curd, and egg foo yung are my favorites. The food isn't even the best part, though. That would be Lin, the owner.
