We had heard Dennis Foy was in town and were excited to try the restaurant, so my husband decided to surprise me with a Mother's Day brunch reservation -- a three-course brunch menu for $25 a head, which seemed quite reasonable.
We arrived at 11:30am and only one other party was in the restaurant. We were greeted mildly -- not coldly, but not warmly either. No "Happy Mother's Day" even though we were dressed up and with our son. After trying one of the cute outdoor tables, we decided it was too chilly and they cordially moved us inside.
Our appetizers took a while to arrive (again, only one other party in the restaurant), but they were quite delicious. I had the mac and cheese, which was creamy and rich. My husband's tomato and goat cheese tart was flavorful (and quite a large portion). My 12-year-old son felt the cold pea and ginger soup had too much ginger, and I agreed, though the pea flavor was very fresh and bright.
At that point, things went downhill. We finished our appetizers and...nothing. Just nothing. No visits from the waitstaff, no refilling our water glasses or asking us if we needed more iced tea (the water tasted dirty and thus so did the iced tea, in any case). We watched the other party get served their entrees and then their desserts. We watched a new party enter who obviously knew the chef. He greeted them with hugs and left the kitchen to visit their table. Still no acknowledgement of us. A few minutes later, I saw a woman enter the restaurant and head to the kitchen...with grocery bags. This is never a good sign.
After we'd been there for over and hour and a half, and were unsuccessful in getting the waiter's attention, my husband got up to see what was going on. The chef apologized and said, "I'm sorry, I know you've been waiting. It was the salmon...we were waiting for it to be delivered." (Hence the grocery bags?) So they left a family, with a kid to boot, sitting at a table with nothing for over an hour and didn't bother to tell us that they didn't have the food we'd ordered? I've been at many, many restaurants. Nice ones, downscale ones, and everything in between. I've never had an experience that that, ever. Why didn't they just tell us? Why did they ignore us? We could have chosen something else!
We considered leaving, but figured we were already invested, so we waited another 10-15 minutes. When the food finally arrived (delivered without apology and with no visit to our table from the chef) all three of our meals were delicious. My son loved the salmon, my husband's Cajun chicken was moist and perfectly spiced and my eggs Benedict was very well-executed. But it didn't matter at that point. To have been left so long, with no communication and to watch the owner treating other guests so warmly, was very disappointing. I did eventually get the waiter's attention to stress that, in cases such as these, communication can go a long way. He apologized and said he had been "told by the higher-ups" that the food was coming soon.
When we left (charged the full check, and we left a full 20% tip even though the waiter didn't really deserve it), the chef apologized to my husband again. But we felt it was too little, too late. We always enjoy local restaurants where everyone is made to feel like a regular. When that treatment is reserved for a select few, it's not worth our time. We'll stick to Lilly's for lunch and dinner and the casual but friendly Buddies for breakfast. read more
