Now that I have this quarry business DOWN, I went back to get more stone. My amazing project guy…read moresaid to get a "Supersack" of the Delaware River Stone, 1-3". Called up Tri-State, and the guy on the phone asked if I was sure that's what I want, because the 1-3" is bigger than it used to be, and customers are complaining. I tried to wrap my head around that and decided to pay another visit in-person. I felt super confident this time: I knew where to park, I knew to get tags from the extremely patient man in the booth, and I had the price list ready to go on my phone. The biggest issue is that I want all the stones. I recently saw a Zillow listing for a wild house where the previous owner had made a stone canyon in the back yard, and I thought, that's me. Give me a few years. My eye was drawn to some gorgeous golden-hued stone that turned out to be Golden Creek Veneer. It was a bit out of my price range, and I was proud of myself for refraining, because I really only needed the river stone and a few more medium-sized boulders. I gazed longingly at the quartz, and finally settled on two pallets of different kinds of boulders and, as a treat to myself, a circular container of Bull Run Veneer, which is pretty nigh irresistible. I asked if delivery could happen that weekend, and checkout guy said there was a slim possibility, but probably the next week. The next day was unusually hectic, and I was shocked to get a call from the truck driver that he was on his way. I mean, great, but... there was a road crew practically in front of my house with half the street blocked off, and I had to get to a client within the hour. Delivery arrives. To his credit, the driver tried several possible ways to deliver my stone, but my driveway is what used to be an ordinary size and is now narrow compared to everything else in America, the electric cable hangs dangerously low, and I didn't want to sacrifice my freshly-planted butterfly garden. The driver asked me if I had requested the nifty three-wheeled forklift, and since I am only slowly gaining expertise in this area, I had assumed if they brought it the first time, it would reappear. I waved goodbye to that driver and getting my project done on the weekend. Lo and behold, I get another call later the same day, and it's the super awesome driver who came with the magical forklift last time! Luckily, I was back from my client. The driver placed the four pallets in my driveway absolutely perfectly. You have to admire those skills! He said they'd read my review, and I quickly ran back into the house and locked the door. The project is set to be completed today, and I can't wait to plant more flowers around it. I have no idea what to do with the leftover pallets. If anyone wants them, they're yours. I gained a level in quarry XP, so I can now start a consulting business as a quarry-midwife to other homeowners.

High quality work and team - we would overall recommend Stone Garden based on our experience. Work…read moreincluded two wooden retaining walls and two rock-lined swales connected to an underground drainage pipe to manage rainwater run off on a steep hillside, as well as replacement of our main concrete-reinforced cinder block retaining wall. We initially contracted with Stone Garden for the rain management work in late spring. The work was fast - estimated at 1-2 weeks but done in 3 days! At one point they had 7 people on site. The working crew was very thoughtful - they helped us move daffodil bulbs disturbed by the construction, carefully cleaned up after the work, and even helped my husband move some bags of yard waste unrelated to their work. A torrential storm followed this first project, leading to the failure of our (pre-existing) main retaining wall. We turned to Stone Garden to replace it, upgrading with some additional drainage features and a brick facade. It was difficult to get the follow on work scheduled due to communication delays and a busy calendar of other projects. After two months the follow on work started. While the retaining wall was built fairly quickly it took another month for the masons to come finish the brick facade. I had other outdoor work scheduled and luckily we were able to deconflict it. Overall, the work is high quality, reasonably priced, and is holding up well. Sam and his team are skilled and professional. Just get scheduled early, the Stone Garden team is in high demand!

I hired Stone Garden to perform several tasks based on the recommendation of someone I know. I…read moresincerely regret hiring them and do not recommend them. Each task they were hired to perform had issues. For example, I asked them to trim back bushes. They trimmed them back so much that my neighbor called me, concerned that now we had zero foliage providing privacy between our yards. Despite my instructions, Stone Garden trimmed back essentially to the stump and I was left with twigs in the ground and had to wait for months before they started regrowing. I also asked them to build stairs off of my deck and to replace a gate door. The stairs they constructed were not level and the gate door was not flush so it did not latch properly. I had to contact them to repair these issues but the stairs are still not much better. The last straw was that I hired them to acquire a permit for additional work. The permit drawings they prepared were not at all what we discussed. Rather, they showed extensive changes that I did not request. Upon expressing my concern about the inaccuracies with the drawings, I was told they were trying to show me "what was possible." I didn't ask for that so it wasted weeks of my time as I waited for new drawings. The new drawings were also problematic and proposed removing and relocating a full-grown tree -- again, not something I requested so we had to again discuss revising the drawings. The third version of the drawings were still not what I envisioned but I was told as long as it was close enough, we could submit the permit application. They submitted the permit application in September. As expected, the city had questions and comments. Stone Garden did not reply to these comments. They also did not reply to my emails or phone calls. Months passed. Finally, I heard from the owner in February. I was given a lot of excuses and apologies -- but no actual progress on my permit application or description of next steps or milestones. More time elapsed with no action or updates from Stone Garden. I finally reached out to the city myself and learned that my permit application had been terminated due to lack of activity. Stone Garden never informed me of this status. The city also provided me the comments that has been sent to Stone Garden which made it very apparent that Stone Garden is not equipped to manuever the permitting process. I've since spoken to several other contractors and they noted it was very apparent that Stone Garden does not understand the city permitting requirements based on the application they submitted and the questions they received from the city. I have since contacted the owner and requested a partial refund, along with all correspondence with the city and documentation submitted for my permit application since this is my intellectual property. I received no response at all and no partial refund. If you want quality work and good communication, look elsewhere. I do NOT recommend.

None of the big box home supplies or small hardware stores carried proper base coat, gauging, or finish plasters. They all recommended that I use Spackle or joint compound, which will not adhere to the existing lath, shrink, crack, and fail completely in the near future. Tony at Peoples knew exactly how plaster walls worked, understood that I wanted to repair them correctly, and had everything I needed in stock. I knew which scratch/base coat plaster I wanted, but wasn't sure which finish plaster I would need. Tony knew exactly what would work best and made sure I understood how to mix it. I think some of the negative reviews here are a misunderstanding about what this business is. It is a building supply yard, not a hardware store. They carry a lot of odds and ends that you might find at a hardware store, but I'm guessing a good 80% of their sales are raw building materials going to commercial builders.

Contracted Barlow to replace an old, torn up asphalt residential driveway with concrete. I could…read morenot recommend them higher! Rick Barlow did the estimate & emailed the proposal, it was a bit higher than the bids I got for asphalt, but it IS a concrete driveway - much more durable with a longer service life. Agreed to terms. And even though it's late December, Rick told me there was a 3-4 day window of mild weather and he scheduled our job within a few days of me sending the 1/3 down payment. The install team had five people and they were great. The foreman - Sergio - was incredibly knowledgeable/helpful/friendly. He went over precisely what they were doing. They had the old driveway taken up in about an hour, had the forms up and the underlayment graded and compacted in about two, and had the concrete poured, seamed and smoothed in another three. In at 8AM, out by 4. The new driveway is simply perfect! Absolutely beautiful. In short: if you need a new concrete driveway, you might want to think twice about a company who does a lot of things good and instead go with one that does one thing GREAT. All Barlow does is lay commercial & residential concrete, and they are VERY private-homeowner friendly. Top recommendation.

After interviewing 4 contractors, I chose Barlow to make a 22"x 10' patio, front walkway, and driveway border to the property line. They gave me a very competitive price. Andrew also gave me a construction date that was sooner than later - within 7 business days - and was quite flexible with me, as I had to work through an HOA. The crew was outstanding. Quick, efficient, and left a very remarkable product - including a solution to the driveway edging - which was to build in a curb. They taped everything off and cleaned up the area very well. This company cares. In the early evening, Andrew came by to check the work and my satisfaction with it. That rarely happens nowadays. I am tremendously pleased.
