Big Pappa is the proprietor and is fun to interact with. Ask him about the cultural history behind the guayabera shirts he sells. If you want a fun bit of culture on Calle Ocho strike up a conversation. He mainly sells Havana style fedoras and guayaberas (button-down shirts with a Cuban and Puerto Rican history, and across Latin America, I believe). Some pants and other stuff as well. Prices seem reasonable but I'm not a connoisseur of these things, but a local tour guide recommended me here as a less expensive place than the larger store down the street. read more

Big papa Little Havana is a staple in the community and also has a larger than life personality and knows pretty much everything there is to know about little Havana. He can tell you what are the best non touristy restaurants, what cigar shop to go to, the best most authentic coffee, he knows the peanut man well and can even tell you which street musicians are which just from listening in his store to the atmosphere outside. He invited me to dance in the street in broad daylight with some neighboring shops but I sadly had to decline because of a recent surgery but it was so fun! He told me the history of the uniquely Cuban Guayabera shirts. Each of the 4 pockets have a use the top two are for holding your cigars. The bottom two are to hold guava fruit and the little buttons on the side pre to hold your machete. The lines on the back of the shirt are uniquely designed to resemble the Cuban flag. Tourist trap. Absolutely disgusting shopping experience. Owner sold me a hat that was too big and did everything to reassure me that it was the way it was supposed to fit. I couldn't even look down at my shoes without it falling off. Asked for an exchange and he refused and stated I was was wrong, "just looking for trouble" and there are no returns, even though I pointed out that there is nothing in the store that states there are no returns allowed and even his receipt failed to mention that. He then tried to pawn off something else I did not want and kept reiterating that I was "just there trying to cause trouble" and when I showed him the receipt to prove there was no rules stating returns were not allowed he snatched it from me, proceeded to refuse to give it back, and began lying that I had the receipt the whole time and was just causing trouble, then attempted to kick me out several times without wanting to give back my original receipt and then reprinted an entirely different receipt that said "no returns on altered items" in an effort to get rid of me. I gave him the option to either return my money or deal with the bank and he chose to deal with the bank and got upset because I took a picture of him (as many others have) with the product I was trying to return as evidence for them. The man is high off the fact that he has had some minor fame in a small book and treats anyone who doesn't treat him like some kind of royalty like trash. I would absolutely not recommend this place to anyone, do yourself the favor and go to the other dozen stores that sell the same items. read more
