The Devil's Gear is a bicycle shop that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 2001. It was founded by…read morelocal artist and cyclist Matthew Feiner. After seeing the need for a community bike shop in New Haven, Feiner used the last $600 in his bank account to open his own shop. It originally opened in a cramped old Wooster Square factory space at 433 Chapel Street. For his new shop, Feiner chose the name "The Devil's Gear" as a reference to the 1988 Paris-Nice stage race. The French press said that Irish cyclist Sean Kelly was riding "the devil's gear". In addition to selling bicycles, the shop also hosts bike tours, maintenance clinics and weekly training rides. The shop has made a number of moves over the years: first to 151 Orange Street, then down the street to 137 Orange, and finally to their current location at 845 Chapel Street. In 2018, longtime employees John Brehon and Greg Ledovsky came on board as co-owners of the shop. Feiner later stepped down due to medical reasons, but Brehon and Ledovsky continue to build on the foundation and legacy that he left behind. In 2021, Brehon and Ledovsky decided to start selling skateboards at the shop too. Local skateboarder J. Joseph came on board to handle the skateboard department. I've been doing business with the Devil's Gear for well over 10 years. When I first became interested in cycling, I went there to get all of my cycling accessories and helpful tips. I still ride a 2013 Jamis Satellite Sport road bike in a beautiful Tiger's Eye finish which I bought from the shop. I take it back to the shop every year for my annual tune-up. In addition to all of their great products and services, The Devil's Gear does a lot for the local cycling community. They have provided all of the technical support for Smilow Cancer Hospital's Closer to Free Ride for several years. I'm about to start training for my seventh consecutive CTF Ride. When I called about exchanging the bike from a Large to a Medium, I was told I could bring it in when the owner happened to be there and they would "maybe" help me out after inspecting it. The challenge was that the shop could not provide a clear time when the owner would be available, which would have required multiple 3-hour round trips for me just for the possibility of an exchange. What disappointed me most was not the policy itself, but the lack of effort to work toward a solution on a brand new unused bike. I was not requesting a refund and was actually planning to spend more on a different model. I understand sizing opinions vary, but the overall experience left me feeling dismissed rather than helped after my family spent over $800 here. I'm still open to resolving this situation if the owner is.

It was the little touches that made a difference, like the clean wheels and re-fastening my slipping handlebar tape. Not only that, but in a couple of years in the area, Karl has become a pillar of the greater New Haven bicycling scene, leading rides to area breweries and even helping to prep a team for the Smilow Cancer Hospital's annual 'Closer to Free' fundraising ride. I had bought a new bike online and had trouble putting it together. I also needed to attach a bike rack hitch to the back of the car. Dylan was nice over he phone and had me come in & took the bike, looked at the car, made suggestions for installing the hitch receiver, and made me feel comfortable for being a novice getting back into riding at 68 years old! He also found a used bike rack that worked great and saved me money. He watched me ride and adjusted the seat height to my satisfaction. Great bike shop. Very friendly and also very knowledgeable. Just after I left, about 5 minutes away, a deer bolted from behind and hit my new bicycle and some of my car. I went back to the store and they kept the bicycle overnight to review the damage and did not charge me for their time. The frame was damaged and I was told the bike could not be fixed properly. Jason was extremely patient and helpful and tried, over multiple visits, to find the perfect replacement bicycle for my style of riding and body size. Jason, and the rest of the staff, were always pleasant and even offered online selections and made recommendations of new designs and colors that would hit the market soon.
