Very unfortunate and bad experience with Dunlevy. Over a multi-year period, after installing an entirely new front yard and garden, a number of plants died, and then many of the replacement plants died. Our yard was very swampy (which Dunlevy installed) and the grass continually died out. The most we ever got from them was a shrug, and a suggestion that it was the best they could do, even though we had annual contracts with them, requiring us to pay them large monthly sums for continual upkeep of our yard and garden. When plants (many, many of them) died, we would be told to "wait" and see what happened in the spring. Eventually the dead plants would get replaced, but there was never a time that our yard and garden looked completely alive. In a couple of areas, it was obvious that several bushes were not getting the appropriate amount of water, even though Dunlevy installed the irrigation system and we constantly expressed concern about coverage. Time after time, we would point out dying plants to them. When a replacement plant (and even replacements for the replacements) would die, we would ask why things would continue to die in the same exact area. "Sometimes plants just get sick," we were told. In the last year Dunlevy worked for us, a group of bushes, flox and other perennials in a couple of different locations (front and back yards) died out in a pattern (like a stream). It happened after an application of weed killer or some other type of grass treatment. Dunlevy told us to "wait" and see what happened. These areas continued to brown out and die until we pitched a fit about it. When he couldn't explain things nor develop a solution to keep our plants alive, Dunlevy said, "obviously we can't meet your expectations". It shouldn't be expecting too much of a very highly paid landscape service to help plants grow, instead of watching them die. When Dunlevy left us, we owed them approximately $2,000 for prior work. However, they owed us for a more than $4,300 - $1,200 granite bench that their workers broke, and replacements for all of the dead plants that were guaranteed (which we eventually had replaced by another landscaper at a cost of over $3,100). To this day, Dunlevy refuses to pay us the difference between what they owe us and what they say we owe them. read more

This is a great company. I first met them over two years ago when I renovated my home. My contractor recommended them to install the drainage outside on our property. We then used them to landscape our property and renovate our backyard. Dunlevy does fantastic work. We still use them for maintenance and we are working with them to expand and enhance their original design. Everyone on their team, from the landscapers to the lighting team to the sprinkler maintenance has been responsive and does excellent work. The company is highly dependable and has been good about designing proposals within our budget. I am very glad to have found Dunlevy. read more

Would give them -5 stars if I could for very dishonest and non transparent sales process. A great example of how many contractors who come to Bethesda start with the default condition of trying to rip you off. I asked them to quote a tree removal and was clear that I was bidding competitively with multiple parties. They came for less than 5 minutes and sent me back a quote 3x higher than 2 certified and reputable competitors. No information on certifications, insurance, scope of work etc. that you would expect for a project of this nature (cutting down large tree with decayed root in historical area near downtown). E-mailed me a docusign a few days later which was largely BS selling the history of the company. My guess is that they are just subcontracting this work to someone and charging busy consumers an absurd markup. It is possible in areas that are more core to their business they might do good work. Always ask for cost detail and quote with multiple parties!!!!!! read more

I love this firm and will hire them again when the time comes. My back yard in DC is close to the Potomac River and therefore downhill from just about everything. That means we get an enormous amount of water during every rain or snow event. Drainage is a big problem for all of us in this neighborhood. Blake Dunlevy did an accurate assessment and provided a reasonable proposal for re-sloping the land and installing drains. They installed everything as planned but it still didn't work properly -- there was an unexpected soggy spot for no apparent reason. They promptly came out, did some more digging, and found an old abandoned drain line that no one knew about that was funneling uphill water into nowhere. Go figure. They unscrambled the old drainage line and made some related changes that made a lot of sense. Our back yard is now dry for the first time in years. I'm amazed every time I go out and don't have to wear mud boots. Well done. Thank you, Dunlevy Landscaping! read more

We contracted with D&A Dunlevy Landscapers to design and build a swimming pool with surrounding landscaping. They were very easy to work with throughout the design and construction process. Our property did not allow for many pool placement options but they were very creative in providing design alternatives. Once construction started they did a great job of managing the work, adjusting to change requests & keeping our property in good order. We were extremely impressed by the attention to detail, the craftsmanship, and the overall quality of the finished product. We were also very impressed with the professionalism of everyone that had a hand in making our project come to life including Blake, Dave, Gina, the on-site employees, sub-contractors, and office staff. The project turned out better than we could have ever imagined - its like having a resort in our backyard!!! We've used them in the past for other services including lawn maintenance, landscaping, and tree installation and have always had a positive experience. Do NOT use! I paid top dollar for a very expensive irrigation system, and when I need after-care with the system I was told they could not help and shunted me off to the subcontractor, The subcontractor was too busy to help me or even return my calls, So, Dunlevy sold me an expensive system, was happy to take the profit from that when employing the subcontractor, but when I needed some more work done to the system they "couldn't" help me. When you spend $5K on an irrigation sytem, you expect some response and help with it later, not, sorry you gotta call the subcontractor and that person has no time for you. Bottom line -- fine while they are making the sale ,but don't expect customer service after that. read more

Dunlevy is my neighborhood snow removal and ice "treatment" contractor. Sometimes they really are great but other times, it's a complete hit or miss. With our recent ice event, they came through my neighborhood and I was delighted to see they were actually treating the sidewalks. I wish I'd paid more attention, as in the morning the sidewalks were a complete sheet of ice - not even 1 small area of melting was seen. The streets were also completely iced over - no sand, not one speck of evidence that any treatment was done. When I complained to our community manager, the response Dunlevy gave her was "the treatment used on the walks was not as effective as they had hoped due to the thickness of the ice". To which I say baloney! Somehow the year old drug-store stuff I had on hand managed to melt away my steps and entry perfectly fine. When I opened my front door I had no evidence of ice where I treated. The same thing cannot be said about where Dunlevy supposedly treated our community walkways. My guess is that the guys "treating" the walkways only toss small handfuls on the walkways so it was a complete waste of their time. They claim they treated the street but none of the neighbors or myself saw them treating the streets at the time they claim they had. It was nice of them to come by again (after our complaints) at 10:00 - when the temps had already risen above freezing. read more

I cannot speak highly enough of Blake and his team at Dunlevy. We just completed a total renovation (regrading, drainage pits, removal of unknown concrete walkways and part of a driveway, laying pavers, plantings etc) of our back yard and the process start to finish was pleasant, on schedule, the workers were on time every day and worked hard all day, efficient, professional and with exceptional quality. When you're dealing with jackhammers, multiple trucks, excavators and a slew of people, it's easy to get frustrated. This never happened with the Dunlevy team. In fact, Blake saved the day when the inspector wanted to make a big deal out of something related to the deck. Blake asked the guy to give him 10 minutes, jumped on a digger, dug to where the problem was, explained a solution to which the inspector agreed and signed off on the inspection. This saved us at least two weeks. These guys have a great deal of knowledge and experience and conduct themselves with the utmost in professionalism which sadly, is the exception rather than the rule these days.
